Leonardo came to the house and dealt with a lot of troubles that come with an old house. He relocated the placement of our sink drain within the wall, repaired 10 square feet of drywall, and installed a vanity with the faucet. He did a great job. He is diligent and cares about what you want.

John did most of our kitchen remodeling work for us. This was the first time we have done a project like this so we were sort of feeling our way. I would hire John again, though his helper, Jamie, was not as good. I think the qulity of work was generally good, but I wasn't there to watch most of it. Some smaller details looked like they could have been handled better, such as flatness/evenness of the floor, placement of electrical boxes, some of the edges where the new floor met the old floor or HVAC vents. John was always happy to change something for us, but of course it would cost more to make the change. When they initially installed the cabinets one section was about 3/4 of an inch misalligned with the existing wall. Apparently they didn't see anything wrong with that and went ahead and installed the cabinets. When I saw the result I thought we needed to fix it, which John did, but he charged us another $225 to do it. There are probably always unforeseen circumstances that arrise during construction, especially in remodeling, and sometimes John would figure out a good solution (one that we liked), but other times it would be not such a good solution and we might have wanted it done differently. So more communication at those times would have been nice. Overall we are pleased with the results. The new kitchen looks pretty good, though we're still only about 95% completed. We are still waiting for a few ordered items to arrive and John will be back to finish things off. John was good at telling us when he would be there and when he wouldn't. The project has gone on a little longer than we had hoped, about 8 weeks, but things kept on schedule pretty well and there were a few unexpected extras like replacing part of the ceiling and removing multiple old floors. It was pretty easy to work with John and he seems trustworthy. I think we are a bit overbudget, but we did add in some extra painting to the job. Knowing what I now know, I think the project would go more smoothly if we had to do it again. I think John also learned some things during this project. For example, I don't hink he had installed hardwood flooring before. I bet he would also be better at that if he had to do it again. John gets things done, but sometimes he should think ahead a few more steps and try to figure out if he's doing things the best way.

Quality work! We had our whole house painted by Pinnacle Custom Painting. It looks brand new. They spent a lot of time preparing the walls and you can not even tell where the previous owners had their wall hangings. The attention to detail is spectacular. Gary is professional, punctual, and keeps in contact through the entire process. You’ve made me so happy with the way the house looks. I am glad I had it professionally painted and decided to go with Pinnacle Custom Painting!

Ken was fantastic!! He did an amazing job. Great attention to detail, all of the walls, ceiling, and trim look fantastic! He also was very careful not to paint things like removable shelves together with the track, which is always appreciated :) Couldn't recommend Ken more!!

Kevin was very responsive when I sent out my initial request replying within a few minutes. He was able to come out later that afternoon and was able to mount my 55'' TV to the wall in under an hour. He was easy to communicate with and clearly knew his stuff when it came to the work. Would recommend to family and friends and complete strangers.

Penn Butler is such a conscientious craftsman that he will never do a ‘quick and dirty’ or cheap job, so don’t ask him to. He has done interior repair and exterior siding and deck work in my community for almost a dozen satisfied customers, and helped me after a tiny leak in my study wall turned into a waterfall. His diagnosis of the problem was right on (skylights slowly dripping down the roof trusses); His sheetrock, plastering and painting were all perfect. He knows materials extremely well, and will suggest innovative solutions and materials to household problems that will last, long-range. He will never be the cheapest construction guy you hire, nor the fastest one, because he is meticulous, but he will do the best job and advise you, all the way through, about what’s going on and what the best solutions are.

Most excellent job of housekeeping at a very fair price. I would recommend their services to anyone. Also, Matt paint several rooms and fixed a few holes in the walls. Again, the job was done timely, at a reasonable price, and the quality of the work was excellent.

James did fantastic work recently painting the exterior of my 3200 square foot home. He also did exceptional painting on the inside of my home. He was very detailed with walls, ceilings, trim, closets, laundry room and pantry. In addition, James changed my carpets, installed shelving and window blinds. Furthermore, he cleaned my gutters, did light landscaping and secured my damaged fence. Mr. Vincente was very professional at all times. He was punctual and organized. Furthermore, he always had a smile, a positive attitude and cordial demeanor. I will definitely be calling him for all my future fixes and repairs.

Marcelo and his team at Zeus Building and Renovations cut a new, large doorway into a load-bearing wall, replaced the crown moulding in my living room and dining room, and painted my living room, dining room, and kitchen. They worked long days to finish the whole job in 6 days--ahead of schedule. Marcelo has an eye for detail, and the finish product looks great. For example, he salvaged the baseboard he removed to wrap it around the base of the new door frame; he custom-built and stained a wide wood transition strip for the the floor of the new doorway; and the moulding corners are meticulous. Friends who hadn't seen the house before thought the doorway was original. The painting is well done with very crisp lines and clean trim, and Marcelo patched a lot of lines and bumps in the walls so that an old house now looks smooth and new. He cleaned up all the drywall dust so that the house was clean when he left. Marcelo's communication was great, and he sent photo updates of his progress while I was away. His price was fair, and I would hire him again.

Painting & Light Carpentry has done more than one job for me. When I was pregnant they extended my nursery out, installed a window, replaced wood paneling with dry wall, installed baseboard heating, mounted an airconditioner painted the room, and laid carpet. Very professional, very clean, EXCELLENT PRICES, and very friendly. I will count on Painting & Light Carpentry for all my future projects.

Matt from Mint Carpentry replaced a bi-fold door in our basement with a standard hinged door. The job required a modification of the wall and trim work as well. We have been very satisfied with the quality of the work performed and Matt's professional manner. We would highly recommend Mint Carpentry!

Bob and Katrina were extremely helpful in planning and completing a project to finish our basement. They found many instances of poor quality work by the builder and were able to compensate. The finished product is outstanding.

I called Sam after finding his company on the internet. We live in Missouri, but have a small house in Waynesboro, Va. Our house had a leak from a part from the upstairs bathroom. It had probably leaked two weeks before it was noticed. Sam and his crew were right out that very day. They dryed out everything that they could, we had big dryers in all of our rooms. Our living room ceiling caved in from the water. When it was all dryed out, they ripped out the walls to studs and rebuilt the inside of our house. Our house now has fresh pain, new clean walls, new carpet in the upstairs bedroom a new vanity in the upstairs bathroom, along with a new floor! We love the work they did and they went over and beyond our expectations! I highly recommended them. On a scale of 1-10, I rate them a 12. Excellent

He always double checked everything to make sure that the walls looked great, cleaned up everything before the end of the day, and was always on time. We would definitely hire him again for any future painting that needed to be done.

I hired Wes for a repair and paint job. Wes was very kind and professional in manner. His work was top notch five star quality and professional looking. He cleaned up his work area and made sure I was completely satisfied with his work before he left. I highly recommend him! Below is a photo of the baseboard he painted. The wall was drying for a second coat so ignore that part. This baseboard before he painted it was in horrible condition and completely banged up. Now it is beautiful and polished to perfection!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
