We needed a deep cleaning on several rooms of our house on short notice. Cleaning Fairy was very accommodating, and the price was fair. I was impressed because the crew was on time, thorough, and very polite and professional. They were also compassionate towards the situation our family was facing, which was kind and appreciated. The cleaning itself was thorough yet efficient. The price was very reasonable for the amount of work done. We will absolutely be using Cleaning Fairy again, and would recommend them to our friends who need similar services.

I have had several opportunities to work with Bell Remodeling, and each of them have exceeded my expectations. The last contract involved a complete bathroom remodeling, including specialty tile work and the selection of some custom pieces. Even with some challenges we presented with our choices, Mr. Bell managed his General Contractor team to provide an on-time excellently tailored product to our satisfaction. I would highly recommend BRC for large jobs and small for any household or business!

I can't say enough about the professionalism, integrity, and work ethic of Jay and his crew. They are great carpenters that can tackle just about any household construction or repair task. They did a number of jobs for us and the results were excellent. They are very reasonably priced and at a time when contractors can be unreliable and may not even show up, J is a man of his word and his reliability is unquestionable. We liked their work so much that we're planning to have them metal-clad the trim on our house as well. Will recommend them to anyone looking for great carpenters or handyman for any jobs around the house.

My fiancé and I were combining households and needed help deciding where to hang, and actually hanging pictures. Shelly came to the house and listened to our thoughts then came back the next week with a plan. She did a great job and we love it. We were so confident that we asked her to buy a few pictures to fill in the blanks which see did and they are perfect We have recommended Shelly to friends and wouldn't hesitate to hire her again.

I interviewed and received quotes from at least 10 different contractors. it was a nightmare!! Doug is a breath of fresh air in the contractor madness. He is VERY responsive and gets the job done quick and effective. First off his original quote was incredibly reasonable. Then when we found mold and several other obstacles along the way. again his prices was reasonable and the job was done quickly. He was sensitive to our household needs and i could always count on his responsiveness to my calls or text messages. And of course his work speaks for itself. we could not be happier with the jobs he performed and will definitely be using him in the future with all of our household needs. Do yourself a favor and hire Doug. I have done the research for you, there really isn't a better or more fair contractor on the peninsula.

Unbeatable prices for parts/repairs and ginuine compassion for the families they service. Needless to say, I will be using their services for many years to come!!

I have known Mr. Taylor for over 30 years and after the death of my husband 15 years ago, I contacted him on several occasions for different task around my home. He has painted the inside and outside of my home, replaced storm doors, fixed plumbing problems, clean my carpets, clean my windows inside and out, removed discarded furniture and other household items. Also did roof repair, cut down limbs from overgrown trees, taken care of my lawn work. When my daughter was moving he assisted her in moving her furniture to her new apartment. As a general contractor he has done a lot of home repairs for me. He makes sure that the work is done correct and to your satisfaction. His prices are also reasonable. He is also very reliable. I provide detailed work that clients can see with the naked eye.

I have a love for clean and tidy, whether it be your closet, your relationship, or your questions. I have always found tremendous joy in helping others and strive to do so in any way that I can, and I have plenty of experience in everything, from organizing your pantry space to answering that lingering question of who the other woman might be, from encouraging your hopes and dreams to encouraging you through hard times. I am a well-rounded individual with much more to offer than any standard resume could begin to touch on.

I am a single mom based in Norfolk, VA. My housecleaning business began in 2007. Due to the economy, the business slowed down tremendously. Years went by, and slowly but surely, I started getting more and more calls for my service. My work speaks for itself. I specialize in detailed housecleaning (windows, baseboards, ceiling fans, stoves, ovens, refrigerators, all cracks and corners, etc.). I give an immediate response and results you can see.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

      What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
