Doug Lewis Remodeling
About this pro
They did a total remodel of my kitchen. Removed a wall and worked with me on getting the cabinets I wanted. They are extremely helpful and finished the job in the way that I wanted it done. I would highly recommend them and I would definitely use them again for future projects.Apr 14, 2016Verified

Doug and his crew recently installed a new kitchen in my home. Here is a breakdown of my experience. We called Doug over for a walk through/estimate. Doug showed up on time, which was very important to me when I was looking to hire a contractor. While examining my space Doug was very detailed oriented, he pointed out problem spots, and made amazing suggestions. We have a small entry way from our kitchen to our living room, one suggestion Doug made which to this day I think is brilliant was to angle-cut the granite counter top on both sides by 45 degrees, this allowed for a wider entry way while maintaining a large counter-top space. The walkthrough didn't last 15 minutes as it did with two other contractors that came to give me quotes. The entire process was close to two hours and we discussed every detail of my kitchen project. Doug submitted a detailed break-down of the entire project from tearing out the old cabinets, drywalling, painting, flooring, installation, plumbing etc. He submitted his timetable to us and I was glad when he came in ahead of schedule by 3 days. On the job, Doug was very personable, and he always returned my call within the hour (even on Sunday). His subs were very professional, they listened and explained every part of the process as they were doing it. If there was a problem Doug was always there to resolve it. Things always come up on a project, adjustments have to be made, or minds change. The best part was Doug's knowledge. Sometimes he would make suggestion before I was able to verbalize them. My wife and I felt in sync with Doug during the entire process. He never tried to up-sell us or recommended options that where junk. He built my kitchen to my specification, and for the space, it's the best kitchen I could ever hope for. Suggestions: Make sure you make arrangements to either eat out of the house for the next few weeks, or keep a toaster oven and microwave in another room. Also, dust can be an issue. Doug sealed off the kitchen with plastic on both ends and his crew vacuumed the dust every day. Out of the three contractors I've used since I moved to Richmond in 2003, Doug is by far the best, and I have no reservations in recommending him.Mar 26, 2014

- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Yes. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers frequent webinars, in-person courses, and networking events. I'm in the works to obtain my CAPS certification - a Certified Aginging in Place Professional.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?It was a no-brainer to get into contracting. I've always been interested in real estate and homes, and I've dabbled in these fields since graduating from college years ago. Eventually, my friends and family began asking me to manage their remodeling projects and so my hobby developed into my business.
- What types of customers have you worked with?My clients have such a range of needs for their homes, it's hard to say what is "common" or "typical." We've done quite a few bathroom and kitchen remodels in the past. In fall of 2013, everyone wanted their porch or deck redone - not sure why, but we got a lot of those requests. We've also done multi-room additions, custom built homes, and small odd-ball jobs.
