I would highly recommend Rae's Masonry for a project at your home or business.  When I called about an estimate,  Mr. Rae personally came to my home to assist me in designing my project, which consisted of repairing/replacing the bricks and slate on my front porch; building new steps and a walkway; and putting cobblestone pavers aside my driveway.  His estimate was very reasonable; which helped me stay within my project budget.  My neighbors were impressed by the craftsmanship and speed of his workers' performance. The brick masons were professional and and courteous by keeping the onsite materials organized and cleaned up their work area. They used quality materials that will keep my home looking beautiful for years to come. Masonry construction may be a lost art form to some,  but i believe it adds a classic, authentic feel to a home. Masonry unequivocally is the best choice for any home because it never goes out of style.  When I visited Shade and Wise Brick Company to choose my bricks, the representatives spoke highly of my contractor and said that Rae's Masonry would do a great job on my project. This gave me an extra comfort that this company would do a great job! Give Rae's Masonry a chance to turn your vision into reality!

Hired Chuck for lawn mowing and trimming of hedges for a rental property. He did a great job and maintained the lawn for me until I sold the house. Very professional and courteous and was quick to respond to my concerns. I highly recommend.

I used J &M this summer for landscaping in my yard and I couldn't be happier with the work they did! They had great suggestions and came up with a beautiful design. I gave them a short timeline and they delivered everything on my wish list for a great price. I'm looking forward to working with them again on future landscaping projects. Wholeheartedly recommend them for all of your landscape needs!

Michael was very professional, did an awesome job, and offered a very fair price. He's a stand-up guy and I would recommend him to anyone needing landscaping support in Richmond. I live in the Museum District, and my backyard was a mess of concrete, bamboo, concrete fountain, weeds, bushes, etc. Mike's crew came in and, in only 2 days, cleared out everything with his tractor, graded the yard, and installed gravel for off-street parking. The backyard looks spectacular now, I don't even recognize it anymore. Great guy, you're in good hands with Mike.

We had been looking for a smaller company and we found it in Garden of Eden Landscapes. We thank them so much for their professional work, personal attention, service, and upgrade to our property. We have nothing but high regard and admiration for the services rendered. Since contacting Michael to come out to our property and perform an estimate, to project completion and subsequent follow up, He and his team of experts exceeded our expectations. We struggle to express how impressed we have been, starting from the initial verbal explanation of our desires, to a rough drawing and quote provide Michael, to the professionalism and respect of his workers, to project completion. Truly, we had no idea our backyard could be so beautiful.

Chris and his team did such a great job on my rental property that I immediately retained his landscape design and lawn maintenance services for my residence. Since then he has redesigned my entire yard, installed sod and provided irrigation repair. He installed much needed shrubbery and trees specific to my homes design while taking into consideration environmental factors to ensure the longevity and perennial beauty he created. He and his team provide weekly lawn maintenance including tree trimming, mulch and weed control. They provide seeding and customized fertilization and herbicide application. They NEVER leave a mess and ALWAYS take the trash with them. Lawncare of Hampton Roads is prompt, consistent and incredibly affordable. I couldn't be happier or more grateful. -Ashley

We had a Mechanical room that was just a storage area. I needed more room to prep food and store all my extra plates and serving peices. My dream was to have a Butlers Pantry that would suit my needs and Chris Fisher of Creative Design Homes did just that. He took my needs and turned them into the most wonderful room to work in, I have floor to ceiling cabinets to store extra large peices and my dessert glasses, which I have 13 shelves full of different sizes and shapes, all sit perfectly so I can take a tray of 8 or 12 glasses at one time. The upper & lower cabinets are also designed to meet all my needs. He built me a seperate closet to house other books, coffee urns etc.... We worked with Chris for approximately 2-3 months he was very professional he procured all permits nothing was done without permits and all was up and beyond code, time including waiting for cabinets to be made and special sink to come in, inspections to be done. He took the time and effort to make my work space set apart from others with attention to the tinest details. The people he brought into our home were true professionals they respected out home and took care not to damage anything. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Before Chris was finished we had another smaller project for him, I knew if I would have waited on this someone else would snatch him up, in my laundry room there was wasted space we designed a cabinet with pull out shelves for my pots which also go from floor to ceiling. He is a very respectful man with a big heart and wonderful ideas and he listens.... and creates the most beautiful rooms ... he is very methodical, his measurements are precise ... he may take a little more time but the end results you will not be disappointed, they are wonderful. I would recommend and use Creative Homes Design without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
