What do you love about your job?

I love being a part of special celebrations with my customers. Although every cake I make is special, weddings, first birthdays, and 100th birthdays always provide a special thrill for me because they are such unique milestones in a family's life. There are so few jobs that provide the uniqueness that I get to experience every day. When the phone rings, I never know what to expect. I could be building a cake replica of a city building, a wedding cake with a mini Toyota 4x4 leaving tire tracks up the side, or a birthday cake with a Minion popping out. Ultimately, what I love the most about my job is the expression of joy from my customers when they see their finished cake for the first time.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?

I've always said my dream job would be to become a Pastry Chef. When mine and my husband's companies downsized, we decided to take the plunge. I have extensive food service management and marketing skills, so I just needed to learn to decorate. I worked with some exceptional cake and cookie decorators for about a year and a half. I also took classes with some of the greats like Nicholas Lodge, Marina Sousa, and Maggie Austin. I launched the business in July 2013, and it was an instant success. Wedding dates were booked six to nine months in advance, and other cakes are booked about six weeks out. Our customers say our cakes are the best they have ever tasted, but the real reward is when folks say they don't like cake but couldn't stop eating ours.
