About this pro

How does your service stand out?

Tutor A Team works only at the K-12 grade level with only licensed professionals and we work with only one person at a time and we do not require financial contracts. There is a good reason we win all the awards and that is that " We produce the best results and we use only qualified tutors."

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

The best part of my job as Founder of Tutor A Team is the gratification received by the comments made by our clients and their children. To me each client is an individual and we make it a point to not tutor anyone until we meet them and discuss the individual situation with each parent with the student present and preferably in the home environment.

The tutor has been amazing. She has really taken the time to break down the problems into more manageable bits of information and my apprentices are doing MUCH better in their class now.

We came to Tutor A team when our 16 year old son was failing math analysis. Jim was so helpful! He came to our home and met with us and our son. He spoke with our son to get a feel for which if his tutors would work well with him. He hit the nail on the head! Jacob was a perfect fit! Our main goal was to have our son pass his class for the year, which he did. Our only regret was we should have started earlier!

The tutors were wonderful and really helped our daughter with her math difficulties. They were personable, very knowledgeable, and they had a real ability to connect with her. We were very pleased.

Jim Waldman and Tutor A Team is a phenomenal resource for any parent. His personal interview with the parents and the children allows him to select just the right tutor for each child or family. I found the tutor he selected for my children to possess all the qualities necessary for our unique situation. We set goals for our kids and with the help of Jim Waldman and Tutor A Team we met those goals for each of my kids. I appreciate his attention to detail and his personal involvement in the entire process as well as his commitment to excellence.

Amanda, Many thanks for the kind words to Thumbtack about Tutor A Team. You have a great family and you have a lot of ambition and you will be successful and this will mean family and business. Keep it going and let me know if Joan or I can assist. Jim Waldman

Jim Waldman's philosophy regarding a quality tutoring program is exactly the template I would have used to set up my own company after 39 years with Chesapeake Public Schools, 33 of them as an administrator in the school system. Read the web page to understand how this model provides outstanding support for the student, parent, tutor and teacher. Helping students to achieve is the main goal of the company and is the only focus of the Tutor A Team business. We look forward to serving all students to the best of our ability.

I have been employed as a tutor with Jim Waldman since Tutor A Team's inception. He is an honest, hardworking company president, who really cares about providing individual help for students of all ages. He personally screens all his clients, and does his best to make sure the tutors assigned to them are appropriate for the subject area that needs to be improved. I wouldn't work for anyone else.

Thanks Betsy, you and Randy have been that anchor that a new company needs to success. Tutor A Team has now furnished tutoring assistance to about 250 families in the Tidewater region. Many thanks to you folks and all of the wonderful tutors that we have. Thanks again, jim

Jim and his team of tutors are excellent to work with. Jim found just the right Math tutor for me to pass my college math classes. Having been out of school for many years, I was more than just a little nervous about being back in the classroom. The one-on-one tutoring that was convenient to my schedule was perfect. Thanks Jim and the whole A++Team.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We begin with an interview with the student's family, including the student. Our goal is to completely assess the area of need and match each student with the ideal tutor -- someone who is a good fit personally and professionally. Once the tutoring begins, our tutors and families provide us with ongoing feedback to ensure a high-quality result. We don't simply assign tutors and hope for the best. We follow up regularly to make sure every student is making progress. We do not charge for this home visit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Yes, all of our tutors are licensed by the State of Virginia and as such have to maintain their education and developments in the industry. We also carry workers compensation insurance on all tutors for your protection
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Nothing complicated about our pricing, we charge by the hour or portion of an hour with a minimum of one hour at each session. We have no extras, assessments, registration fees, or testing costs. We do not have contracts with our clients but depend on the high quality to maintain our customers.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started Tutor A Team after 40+ years in education at many levels and realized that the current education system is not able to give individual attention to 20-30+ students in a particular class...all students are not the same and some need special attention that even the parents cannot provide. We fill in the gaps when necessary and we know our system works!
What types of customers have you worked with?
One-on-one in home tutoring is the only thing that we do! However, we've worked with students of all ages and abilities. K-12, college, even adults. Gifted and special education. Remediation and enrichment. We even tutored a couple of grandparents looking to learn American Sign Language so they could Skype with their deaf grandson. Our goal is to make every one of our clients happy and successful.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
We are proud of all the work that we do, and we have many success stories. Please read our testimonials on our website and talk to us prior to making a decision.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Be sure to have an in-home interview that includes the student prior to any tutoring. Ask how a tutor will ensure a personalized approach that meets your child's individual academic needs.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
We started this company in 2010 with the purpose of helping parents with the education of their children. We insist on making it work and we have a follow up procedure that reviews what happens at every tutoring session. We pay the tutors and you don't become involved in the direct payment of the tutors; your relationship with the tutor is all about your student.
