I had a significant number of things for John to do - install lighting in the bathrooms, install a microwave, change the outdated fixtures in the kitchen and front porch to recessed lighting and, toughest of all, to create storage in a knee wall/divider. Since moving here in 2012, I found John to be one of the first service persons that actually 1) had a plan, 2) had a timeline and 3) followed them both. He said he would have it all done in a week - and did! Plus, the results showed excellent workmanship and a wonderful customer-service attitude. I will definitely call on him again in the future.

My wife and I hired James to rebuild our back deck. After consulting with him and seeing another job he had done, we were more than eager to hire him. James did an OUTSTANDING job on our deck! His meticulous nature and perfectionist attitude were exactly what we were looking for. He kept us informed of all that he had going on. He was very upfront about the price and in the end we paid just a bit more than what was originally quoted. This however; was because we agreed to make some changes to the project that if we hadn't, it would not have looked as good. James gives his wood work a personal touch that you don't see from big chain stores and larger companies. He is professional, courteous, polite, clean, hard-working, and trustworthy. I would recommend him to anyone looking for home improvement!!! Thanks James and Kendra!!!

Spencer did a great job on my front porch, side porch and back stairs. He showed up when he said he was going to and did the work he said he was going to do. He kept in touch with me when problems arose and took care of them. I would highly recommend him and gladly use him again when needed. Thank you Spencer.

Keefer Building Services put in several hundred feet of vinyl deck railings for me. They did an excellent job. After a few months of installation a few of the finials on top of the posts blew off. He came out within a couple of days and replaced them. A First Class Company doing a First Class job.

Hired KLM to build a vaulted screen porch on existing deck. The artistry in design, quality of detailed craftsmanship, and pleasant disposition of Tim and crew made the 6-week project worth every penny. If you need quick cookie cutter work, hire someone else; if you need personalized time-honored construction that thinks through every detail call KLM.

I have nothing but good things to say about this contractor/friend. I've found that one of the harder tests of friendship is doing business with them. In this case I have no regrets. In the past four years I have bought a home, had to move out of town and rent that home. Adams Home Renovations has helped with: Put up a new fence, installed a door, painted and prepared my rental property between tenants, repaired my eve and roof when I incurred wind damage. I have referred them to family members: For my father - replaced a barn door, put down new flooring on the sun porch, noticed some bad water damage and repaired the gutters and some supports. For my mother - put in a new door after her home got broken into. Went out of their way to get this done in a hurry. Remodeled a bathroom, painted and installed ceiling fans. For my Aunt - Touched up some mortar, put up a facade to hide some computer wires and exposed structural steel, and repaired concrete at the threshold at her garage door. There are several other jobs they have done, and I (and their clients) have been pleasantly by their work. I'll be frank, the people at Adams Home Renovations are friends of mine. I have had problems doing business with other friends in the past. But if I ever had a single problem with the work Adams Home Renovations have done for me, my friends and my family, I wouldn't keep recommending them for any job large or small.

Austin did a great job building my deck for me. He was very attentive to detail and the quality of his work was excellent. He was always on time and worked as long as possible to get the job done in a timely manner. Very professional. I would highly recommend him. Deck was a 12x24 and it turned out great. Couldn't ask for anything better.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
