Joe did a good job on the deck. He picked up the materials in the morning and finished it that same day. It looks good. I had also hired Joe to replace our concrete driveway, front porch and walkway and while it is too soon to tell whether the concrete will last, we had mixed results. On the positive side, the concrete poured was generally well finished off and aesthetically pleasing. The flatwork crew was professional and in-and-out in two evenings. On the negative side, the original concrete was considerably thicker than anticipated so it took Joe's crew substantially longer than planned to remove the concrete. A two-day removal stretched across 6 days, cascaded delays on other improvements and increased the job cost substantially. Regarding the pour, the new front porch is not level and leans into the house (about a 1 inch sink over a 9 foot span). Similarly the steps are not square (aligned properly with the house) so that they are about one inch shorter in depth on one end. I had noticed a problem with the form (prior to pouring) and pointed it out to Joe and he realigned the form but not enough. By the time I noticed it after the pour it was too late to do anything about it so now I am stuck with a crooked porch. Joe's crew also didn't keep to the original concrete dimensions, pouring a new walkway 6 inches narrower than the original and a new driveway 4 inches narrower than the original. That being said, Joe tried to make things right commercially by building our deck for no labor cost. We just don't know how to remedy the crooked porch.

There isn't much in the way of CE except for safety, but I do have several salesmen who keep me up to date on the latest tools and materials.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I watched the company I worked for build some incredible buildings in Park City, UT and just decided I wanted to be in on the action.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I do mostly flatwork, concrete. But I have gotten into deck restoration as a hobby lately and am enjoying it. It's nice to bring something back to life instead of just building new.
