Branden and his colleague were wonderful. He was very courteous and polite when I initially called him. The day of service he contacted me to let me know he was available earlier than scheduled, if I wanted the work to begin sooner. They arrived, saw the space and immediately went to work. The bunk bed set we have has a twin and full bed as well as a staircase and I am ecstatic about how perfectly it was put together. He also fixed my running toilet and hung my laundry room coat racks on the wall securely. I asked them to mount something on the kids door that was not discussed and there was no issue. I loved their customer service and constant communication and wish I had more for them to do when they were at my home. I definitely would hire this company again and see why he has a 5 star rating. This company was my first thumbtack experience and I am glad I went with them. I have new handymen to do my home repairs.

Rob seems to be a jack of all trades who understands how things work and will perform small jobs. He installed adjustable shelving in my pantry and a bedroom closet. There were metal strips with brackets and the laminated shelving had to be custom cut. The pantry was tricky because there was an immoveable bracing board in the back, so each shelf had to have a notch cut into it to fit against the wall. The finished product is exactly what I wanted. The shelves are perfectly level in both the pantry and the closet. He worked very neatly and paid a lot of attention to measuring and cutting. I also hired him to assemble a large desk which I ordered from a catalog. It has five file drawers and a slide-out keyboard holder. He unpacked the boxes and assembled the desk perfectly. He was very careful to ensure that the cherry finish didn’t get scratched during assembly. I have also seen some of his other work. He builds cornhole boards and finishes them with custom colors and logos. He creates original signs for basement bars and game rooms using fine hardwoods, hand carving, and a router. He seems to have a real talent for fine woodworking.

Tim worked on various installations and assemblies, like assembling a stepping stool, wooden futon, and installing towel racks and curtain rods, etc. He is a hard worker and seems to have endless energy. I have been very happy with the above mentioned work, and found that he was willing to go the extra mile to deal with problems encountered along the way, e.g. a weird plastic piece appearing on what was supposed to be a bronze metal towel rack, so he did nifty things to hide the plastic. However, more recently, an assignment he had happily accepted--to build two side tables and a coat rack--had to be aborted. Unfortunately that was after lots and lots of time had passed, I wished he had called it off or not accepted the assignment in the first place unless he could see it through, so that I could have had the items done by someone else long ago, as I was desperate to get several home improvement things out of the way. The side tables--which are pretty--were done for the most part but not fully (I still need to find another woodworker to do the unfinished business) and the coat rack was not done at all. Somehow his heart was simply not in it anymore, but would have been better to just straightforwardly cancel a job rather than dragging things out. This is why I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars. He did feel bad about how things went with these three pieces and therefore didn't charge me for one of the side tables.

Highly recommend! Jenrri and his team did new drywall on my kitchen ceiling and you can not even see where the old ceiling starts in the dining room/living room and merges with the new ceiling in the kitchen. There were a number of really tricky things to deal with including a lot of unlevel areas, different ceiling thicknesses to match up to, and Jenrri even found the perfect custom shade of white paint to match the old ceiling area which saved me from having to repaint everything. His team works quickly and they took care to limit the sanding dust from getting all over my house. I'm very happy with the end result. Thank you!

We've hired many contractors on Thumbtack for various projects. David stands out head and shoulders above everyone else. He is the hardest working contractor I've ever worked with. He completed an interior door installation that had very specific and odd requirements. His problem solving skills, craftsmanship and attention to detail are meticulous. I will be hiring him again without hesitation. He cleaned up after the project and left my house cleaner than it was before he came over. Thank you so much David, it was great meeting you and I look forward to using your services again!

Pat did outstanding work on a custom sliding shower door. We have a very inconvenient folding door. He took that out and replaced with a customized sliding door. He did a remarkable job and we are well pleased with the result. He was also able to steam clean our shower door. Most importantly, Pat charges a reasonable price and is honest about the work that is needed and/or required. He is very nice, friendly and easy to work with. Communication is also outstanding.

Interior painting of several accent walls and 2 full bathrooms. Dwayne is top notch. Very professional. Prompt. Fast. Clean! He and his crew were polite and did an excellent job. The price was more than fair. You might think why would someone hire a landscape and cleaning service to paint. Well, dwayne is a handyman and he sure came in handy! He was flexible with his time and was well prepared. Don't hesitate to use his services.

We had Henry build a custom entertainment center for us. From the very beginning he was very responsive and always came through by doing exactly what he said he would. He came by once to see the space and hear my ideas. Not only was he receptive to my ideas but he also came up with his own suggestions as well which I really appreciated. After our meeting, he followed up with a sketch/quote and then returned again to take additional measurements and make sure we were still on the same page before starting the work. The cabinet he built is absolutely beautiful and the quality is excellent. He even helped save me from making the wrong decision about the stain color. He has gone above and beyond and I would recommend working with him to anyone. Thanks, Henry!!

Jamie and his team did a great job on our 12 foot, three panel balcony door. The issue with the door was that it would not slide open as a result of a bad "quick fix" job that the previous owner tried. They had the patience and skill to fully assess the problem and get the door back working again for us. Jamie and his team saved us over $4000 that we were quoted from several companies to replace the custom door. We will be working with them again in the future.

I came home to a water leak after work and contacted plumbers late Tuesday evening via thumbtack. He promptly responded early Wednesday morning and showed up after work to provide a free quote which I felt was affordable given the type of work. I recontacted him that evening to tell him I would like to proceed using his services and asked when he was available. He quickly replied that he could conduct work the next day in the afternoon. He was efficient, punctual, responsive, did a great job and affordable...all things I feel are essential for running a successful business. I would recommend him to anyone and will definitely use him again if I require additional services.

We set a date in mid-January for completion of the project, but Gerry has visited to measure the spaces and has provided preliminary and final designs based on our desires. For hand-crafted, custom-made book cases with cabinets, we found the price to be very reasonable. We did our homework and his final price was $2000 or more less than others proposed. He even offered to assist in packing over 1000 books, DVDs and CDs at no charge. Gerry is affable, courteous, prompt in returning calls, and conscientious about delivering the service you want. We are looking forward to the finished product.

I look forward to working with John on more custom cabinets throught my home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
