We hired Kay to do a deeper cleaning - including baseboards, inside windows/sills, etc. I really liked Kay and the additional person she brought to clean my elderly parent's house. They were very polite and worked non-stop for 7 hours. We uncluttered the surface areas of the rooms before they got there so they could work more efficiently, but the house is still almost 3,800 sq. feet, so it was not a small job. In addition, the upstairs air conditioning when out the night before. I communicated that to her and she said it was not a problem. It was in the 80's on the second floor and they still cleaned it. She was very open and transparent in that she asked that I do a walk-through when they finished, to make sure it was cleaned to my liking and that nothing was overlooked. A small bathroom was missed, but I overlooked it in my walk-through and have missed that little bathroom in the past when I've cleaned my parent's house - so I'm not holding that one against her. Had I looked, I am confident she would have been quick to acknowledge the oversight and cleaned it. I would highly recommend her. She is a hard worker and takes pride in her work.

I knew this was the right company to hire to replace my roof just by talking to Mike Reedy on the phone, he explained to me that before he comes to give me an estimate on my roof that his company will be a slightly higher price than some of the others around the area. So i ask him why, his reply was because im gona do it right and if i touch it its gona be replaced, i dont cut corners and i dont reuse anything. I thought to myself thank god finally someone that has not lost the old ways of doing thing, finally someone that cares, someone that wants the best roof on my house as much as i do. Mike refuses to give you anything but the most superior product on the market and he will not even let his crew install anything else. This man went way above and beyond anything i ever expected, for one i was having problems with HOA of my community on the color of shingles i wanted to put on my house and believe it or not Mike Reedy went to next HOA board meeting to defend me and resolve the situation, i was completely amazed. He did everything from getting a dumpster delivered and picked up to going to get the permit to do the work, and going to the HOA meeting on his own time. I didn't' have to do anything and absolutely no headaches at all, and that piece of mind was completely priceless. They finished my roof and cleaned the after themselves, spotlessly, I couldn't even find so much as a nail on the ground after they left. I was amazed once again. All and all i would recommend this company to everyone, and for the slightly higher estimate of 350 mizzly bucks i got all that ive already listed with the highest quality product on the market installed with the best craftsmanship ive seen in a very long time with absolutely zero dollars in surprise charges. well single worth every penny.

Replace 2 sliding glass doors in condo in Town Center area of Virginia Beach. Did the job in a very timely and professional manner. Accidentally broke a window in the repair but appears to be handling it as quickly as possible now thankfully. Otherwise, great experience and very nice guy.

Working with Keith Tyree was an excellent experience. He was prompt, courteous and professional. Most importantly, he was able to fix our leaking roof and windows quickly and at a fair price. I would be happy to call Keith for any future repairs.

I lost 1/2 of my vinyl siding, insulation wrap and window screens from the Labor day storm named "Hermine". Mr. Shakallis provided an extremely competitive estimate and assured me of how he would go above and beyond with the materials to ensure the siding would remain in place during future storms; this was most important since the home is on the waterfront and faces higher than usual winds on a daily basis. Additionally, Ricky said that he would complete the work as quickly as possible, so the bare wood would not be exposed to any additional rain storms. Ricky's team arrived early and had the entire job completed by 4pm. Ricky perfectly matched the new vinyl siding color to the existing siding and color. Amazing! I am extremely pleased with Ricky's work and would recommend him to anyone needing new or repairs to siding, screens or roofing. Thanks, Ray

Todd's Painting is a great choice. The job was my garage door. My HOA said it needed to be painted. I wanted a professional. Todd got back to me right away and kept in touch regularly through the project. He came quickly to give an estimate, gave me recommendations about buying paint and I hot his discount at the paint store. It was only a few days from the time I posted my project to when the project was completed. Todd was flexible, professional, and timely. He did a great job.

Recently wrapped up a complete bathroom reno including cast iron tub removal/replacement, partial removal of interior wall, installation of new shower valves, retiled walls and floor and some other fine details. The job started on 2/4/16 and was completed on 3/9/16. Andy was very knowledgeable, trustworthy and professional and also presented some very innovative ideas to help us achieve custom results. His price was more than fair for the extent of the work required and everything we requested was completed to our satisfaction. One thing I would advise is to make sure all of the specifics are included in the contract from the start so there are no last minute suprise expenses, as I sort of encountered when I mentioned painting the refinished walls. Based on my previous experience with these kind of projects I figured painting was an implied part of finishing resurfaced walls but apparently that was not the case in this scenario. However, I do realize the cost of business varies from person to person so I was willing to have this service added to the bill but, unfortunately, the estimate I recieved would have put us over budget so I decided to just paint it myself. Again, not knocking Andy, just word to the wise to always remember to get it in writing and never assume anything is implied. In conclusion, I highly recommend Andy and Glenn if you're looking for quality craftsmanship with custom flare for very competitive prices. If you have a job you are considering 4 Seasons Flooring for and they are available within your desired timeline, stop shopping around and HIRE THEM.

I have worked with Mark Barrett, owner of Top Notch General Contracting for almost 10 years. He has basically redone my entire home...from exterior doors and windows, gutting and remodeling baths, removing a fireplace and reworking the roof, and much more! He has gutted and installed a brand new kitchen at my Mom's home and completed work at many of my real estate client's homes. Top Notch contractors are particularly excellent carpenters and drywall installers, but they can do any job you need. Mark is timely and does what he says he is going to do. If a subcontractor does not do a job right, Mark will redo it himself until you are satisfied. I will not work with anyone but Top Notch!

Greg was very responsive in coming to the property & providing an estimate. He returned as agreed & did the job quickly & neatly. The before & after difference is tremendous as he had to get rid of decayed wood around windows & replace all door parts. He cleaned up very well after the job was finished & made sure everything was in good working order.

This is a solicited review, but one I give so others can benefit. I was just waiting for a place to send one. The service I requested was to replace 12 windows with new "Super Windows". Luckily I came across the American Builders advertisement before I went with other quotes received during the estimates period I went through, or I would have been disappointed afterward considering what I saved. It took a Crew of 3 men one and one-half hours to completely remove and replace the existing single pane old windows. It looked like a war zone until the job was done, but if I had to do it again I would. The efficiency and quality of the products received is the same I had seen from other vendors who should just stop trying to compete. The best sellers for the replacement windows is obviously the competitors of "American Builders". I don't think there was a choice that would have been better, considering the end results. I use electric heating and can tell the difference in retention of produced heat since replacement of the old windows during this current winter. The double pane replacement definitely makes a difference when compared to the single pane windows I had replaced. The glass inside does not even get hot like the single panes did in past summers. This gives me a more efficient cooling with Air Conditioning. The other companies competing should just start a Maid Cleaning Service, and tell their potential customers "We don't do Windows" because they are no competition for American Builders with what they do advertise now as installers. Get your quotes. Do some shopping. Then you decide. I think I went in the right direction, and once you do the comparison you will too. I am thus far satisfied with the product, installation, and efficiency of the "Super Window".

I have known Mr. Taylor for over 30 years and after the death of my husband 15 years ago, I contacted him on several occasions for different task around my home. He has painted the inside and outside of my home, replaced storm doors, fixed plumbing problems, clean my carpets, clean my windows inside and out, removed discarded furniture and other household items. Also did roof repair, cut down limbs from overgrown trees, taken care of my lawn work. When my daughter was moving he assisted her in moving her furniture to her new apartment. As a general contractor he has done a lot of home repairs for me. He makes sure that the work is done correct and to your satisfaction. His prices are also reasonable. He is also very reliable. I have referred him to other friends and family.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
