Ed Bilo and his team did an amazing job on our house! We had all types of weeds, ivy, and just plain old nature growing on our home, and even through the walls. I had to plant trees, install sprinkler system, pave walkway. I did some research to find some landscapers. Finally found EBRR and Ed gave us the best price, got it done in a day and did a great job to make sure it does not grow back. I would highly recommend using EBRR Property Maintenance Services and I am thrilled with the work that Ed and his team did. Thank you so so much!

Walter of Hi Solutions responded to my thumbtack query with a competitive bid. On calling he asked succinct questions and reinforced the estimate and committed to a scheduled arrival to fix a pinhole leak in piping at my hot water heater. He arrived on time, was efficient and very courteous and careful to explain what he did and provided me some useful information about the piping in our home. I had previously gotten other estimates which were as much as twice the amount for this simple repair or from companies that would not commit to an estimate without visiting and charging a fee just to look at it. (as high as $85.00). Ct Walter's service gets 5 stars without any reservation or downside..

Plain and simple, Tony does good work. His attention to detail and craftsmanship is second to none. He installed a difficult herring bone backsplash for us with ease. Individual glass tiles aren’t easy to cut but it was no problem for him. He also completely opened up a closet for us and installed a custom built in bench seats and cubby hole storage system. He also painted one of our rooms with a nice stripe pattern. He is very nice and his prices are great. There isn’t a job he can’t perform.

We had some problems with our irrigation system. Carlos came out the next day to look it over and give us a quote, and even fixed one thing while he was there. When he came to do the work three days later, he was on time, explained what he was doing, and recommended some other adjustments to improve the irrigation. He fixed the two zones that didn't work, adjusted some heads, and installed two new sprayers. Our plants are so happy now! I would call JP Landscaping again for other outdoor work we need.

Had them redo our exterior drainage system. Working with them was extremely easy and I was impressed with the end result. Overall, I have nothing but positive things to say about the business and I do plan to use them in the future when we need to do work on our yard.

I have worked with this company twice now, and I am incredibly happy with the jobs that were done. One job entailed creating a new cinder block retaining wall with decorative bricks on top as well as leveling out of my yard. The final results look fantastic and it was all completed within 1 week. The second job entailed repairing/recontruction of a large stone retaining wall with installation of a drainage system to prevent further cracks and damage. There was a tight deadline to get this complicated project completed, and everything was finished on time! Correspondence was prompt, and the final result looks fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the professionalism and hard work by American Home & Hardscape.

We had 6 zones and about 35 sprinkler heads installed for an in-ground irrigation system. Working with Geary and his team was a very pleasant experience. During the process the lawn was a puzzle of pipe pieces but in the end, everything disappeared below the surface of the ground! The foreman made sure I was satisfied before they left. We walked around the property and reviewed each zone and where the sprinkler heads were buried. All my questions were answered to my satisfaction.

One of the best companies I have ever done business with. They were very professional and respectful of my property. It was a very complicated job due to the fact that the original that put the system in (DJ Sprinklers) did a half ass job. Groves Property Service had to rewire the whole system to get it working again, they were amazing. I am very satisfied with the end product and would recommend this company to anyone who wants the job done right the first time.

Diagnosed and fixed the watering system at our church expeditiously and at reasonable cost. Plan toask him to come back and fine tune our system, make upgrades where needed, and open/close our system on a regular basis

My Wife and I recently went through an extensive renovation of our home which entailed moving our kitchen to a different location, expanding a bedroom, remodeling two bathrooms, adding a bedroom and an office, and adding a den. Everyone on Scott'S team was amazing! They worked within our budget, gave us numerous options, and they were extremely accommodating considering we lived in our house during the renovation. Everyone was very professional and knowledgeable. We had estimates from other companies but Winthorpe Design & Build stood out because they really thought outside the box to make our wish list a reality. We love the ideas Krag came up with. We knew we were in good hands when we signed our contract. We highly recommend Winthorpe to others looking to complete a renovation. You won't be disappointed!

Until Jeff and ELM took on my half acre of landscaping, it was overwhelming for me. For several years now, since they have maintained my property I have the nicest lawn on the block, if I do say so myself. And they have installed plants and trees I've been wanting for years. Jeff even took the time to figure out the sprinkler system schematic (installed by a company no longer in business) and explain what was supposed to happen and when and dropped by several times to see that everything worked properly. I cannot say enough nice things about him and the ELM crew.

I just got a sprinkler system installed by John. The experience dealing with him was very good. Will get a better sense of the quality of the system after some amount of usage, but the install seems to have been done quite well.

Hey I had work done recent from these guy and may I start off by saying GREAT WORK guys. I had them come out for a quote and when I say I never had one give me a quote like these guys. The young gentlemen that came out explain to me everything that the money I was spending to hire him will go, from the labor cost to all of the material cost. At first I was a little nervous about hiring this guy just because he was pretty young to me but he knew everything he was talking about not only did he know but his work shows it. I will recommend this company to others. One again thank you S&O Home Improvement for my new gutter system and the great painting you did to the exterior of my house........

It rains a lot in the DC region. Our back yard dirt patio would normally collect surface rain water and then percolate through the dirt floor in the mechanical cellar, below the English Basement. JJBY eliminated this water intrusion by creating a French drain system along the walls in the cellar, pouring concrete, and installing a beautiful brick patio with a channel drain in the back yard. Since this work was completed, we have not seen any water intrusion and the house remains dry even during heavy rain storms. We are so grateful and highly recommend JJBY for your masonry, concrete and drainage solutions.

Very pleased with Ali HVAC! He was very responsive and professional, and provided an accurate quote of the job. He assisted us in removing the old kitchen exhaust duct, installing a new duct, and properly attaching the duct to the roof cap. He provided all the supplies necessary and the hourly rate was comparable to other companies in the area. At our request, he also looked at our HVAC system to answer some of our concerns. I would recommend Ali HVAC! Thanks for your help!

Great price, customer service and dependable. Took the time to explain how to work the irrigation control box and did not try to sell me things I didn't need like another company did. I won't use anyone else for my irrigation needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
