Introduction: Michael Wheatley has been teaching violin and piano lessons for over 25 years. He is an alumnus of music programs at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Peter the Great Music Academy (St. Petersburg, Russia), and holds a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Wheatley teaches private lessons on piano and violin in your home or remotely online. Additionally, Michael offers lessons in orchestral conducting as well as private coaching dedicated to understanding the competition and audition process. Michael brings humor and great professionalism to his students’ lessons following a lively "work hard, play hard" ethic. While his focus is on teaching piano and violin lessons specifically, he takes a more holistic approach to music than is commonly found in many studios. Of course, all study begins with an emphasis on healthy posture and physical technique, allowing for the possibility of a lifetime of enjoyment in the performance of music of all styles. However, you will find that he is also very focused on music as a communicative art. Music is meant to express and evoke emotions in both the performer and the listener. Thus, his students are taught by musicians who are not only skilled teachers, but also very active and experienced concert performers. *Discounts are offered for siblings, or for lessons held remotely (via Zoom).

We have been taking piano lessons from Mr. Wheatley for about 4 months. Overall it has been a great experience. He has a casual air but is a stickler with technique. Mr. Wheatley's style is a good fit for someone who is put off by the formality of many classical piano teachers but want to learn classical piano. We would recommend his services without hesitation.

Michael is very patient and has so much positive attitude when it comes to teaching. I absolutely knew nothing about piano, and he has made my learning experience very enjoyable so far. He is very professional with a great sense of humor which helps to ease the stress for beginners. I definitely recommend him to everyone!

Really happy with my lessons. Michael is patient and kind. He never makes me feel inadequate as I am a very much a beginner. He is also clearly very skilled himself but is able to translate his experience into teaching, which is rare. He has lots of lesson times available and is very flexible. I can't recommend him highly ebough!

FAQs

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

While the term "customer" doesn't exactly apply to music instruction, there are a few things I wish students (and possibly their parents) had a better understanding of. The first is related to logistics. When a student can't attend a scheduled lesson, that time is still theirs. I'm still in the studio and working on their behalf, researching repertoire, curriculum, and preparing for their future lessons. Also about the business side of music instruction, there is a lot 'behind the scenes' that goes into this profession- my time teaching is just one small piece of managing a studio. I love what I do and have dedicated my entire life to passing on excellence in music. My students each are dear to me, their progress and development both personally and musically are organizing forces in my life. Because of that, deep respect and communication are essential to thriving relationships.
