I hired Cesar Velasquez of Cesar Design to mount a flat screen TV and repair a bi-fold closet door. Cesar and his team were great - they showed up on time, were very friendly, listened to what I needed done, and did the job well. I would highly recommend Cesar Design for any handyman project.

Hi Solutions is awesome. We have been looking for a handyman for awhile and we feel that we have found our handyman. Walt was very responsive and within 24hours of our project post, they reached out and preformed the services. We needed our kitchen faucet replaced. Christopher came out to install our faucet. He was personable, knowledgeable, and worked hard. He explained what he was doing and assured us that we bought a decent faucet. We look forward to hiring them again to do some more work.

What awesome customer service. Herbert was by far the BEST Handyman that I've hired through thumbtack. After agreeing on a time and date, Herbert arrived on time and was genuine. I hired him to hang a few curtain rods and a somewhat large mirror. He assessed the space and explained to me how he would hang all of the items. He had everything he needed and worked efficiently. On top of that, his prices were extremely reasonable. I plan on hiring him for ALL of my handyman jobs in the future. Highly recommend!

We hired Nico for handyman projects around our 85 years old house. He did excellent job with drywall and window sill repair and also helped us install kitchen cabinets. Nico is super nice and easy to work with. He came well prepared with tools and showed up on time. Don't get fooled by his company name. He does more than painting and does it well. His repair was so flawless we forgot where the holes were. We hired him hourly and his rate was very reasonable. We will be his repeat customer.

This was my first time using Thumbtack and I was pleasantly surprised. I chose JJ Contracting Services because of their fast and thorough communication, ability to have quick turnaround of estimate and work completion, and their knowledge of the projects I wanted to have done. A bonus was that this father/son duo was so pleasant to work with -- they were so nice and hard-working. You can tell that Jose Senior has been doing this kind of work for a long time and that Jose Junior is very good with people. It's a good combination. They completed the handyman projects in less time than they originally thought which was a bonus and did everything I asked them to do. I had one doorknob that needed to be fixed but I didn't know if it was actually possible and I didn't want to replace it (because it was original). When I got home, everything was done AND the doorknob was fixed! I could tell they really wanted to make sure it worked for us. I plan to work with JJ Contracting again and have already talked to them about future projects.

I needed a plasterer for a pretty small job, finishing an 8' section of drywall. I don't have the skills or the patience to do it myself. Mike was super-responsive, turned up when he said he would and gave me a good price, great service and cleaned everything up when he finished. He even did another little repair for me in another room. I would definitely use him again.

The Name on his business card "handyman" is both consistent with his own assessment of his business model and technical capabilities, and in my opinion, he is a very honorable professional smart enough to not take on a project that has any chance of disappointing the client. I would strongly recommend him to anyone.

Jesus was great! After another company tried to upsell me on expensive work to my front porch that I didn't want or need, "Master Handyman" Jesus Paredes gave me honest information on what repairs I actually needed and offered excellent work at a fair price. The work took less time than expected, and Jesus left me the unused materials so I could return them to Home Depot for a refund, so the project wound up costing less than the original estimate. I will certainly call Master Handyman for future projects -- they do carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, drywall, pressure washing and more -- and I would recommend them without hesitation.

We lost our long-time handyman when he moved away and subsequently tried 4 or 5 others, none of whom were satisfactory. Then we found Shane! He charges a fair price, is friendly and competent, calls back or messages promptly, and checks up after his visit to be sure the work is satisfactory. He is also good at giving suggestions on how to improve the space he worked on, and cleans up the space when he is finished. We will definitely continue to call on Shane for work around our house and have recommended him to friends and neighbors. I recommend him to you, too!

We hired Dylan to re-attach some siding that came loose in a windstorm. He quickly did that, and then I asked him to tackle several other jobs that we have had lingering around for months. The work involved plumbing, electrical and structural tasks. He happily did them all - quickly and very capably. We found him to be very professional and pleasant to work with. It's been a long time since we had a good, responsible handyman to work with - but we found Dylan and he is now our man. We already have plans to get some more projects done in a few weeks. Highly recommended - five stars for DTS!

Work was done quickly and quality was very good. Gustavo sealed and stained two sets of outdoor steps. He finished off one of the landings with lattice work that the contractor that installed the steps left unfinished. He reinforced areas that had become loose, cleaned out the gutters and replaced some sensor lights that I could not reach. I'm sure I'll be calling on him again for large and small jobs needed around my home.

Michael and his team did a great job on a lot of diverse handyman needs around our house and yard (landscaping beams installed expertly, replacing a bathroom fan vent, replacing a leaky faucet, and reattaching the soap tray in our daughters bathtub). He even talked me through making some repairs myself to save some money! Incredibly grateful for the wonderful work - and already scheduling a second appointment for a few more minor repairs!

Sean is very knowledgeable in many different areas of home construction, and was able to save me a lot of money on materials at Home Depot by using the Pro Desk (he use to be a top salesman there). He has done several projects for me and did a good job at reasonable rates. Craig - Clarksburg MD

Beyond my expectations. Not only was my home and deck cleaned to look like new, the additional work to repair the steps and side porch area made it safer and much better looking. The deck sealing was excellent, too. I'll definitely call again for other handyman jobs. And I'm pleased to recommend his work to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
