Emily Merrell is a fantastic teacher! During my lessons, I learned so much about many different aspects of music: music theory, jazz theory, vocal technique, and composition. I also had the opportunity to be in Emily Merrell's a cappella group, which was a great experience. Emily takes the time to get to know each of her students and their individual needs. She also plans vocal showcases with live bands and other fun performances. Emily is very knowledgable in many different aspects of music, and I learned so much from her (especially about jazz piano & jazz theory) in such a short time. I'm grateful to have been able to work with her.

I met this beautiful soul back in August 2015. It's been a year and a half, and I thank God everyday for the blessing of finding her through Thumbtack. Service provided: My goal was to receive singing lessons from her for only 6 months. But, her willingness of always giving more than just a voice lesson, (tuning forks, essential oils, tea's, etc), and her desire to help me better myself, has been more than what I expected. She over delivers and I received way more than what I paid for. Her technique is different, and not once has it forced my vocal chords. I've learned to breath the correct way, speak the correct way, and continue to learn how to present myself when singing to others. She also gives Labs which shows us more techniques, and we are able to perform twice a year to our family and friends. What went well: Since I began with her, I've gained more confidence in myself. I was able to sing with the German Choir in the fall of 2016. But the best part of hiring her, was helping me fulfill my dream come true, in singing to my husband for our wedding. She provided the recording as a gift and was present during the wedding while I sang to my husband. How many teachers would really go out of their way for you? You decide. She believed in me, and that makes a teacher your friend. Could change anything?: Yes, I wish she I could have found her 20 years ago!!! Other than that, I would NOT change a thing. I end by sharing a quote I love "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear" She taught me that I must become the voice, my voice, to complete what the forest offers when we here the birds singing.

Alisa's voice will melt you in any style. I was so impressed with her YouTube channel of the most gorgeous, heart-felt jazz song renditions, that I asked her to sing a set at my wedding reception. I also asked her to sing a beautiful German art song in a classical style for my wedding ceremony, which she did with utmost aplomb and beauty. She charmed me and my guests, in both styles, and made the evening incredibly beautiful. Alisa is professional, punctual, highly responsive, well-prepared, and friendly. She is so easy to work with. I would hire her again in a heartbeat. You will love her!

Mari is an amazing violinist! I’ve heard her play at many events, and each time I’m extremely pleased. She has also taught me in the past, and is such a patient, caring teacher, who knows exactly what she’s talking about. I am more than happy with her skills, and will be having her play at my wedding.

We loved this quartet! They were on time and were set up and playing by the time that we asked them to be. They were very quick to respond to messages and were very professional and kind. They sent me a set-list in advance to make sure it was exactly how I wanted and were able to play our requested songs for our wedding! I would definitely recommend.

I am a wedding planner and I recently had the pleasure of working with Emily Merrell and her band on a beautiful winter wedding at Snowbird. Wow! What amazing talent they have! And Emily's voice is absolutely incredible and versatile for all genres of music. They were an incredible component of our event. All evening long, I was getting positive comments about the band and how great they were. Besides the musical awesomeness they brought to this fun ski-lodge wedding, Emily was a talented EmCee that helped keep the evening flowing smoothly. I cannot wait to work with Emily and her band mates again on future events.

Robert did AMAZING at our wedding. He was punctual, on time and got everything right regarding the play list of songs we wanted. He's very professional, not up tight or in a rush. He also is upbeat and helps get the party going. Being flexible as he is/was he also had the experience to supplement our play list with songs that fit right in as well, to keep the party moving. I would definitely suggest Mr. Devins to anyone and everyone looking for not only a Wedding DJ, but just a all around awesome DJ in general. Thanks Robert!

I saw CryWolf perform at an annual private event a while back and ended up hiring them for my own party. When our guests saw them setting up with acoustic guitars they thought we were in for some easy listening. Of course I knew better because I had seen them before, and all I can tell you is they rocked the place. Everyone absolutely loved their song selections. They don't play the same over-played, old, and worn out songs that other full rock bands cover. They weren’t too loud and they weren’t too soft, but they do make a lot of noise for 3 guys. The lead singer has an excellent voice and the guitar players are very, very good together, with excellent harmonies. They might not be the cheapest band around, but they're worth every penny. They even played longer than the time we agreed upon. Its easy to see they enjoy what they do. They are professional and are very easy to work with. Its hard to say that their version of Hotel California is better than the original, but…and their covers of the Chili Peppers were our favorites! They cover Collective Soul, Incubus, and America very well. They did everything very well. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them as they have become our favorite band to play at our annual event. You won’t be disappointed!

I have hired Stephen Hughes in three different capacities. I hired him to teach my drum line for marching band season, and then hired him to teach private lessons to a group of students. I have also hired to him to perform with a professional wind orchestra as a percussionist. He is an outstanding educator with a very thorough understanding of how to communicate with students, how to work with colleagues, and how to develop and implement a plan. His pedagogy is sound, and his results are thorough. As a performer, he is very trustworthy on all different elements of the percussion section. His rehearsal demeanor is impeccable, and his preparation skills are thorough. He can be trusted implicitly as a performer and educator.

I recently had the great pleasure of booking Tom's band, "Rumor Has It" for a large PTA fundraiser I organized in West Jordan. I have worked with a number of great local bands over the years while at KSL Radio for various promotional events. During that time I came to appreciate three things in a band that are a must for any event. Professionalism. Musicianship. Charisma. I am happy to say that this terrific group has all three of these qualities. Our event was unusual for a PTA fundraiser as we had a large muscle car show, a monster truck, many superheroes, Star Wars and Disney characters, three food trucks along with a traditional fun run. I had been searching for quite a while to find live band with no luck. With less than five days before the party, I discovered Rumor Has It. I spoke to Tom and took a chance to ask. To my surprise- and shock- the group agreed to come to our rescue. The day of, Tom arrived more than an hour in advance to check out the location. The other band members arrived to set up and they were all so warm and upbeat. They were genuinely honored to be there and treated our event with such respect and enthusiasm. They looked great and sounded even better. When they began to play, you could feel the energy rise. Everyone was majorly impressed. We estimate there were over 700 people in attendance that night- more than any fundraiser the school has ever had. The female lead singer was fabulous as she and the band rocked the night with a terrific set of hits from the 70's, 80's, 90's and today. People danced as they waited in line at the food trucks. The kids especially got into it! Needless to say, our PTA fundraiser was a massive success. Rumor Has It absolutely animated the evening bringing so much life and fun to our party. If you are looking for a professional band of superb musicians with class and charisma- look no further than Rumor Has It! Sincerely, Aaron

Gretchen and Julia made my daughter's wedding with their music! They were the perfect choice to make the reception more intimate and charming. They really were the element that elevated the party to a more lovely and sophisticated level. Gretchen and Julia were prompt and prepared, arriving early and bringing their own equipment. They sang wedding favorites, but also made sure to accommodate the bride and groom's favorite songs, making them their own with acoustic guitar and soft, vintage-y harmonies. Our guests absolutely loved Gretchen and Julia; they're so much more personal, special, fun, and relaxed than so much of the wedding entertainment that I've seen. They have the repertoire that can please classics and top 20 lovers alike. I would 100% recommend them!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
