Ed Bilo was great to work with. He was very responsive via email to get a quote and schedule the appointment. He did a great job of trimming the trees around power lines and other structures while keeping most of the canopy in place. They cleaned the entire space before they left and gave me no work to do after they left. Worth every penny I paid. I would definitely hire EBRR again.

After waiting since November to have a contractor come out to clean my gutter. I gave up and tried to locate another contractor. After several replies on Thumbtack, I decided on Reinaldo Torres of Del Ray Landscaping. First thing, he was in the Alexandria area. Many contractors are too far and feel it is not worth their while to travel for a small job. Second thing, its a landscaping business that does gutter cleaning. Great!! My neighbor has tree with limbs overhanging on my roof that traditional gutter cleaners will not touch. Third thing, his quote was inline with the others as far as the gutter cleaning. I did not mention the tree at the time, but the quote for cleaning my gutter was very reasonable. I contacted Reinaldo on Saturday, New Years Eve. He came out the same day in which I explained I wanted my roof swept and gutter cleaned. At that time, I asked if he would be willing to prune the branches overhanging my roof. He stated that would not be a problem for an additional/reasonable fee. We scheduled an appointment for two days later, Monday. It was raining on Monday. Reinaldo, called that morning and explained it was not a good day due to the weather. I understood and we scheduled for the next Saturday. I then looked at the weather for that weekend, and there was a possibility of snow and cold later that week. I called Reinaldo back and asked if he could come out Wednesday, January 4th, after 3:00 PM when I was off work. No problem. Reinaldo and a friend came out Wednesday around 3:30PM. They apologized for being late for they had mechanical issues on the work truck. Most contractors would have canceled. Not Reinaldo, he put a ladder on his family mini-van and came out. Taking about dedication and only 30 min late!!! Reinaldo and his friend, Nelson, did a great job with the tree pruning, roof sweeping, and cleaning out my gutter. They cleaned up after and everything looked great. I am very happy with the service and definitely will be using Del Ray Landscaping again!!! John McCauley Alexandria, VA

Lost a massive White Ash to the emerald ash borer this year, and wanted it cut down before it fell on its own, so started collecting bids. 4-CO provided two bids: one for cutting down the tree and hauling everything away, and one for hauling away just the branches, leaving the trunk cut into 18-20" segments, which is what I wanted. Their bid was the most affordable, and they had great ratings, so I went with them. Now, I have no basis for comparison, but I was darned impressed with how Marvin and his crew brought down the huge tree without disturbing any of the surrounding trees, land, or fence. These guys are acrobats. Also very courteous and professional. Hope I don't lose anymore trees, but would gladly hire 4-CO again if needed.

My initial experience with Mr. Litman was when I had a tree removed from my house that had fallen during a storm. Most recently, he has been doing repairs on a rental property - including painting and removal of trash left by tenants. I am very please with his work and would recommend him to others.

I recently purchased a home that was neglected for 9 months and about to go to foreclosure. The yard was a mess. Victor and his partner did a fantastic clean up, trimming of bushes, shrubs, trees, replacing mulch and edging. It looks great I am very happy. He even added a drainage pipe to a gutter and buried it so it drains to the street. He fertilized the lawn and cleaned driveway and steps and pulled out dead bushes. He was there all day. He had the most reasonsable and fair price compared to a couple other quotes I received. I plan to hire him again and refer him to neighbors and friends that need any landscaping or lawn care services. Thank you Victor!

I highly recommend Natural Edge. In the process of selling my house, the buyers requested that we trim branches off one of our trees. I was anxious to get the work done in time for closing, but we got that request late on a Friday afternoon and I was struggling to locate people to do the job. Natural Edge sent someone out Friday around 5, about an hour after I contacted them to give an estimate on the job. They came and did the job on Monday. They were fast and professional with the job. I was also very pleased with the way they handled the discovery of a hollow portion of the tree. Rather than take the portion off entirely, or cut the tree down, they recommended plugging the hollow portion to prevent water from getting in and causing rot. This saved us money and allowed us to keep a large older tree in the back yard. I was very satisfied with their work and would not hesitate to recommend Natural Edge for any job: large or small.

These guys were professional and courteous. The owners -- Oliver and Oscar both provided expert advice and maintained a professional--yet friendly demeanor at all times. The work team who did all of the work were equally as professional. You could really tell that they were at the top of their game. I had a really, really, really tall tree. Even though they did not have space to use a crane they were in complete control at all times. I would highly recommend their service to others. Also, I was impressed at how they kept the customer in mind..they will work with you. and provide expert advice to ensure that you make the right decision. I would suggest including O&O in your decisionmaking process. O&O came out to see the job the same day I put out a request for estimates. Their offer was unbelievable. I cancelled all other appointments. From prior experience, I knew that O&O was giving me a fair deal, any other estimate would have been too good to be true. My tree was really, really, really tall..I knew what it would require to cut it down. I'm actually grateful that O&O came by first. I lucked out. These guys and their team are superb in all aspects of the job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
