Carlos was quick to respond to my request and came out the same day for an estimate. His quote was very reasonable and he was able to schedule my job within a few days. I was so amazed at the quality of the work they did. I expected them to spray weed killer on the weeds in my rock bed but they literally used a pick to dig out all the weeds under about 100 feet of river rock. All of the weeding and trimming was done beautifully and the mulch also ended up looking beautiful. They worked for 8 hours on a day that was pouring rain off and on. It was way more than I expected. I am so impressed and would highly recommend. I will definitely keep his card for future landscaping work.

Polo helped us install new sod, cut Branches from a huge pine tree to bring in more light, plant a bunch of plants and trees, and install landscaping pavers. It was a complete redo. Working with Polo was great. He has an excellent attitude, is very patient and helpful, and is very reasonable on pricing. Looking forward to doing more projects with his team.

I hired R&R hardscapes to build a complex deck with a roof and finished underneath of the deck equipped with lighting and electrical outlets. When I approached Ricardo, owner of R&R and let him know what my idea was he gave me great advise on what materials to use to fit into my budget. One of my biggest challenges in living in the northwest with a deck was having to replace deck boards all the time, even when treated. Ricardo told me about brazillian hard woods and the benefits of this product. Mind you that I was trying to find the right contractor foe this deck for 2 years and out of the 10 contractors I spoke with not a single one told me about brazillian iron woods, probably because of how expensive the product was and how much time it takes to install. These hardwoods last 75+ years. Ricardo was able to come up with a plan for my dream to have this extension added to my house and fit it into my budget. Most contractors didn't want to touch the project because of how complex it was. Ricardo has a real sense for what I wanted to create for my family so that I can enjoy it in all seasons. His first thing was safety. I didn't want a bunch of cross boards hindering my view both on the top of the deck and under the deck. He poored nearly 2000 pounds of concrete under each support pole and doubled the size of the footings to make it super stable, enough to put 2 elephants on my 350 square foot deck. Let me tell you that my deck is the talk of the neighborhood. Everyone wants to come over and hang out. Another thing a really appreciate about Ricardo is he always picks up the phone to talk to you when you have questions and I had a lot of questions. He did such a great job on my deck that I contracted him to do my pavers under the deck and souronding areas and my fence. Check out the pictures.

This past month my wife and I hired Alex (Alex Concrete) to excavate and grade a 29' x 18' portion of our backyard, build a 32' x 30" reinforced retaining wall, pour a 18' x 12' patio slab with thickened edges, and place post brackets for a deck and patio cover for our home in Ballard. From estimate to finish the project took two and half weeks and we are very satisfied with the results. Alex was able to provide us with an estimate and detailed proposal of work within 48 hrs over a holiday weekend. The price was very reasonable compared against 4 other estimates. He completed every action item on the proposal. He was very patient and helped us work through and trouble shoot some structural and design issues as well as reinforced and poured some extra concrete pieces to improve the quality and function of our design at no extra cost. Alex and his team were friendly, professional, and hardworking throughout the duration of the project. We will gladly recommend Alex Concrete to any friends and neighbors in need of a concrete contractor in the future.

I would hire Jorge back in an instant. For him, it seemed like it was more than just painting someone else's house. He took the time and effort to do a wonderful job. He was flexible to the changes we requested. He fairly priced the job and didn't overcharge us for the changes. I highly recommend this painter/contractor. --Charlie

Great job! I am a contractor also. These guys are experts. I have a lot of very tricky branches surrounding electrical wires, fence lines and gas lines. They cleaned up afterwards and everything. Very professional. Like they weren't even here. Besides the tree limb removal. Thanks again! Highly recommend!

Working with Rodger was great. I appreciate his willingness to take on small projects with me as I need contractors/handymen off and on around my property. In addition to being cost-competitive, he was very thorough, demonstrated by; initial bid, onsite validation of bid, responsive start/completion of project, and quality work. I’ll hire this company in the future for sure.

I just had a new patio installed by Allstar Development and am very pleased with the outcome. After searching for several contractors I decided on Allstar because of the professional approach provided by George Spillmann. After meeting George and talking through my needs and concerns, I decided to go ahead with using Allstar for completing the project. What impressed me was that George did what he said he would do. Initially he scheduled an onsite meeting and then submitted a professional proposal. He also made some adjustments to allow me to apply the accent and sealer the next day. Not only did he provide the material for the accent and sealer but he also took the time to explain how to apply it and provided some of the needed tools. Everything went well with all of his suppliers showing up on time and completing the job as specified.

I hired KD&D to get my overgrown yard back to looking like a normal yard. They exceeded my expectations. They put in a lot of work on my overgrown grass, trees, bushes and flowerbeds which transformed my yard to make it look nicer than when I originally bought my house.

I would definitely recommend Brian and his team at Craftsman Construction. I now come home everyday to my dream Kitchen! I have worked with other contractors in the past and I have to admit- we were a little scared to undergo such a big project, but from our first meeting to the very end Brian made us feel very much at ease. The quality workmanship, professionalism, and time on the project was awesome. Brian was able to see our vision and make it into a reality. His experience was also a big help in directing us on ideas that would add to our homes resale value but also stay within our budget. Aside from their customer service, the quality and finish work once the project was complete blew me away. We couldn't be happier! Thank you Brian!!

From the very first meeting, we felt at ease working with Fernando. He understood what we were wanting to accomplish with our kitchen remodel and offered cost saving suggestions and even space planning advice. The final product was a beautiful and practical move-in ready remodel. I've worked with a lot of contractors in the past and Vennux is a good combination of large-scale, commercial project experience in a residential setting. The team was efficient, creative and polite.

I had an excellent experience working with Gil and his team. He was professional, made great recommendations, connected us with an experienced designer, walked us through every step of our landscaping project and provided fair and detailed pricing. He brought a wealth of knowledge about plants and materials and his team was always on time and a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend PLG Construction and plan to hire them again in the future.

Best Concrete removed my old sidewalk and installed a new sidewalk and steps at my residence. Mausia Folau, the owner, was very responsive and professional from the bidding process through project completion. I picked the rainiest month of the year to have this work done, but he managed to get it completed on one of the drier days of March. Mausia communicated through the entire process and there were no surprises. I am an extremely picky person and things have to be perfect. Best Concrete delivered a product and service beyond my expectations. The crew was very polite and professional. I had several bids for this project and Best Concrete was very fair with their pricing. I would highly recommend Best Concrete and am planning another project this spring or summer and would not hesitate to contact Best Concrete for further concrete projects. I am sure you will be very pleased with their work and professionalism.

Sam is the best contractor I’ve ever hired. Last year I purchased a home and quickly found out it had serious water damage. Sam was quick to come and assess the damage. Proworks repaired the damage for way less money than I thought I would have to spend. The quality of the work was outstanding, it was better than new. I would absolutely recommend Proworks to anyone, and I will definitely be using them again for any construction needs I have in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
