Renaissance did an amazing job on my den. I originally hired them to mount a tv and ended up having him paint 2 rooms as well. They were on time, very responsive and knowledgeable. I had another contractor install a cable outlet and electrical outlet above my fireplace to make the mounting of my tv easy. However that contractor didn't do an efficient job and when Antonio mounted the tv both outlets were showing. It is very important to me that only the tv be visible after mounting. Antonio assured me that he would not only hide the cable box and cords but would fix the other contractors work as well. I was able to relax and everything was taken care of to my specifications. They went above and beyond to ensure that my needs were met and I was satisfied with the job. I would recommend them as well as use them again for other home improvement projects.

Matt's work has been excellent. He has done kitchen flooring as well as a bathroom for us, and will be doing another bathroom, kitchen backsplash, and fireplace surround for our house as well as some work on a rental property. He shows up on time, every day that he says he will be there (a rarity in contracting) and works hard. I couldn't be happier with the finished product. We will never use anyone else for tiling and are recommending to our family and friends.

Justin, met him for the first time, arrived with his kit to do work with my old-fashioned fireplace and was able to get it up and running in no time. He even hooked up the remote I bought online for a fireplace that never had one before and everything worked great! I'll always have Justin do any work my fireplace needs, in addition to regular maintenance.

They were very responsive, and gave me options for fixing the fireplace. They had to order (expensive) parts and that took 2 weeks (not their fault and it’s summer after all) but all in all they completed the work and the fireplace works great once again!

The 5th Genration Group recently did a minor renovation on our condo; the quality of the drywall and finishing work was excellent. The staff was neat and professional. The group also did an outstanding ceramic tile installation on an existing fireplace. We will definitely work with them in the future.

NICE Home Services ensured the restoration/repair of my gas fireplace was done right! Their technicians are very competent, and yes 'nice'! They worked the visits to accommodate my work schedule. And to top it off left me a Holiday gift before they left. I highly recommend them and will use them again if needed!

So impressed with DMV Chimney and Masonry Repair! Garrett Kranias is passionate about his work, and it shows - we get our fireplace inspected every year before using it each winter, and we were happy with DMV's response to our request for a quote. They called 30 minutes prior to arrival, and were punctual, professional, and just so nice to work with! As it turns out, our fireplace was "squeaky clean" and didn't need a sweep. The team thoroughly checked the roof, and Garrett was able to give me a very detailed assessment of our chimney and cap (turns out a restoration a few years back was done very well). I am definitely hiring them again next winter!

I don't write many reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to make sure to to write a detailed one for Yosif and Smart House Remodeling. I think I am uniquely qualified to give a very thorough review, as I hired Yosif and his team to do a basement renovation covering over 1,400 square feet. This was a big job, and below you can see some of the before and after photos from a few of the rooms. I'm a pretty particular client; I'm an engineer and pay attention to the details and quality of work that I get done and was very pleased with the outcome on this. I hired Yosif after getting approximately 8 (!) different bids for this job. So that shows you what he was up against. I think the typical experience with working with Yosif is likely as follows: you have him out for an estimate, he has some good ideas about the work that you may have not considered, he gives you a prompt estimate with very reasonable prices, and then you hire him to start the job. Once work is well underway, you realize you've got something really great going and then start creating new contracts to do all kinds of additional work with him--work that perhaps you've put off because you dreaded having to go through finding a quality contractor for each additional project. In my case, I started off with vinyl plank flooring over 1400 sq. feet (spot-leveling & demo needed), with some switch relocation and other electrical work (outlet additions, ceiling box), recessed lighting installation, and HVAC vent installations. By the end I had added significant drywall patching (including closing holes in attic), replacing a huge wood paneled room with all-new drywall, installed an attic ladder, replaced a rear door (including new framing & storm door install), repaired a front door, had a custom divider wall built to hide an HVAC unit, had soundproofing insulation put in, multiple in-wall access panels, minor plumbing, and I could honestly go on. I got an amazing amount done beyond what I originally though was possible for my budget. Yosif is careful to make sure that you are OK with the finished product on each phase of the work that is being done, and is willing to redo things that are not quite right. Each job is properly finished too, with the small things like priming on drywall (plenty skip this!), clean up, and material disposal. I found him very trustworthy as well and had no issue with him doing work at my home regardless of whether I was there or not, yet he was also respectful of my schedule. I would also consider him skilled at a very broad range of construction areas/topics, which if you've hired a number of contractors before you probably know that is not always the case. Although I do want to note that I found his drywall work especially good. I don't think many people would assume that he has 10+ years of experience, but it shows in what he is capable of an his approach to solving the problems that you encounter (and you will always find something interesting when you start opening up walls!). In short, I would gladly recommend him without any reservations.

Over the course of 2 days, Ted and one assistant helped us with lots of projects around our house, including re-attachment of a tile in our bathroom, installation of a new bathroom fan, re-caulking/grouting in our shower, re-attachment of a mantle to the wall, insertion of foam insulation/caulking to repair our chimney, re-attachment of tiles on our front walkway, dishwasher repair, and more. Ted was very punctual, professional, and easy to talk to and work with. He seems to be very knowledgeable about home repairs and it was really helpful to have him around right when we moved into our new home. We asked for a lot of help and Ted delivered - he got everything done (between him and one other person). Overall, we're glad we hired Ted and plan to use him again in the future!

I just bought a home and needed to inspect the fireplace as it was being sold as-is. They came out to my house within 3 days of initial request for a FREE inspection. I was able to get the sense of security that the first time I use the fireplace it will work as intended. I was billed 0$ and would absolutely recommend these professionals to anyone.

Nir knew what he was doing, was thorough with his work, and was very pleasant. We were long overdue a chimney sweep so there was a lot of buildup that he needed to remove. Before he embarked on the intensive cleaning he explained to us why this was a more involved job than a regular chimney sweep. Accordingly, it cost more than the base price for a regular chimney sweep but it was a perfectly fair price. In addition, Nir repaired the ash box at no charge. We plan to call him for our annual chimney maintenance.

Michael and Rosen have done excellent work for me for more than 15 years. They gutted and finished my master and guest bathrooms; gutted and fully remodeled my basement, including expanding the half bath there to a full bath and installing a gas fireplace; they built new stairway access to my basement; built an attached shed/garage; built a large composite deck; and finally, built our long planned addition that included a new entryway and bumped out the entire back of our house, expanding our dining room space and fully remodeling an expanded kitchen space. Milano Construction has been in business for a long time. They are a small operation, but can do anything from fix a plugged pipe to building additions. They are trustworthy, honest to a fault, and extremely fair with their pricing. They are a customer-oriented operation that can provide turn key service if you don’t want to get involved in the nitty gritty or work with you every step of the way in a truly custom way. I work from home so had the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of my projects and have learned plenty from watching over their shoulders and “helping” out along the way. These two are patient and want you to be satisfied with the outcome of the job. They don’t cut corners and do it right every time. I recommend Michael and Rosen for any handyman or remodeling work you may need. You’ll be hard pressed to find a comparably priced, dependable team that does the kind of quality work that they do. Attached are photos of our finished kitchen/dining room space, so you can get a sense for their work product.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a chimney get cleaned?

A professional chimney sweep can clean your fireplace and chimney to help prevent chimney fires and keep your fireplace running in peak condition. Regular chimney cleanings are critical for removing the highly flammable creosote that can build up inside the walls of your chimney over time and cause chimney fires. When hiring a cleaning company, ask the chimney sweep if their cleaning fee includes removing soot, creosote and blockages from the chimney flue and liner, cleaning the smoke chamber and shelf, and cleaning the firebox and the damper to ensure that you’re getting a comprehensive cleaning. Expect the chimney sweep to cover the flooring around the fireplace and properly seal off your fireplace opening to catch any soot that comes out during the cleaning.

Look for a chimney sweep who has been certified by a nationally recognized organization such as the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), Fireplace Investigation Research and Education (FIRE), or the National Fireplace Institute (NFI). This will help ensure that your chimney work will be completed in a professional manner and your home will be safe from a chimney fire.

Do I need to clean my chimney?

A fireplace makes a home cozy in winter, but it also requires cleaning to keep your family safe. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 28 percent of home heating fires are caused by a failure to clean solid-fueled heating equipment — primarily chimneys. On top of that scary fact, nearly 20 percent of all fire deaths are caused by home heating equipment. At a minimum, the NFPA urges homeowners to have chimneys and fireplaces inspected once a year to ensure there are no obstructions blocking the flow of air or any buildup of dangerous and highly flammable creosote. A certified chimney sweep will know what warning signs to look for and have the proper tools. Besides personal safety, saving money is a great motivation for having a chimney sweep regularly clean your chimney. If your chimney liner is not kept clean and in good working order, replacing it can cost thousands of dollars. A yearly cleaning is the baseline for a safe chimney. If your chimney is your main heating source, ask your chimney sweep whether you should have it cleaned more often. If your chimney is not venting properly and smoke is coming into your house, if you notice that the wood you burn is not burning efficiently (turning completely to ash), or if you have other concerns, call for a chimney cleaning and inspection right away.

How much does it cost to have the chimney swept?

The national average chimney sweep cost is $100 to $130. The National Fire Protection Association recommends having your chimney inspected at least once a year, but daily use and other factors might mean you need more regular service. Here are several reasons your chimney sweep cost may be higher than the national average:

  • Overly dirty chimney: If you haven’t cleaned your chimney in many years, or if you’ve just bought an older home and don’t know how long it has been since the chimney was cleaned, excessive grime could increase the cost of the job.
  • Roof height or chimney height: The chimney sweep may also charge an extra fee if your roof is too high for a ladder to reach or is too steep to safely climb on without a harness.
  • Frequency of use: If your fireplace is your primary heating source, the buildup of soot might be far greater than if you just use your fireplace a few times a winter when company comes over. This may impact cost.
  • Excessive debris: Leaves, twigs, and other debris that’s collected in your chimney is a fire hazard and should be cleaned immediately. An excess of junk may result in higher chimney sweep costs.
  • Live or dead animals: Prepare to pay extra if live or dead animals are in the chimney. Rodents, birds and bats can all set up camp in your chimney. A chimney cap can help prevent them from getting in, but once you hear something scurrying around, or smell the unmistakable scent of dead critter, call a chimney sweep immediately.
  • Geographic location: Chimney sweep costs may be higher in your city due to factors such as a higher cost of living or higher cost do business (insurance, overhead, employee wages, etc.).
  • Chimney repair: Any repairs that are needed internally or externally to your fireplace will increase costs. A thorough cleaning and inspection will reveal whether repairs to masonry, tuck-pointing, the back wall, bricks, the fireplace floor or the crown are needed.
  • Chimney cap installation: A chimney cap prevents debris from collecting in your chimney as well as preventing animals such as birds, mice, or raccoons from taking up residence inside. The cost of the chimney cap plus the labor for installation can increase fees.

How often should you have your chimney swept?

Regularly having your chimney cleaned is highly recommended both to improve the chimney’s efficiency as a heat source and to prevent home fires. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends having your chimney inspected at least once a year. You can hire a chimney sweep to clean the chimney while also inspecting it to ensure there is no damage to the lining, firebox or masonry. If you’ve had a new fireplace or wood-burning stove installed, CSIA urges you to have it checked halfway into the first season of use to make sure it’s operating safely. According to industry standards, a chimney sweep is recommended if more than 1/8 of an inch of soot or creosote has built up in the chimney or flue. Some fireplace experts suggest having your chimney cleaned, regardless of buildup, after every 1-2 cords of wood burned. Consult with your chimney sweep about what is best for optimal efficiency and safety with your fireplace.

How long does it take to clean a chimney?

A typical chimney cleaning takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Wood insert fireplaces may take longer to clean, as can chimneys that contain birds’ nests, excessive debris or wildlife. A chimney sweep will arrive at your location and assess the fireplace to be cleaned, and will set up protective coverings or dropcloths to prevent any ash or soot from escaping into your home during the cleaning. Using high-powered vacuums, they clean out ash and other debris in the firebox. With special, long-reach brushes they brush down the interior walls all the way to the top of the chimney to loosen and remove built-up soot and creosote. Many chimney sweeps also offer inspections in tandem with cleanings to make sure you don’t have any cracks or damage inside the chimney or out. Repair work or additions — such as installing a chimney cap — can increase the cleaning time.
