We did Board&Train for a very wild but lovable Pug, Jack. Jack was 10 months old when we got him and obviously did not get proper attention prior to our adoption. Jack was wild and very skiddish. I had trained him a little but marginal success. Joseph took over while we went on vacation. He went above and beyond. Jack now responds to his commands and is a regular member of the family (instead of being a wild Pug). Joseph was very patient with the dog & the family (with kids). He has a passion for training dogs & it shows. Joseph is very conscientious and insightful. I highly recommend Board & Train, a very efficient & effective way to train your dog. Plus, Joseph's prices are very reasonable. Lastly & importantly, Joseph is an Army Veteran. It's great to support a veteran!

They were so great - thorough and patient with my dog who is 10 years old, slightly anxious, and is one who does NOT exactly love an appointment at the groomers! But they got her through it and she looks adorable!

Andrea came to my house to train my Dog, Loki. She was excellent! She observed his negative behaviors and gave me easy and EFFECTIVE ways to deflect his attention onto something more positive. We saw Andrea on Friday, 2/02/18 @ 9am and she was here for a hour. I've been using all of the techniques she taught me and although it's only been over 40 hours since she visited, Loki is already showing excellent improvement. She even called me back later Friday afternoon, to say she researched one of his more unusual behaviors and gave she gave me additional instructions for training Loki regarding this specific issue. I highly recommend Andrea from Belton Entertainment, she understands Dogs, what drives them and how to handle/control those behaviors. Good Luck!

I have 3 GSD, 2 of which were only days away from going to a rescue, or worse. We were at our wits end with them. That is until we found OLK9, I did all my home work (tried to find something bad) found no issues with OLK9. Got the money together and off the first one went to see joey he kept in constant contact with us while he had out first of 3 babies. The day we got karma back I knew we had made the right decision and had no problem bringing the next 2 for him change, joey and OLK9 are not dog trainers they are dog savers. If more people would make an investment into their dogs as quickly as we do our cars there would be a lot less animals in the shelter. Joey transformed all 3 of our dogs, I have had to call for advice here and there. Almost all the time it has been my mistake not the dogs. Not only do we still have all 3 of our dogs but one of the dogs that was on her way out, made such a turn around that we decided to breed her (never would have done that in her past). It's impossible to give joey and his staff enough stars, so I guess 5 will have to do.

Stephanie is very good at what she does!!! She is a true animal lover and it's obvious when she talks about all of her bully breed rescues turned therapy dogs! She expects them to behave well and can train them to do so, but she treats them like their people as in always makes sure they are provided for: they always have food and water, are emotionally and physically sound, and happy even away from their owners. Highly recommended !

Merissa has helped me with the training of several of my dogs! Her knowledge of dog training and behavior are outstanding, and she has a way of presenting that knowledge that makes it interesting, relatable, and useful, no matter what topic or trick she's teaching. It's clear that she loves working with dogs and their people, and I can't recommend her highly enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
