Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Reviews for West Jordan music teachers

I am a big fan of Jeremie's teaching method. This guy is amazing. Our lessons are online but that in no way diminishes their quality. I look forward to each lesson and suspect that will be the case indefinitely. He helped me find a new guitar, gave me some great tips about what to look for in an amp. He's given me innumerable pointers, pieces of music theory, sheet music (including tablature) for songs I'm interested in, and great advice about how to take stock in my progress (especially during times when it seems like I'm not moving forward very much). I don't think I could recommend Jeremie enough. If you get the chance to work with him, do yourself a favor and take it.

The worst experience that I have ever had with a music teacher in the past 15 years. After having Emily as an instructor for a few months, I had a personal issue that made it unable for me to continue or afford lessons. I politely let her know that I was not going to continue lessons and that I was not able to pay nor perform in the upcoming showcase. I fulfilled my student contract and paid up to the contracted amount despite me not being able to attend those lessons. I received numerous malicious emails attacking me for my choice letting me know that I was a "quitter" and that I needed to "be an adult". There was absolutely no understanding or empathy for the personal situation that I was in, she only cared that I wasn't going to continue lessons. After numerous and extremely long emails I had to request for her to stop contacting me or the harassing emails would have continued. I am an adult and was able to deal with the immaturity and rudeness that this instructor offered, however it worries me what would happen to younger students that had to deal with the condescending and rude communication. I did participate in a recital in which Emily did record the performances. I was told, as a student, that I would be able to have access to that footage. Some of my family didn't make it to the recital and it was very important to me that it was recorded. I have since contacted the instructor politely asking if I could have my copy and now she is refusing to provide it to me. Letting me know that "it's not her responsibility to make sure my family sees my recital". Even though this is something I was told I could have a copy of, the instructor is now saying she has too much to do and can't fill all of these "little requests" by her students, isn't that a teachers job? Due to my personal situation making it so I couldn't afford lessons, I would have gone back to this instructor. However, after true colors were shown I would never return nor refer anyone to this instructor. By far the most disappointing and worst experience I have had with an instructor.
