Introduction: I have been teaching sewing professionally since 2010. I've helped hundreds of people in the DC area - from first graders to retirees - learn to love sewing, acquire a new skill, and express their creativity! I believe creating things with your hands can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Sharing my sewing knowledge with others is one of the most satisfying aspects of my job as a designer and maker! I offer private, virtual sewing lessons via Zoom. I customize all my lessons so that you get exactly the skills and experience you want, and don't waste your time reviewing things you already know. I can work with anyone from brand new beginners to experienced sewers who only need a little help with a certain project. Whether you are only looking to hem your own pants, are an aspiring fashion designer, or anyone in between, I'm looking forward to working with you! p.s. I am NOT available for production work or piecework. If you need help making something and you don't want to sew it yourself, I recommend searching for a seamstress in your local area! However, if you would like to learn how to sew in general or how to make a specific product, I am happy to help!

Sewing Lessons

Valerie is patient, courteous and professional. She delivers excellent instructions and will gently walk you every aspect of sewing, pattern making, threading your sewing machine etc. She is amazing. I look forward to hiring her for additional classes.

Sewing Lessons

I have done 3 sessions with Valerie and my experience is 5 star! In just 3 sessions I already made leggings from a pattern Valerie provided me! I'm literally a beginner with very minor experience and with Valerie's thorough guidance and patience of a saint I already made pants!!! I'm so excited about it lol I recommended her to my friends and family and I already purchased more classes!

Sewing Lessons

So far, we have only communicated over the phone. We have agreed that I will call her when I return from vacation on September 10 to set up a date and time for her to begin helping me on my sewing project. But just speaking with her over the phone, I was very pleased with her mannerism, knowledge and experience. It's too soon to rate anything else since we have not started working on my project yet.

Sewing Lessons

Valerie was amazing. I would definitely recommend her to anyone wanting to sew. She is very patient kind and attentive . She gave very clear directions and I’m shocked I was able to make such a neat sewing bag with her. I had not touched my machine since it was bought but I have been trying my had with more fabrics and running to Michaels for everything.

Sewing Lessons

Ms. Cox is a God-sent. She was very responsive and flexible in reference to scheduling. My friend and I both had a class with Ms. Cox. We had fun while receiving an abundance of extremely useful information. Ms. Cox seemed to know everything we would think to ask about our sewing machines and technique. Her patience and knowledge made our class go so smoothly. I can't wait for our next series of classes. I am thinking or organizing a Sew & Sip group and ask Ms. Cox to teach it. It would be a great experience for all.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I have an hourly rate of $75, although customers can save a bit by buying lesson packages of multiple hours.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The first step is to discover what your sewing goals are, and how much experience you have (zero is a totally acceptable answer). Then we decide on the number of instruction hours needed to achieve your goals. For brand new beginners, I recommend we start with a two hour introductory lesson. That lesson covers all the basics, and includes the opportunity to complete a small project, so you can see your new skills in action! I provide everything necessary for the introductory lesson (including a sewing machine if necessary).

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I've been sewing my whole life, and running a business where I sell the fashion accessories I design and make since 2004. I've been teaching sewing professionally since 2010, in both group and individual private lessons.
