About this pro

How does your business stand out?

With thirty years of experience, a fully equipped downtown studio and a keen artistic eye, Phil Rose is the photographer to turn to for creating unforgettable commercial images or to capture life's most beautiful moments. Please note that, while you will probably receive several cheaper bids on this site, Thumbtack sadly suffers from something of a 'race to the bottom' problem where cheaper but less skilled, talented and experienced photographers win out. Reasonably good digital cameras are now so affordable it has led to a glut of low quality 'professionals' here. For your shoot, especially your wedding, please look more at reviews and prior work. Any re-shoot is expensive and time consuming. If your wedding photographs are a disaster a re-shoot is simply not an option. You wouldn't hire just anyone who could afford a power saw to build you a house. Don't make the same mistake with your precious and unrepeatable life event!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

I enjoy the creativity and variety it affords me. I couldn't NOT be a photographer!

We waited for one half hour and he did not show up. But he did refund my money and offered me a discount for another shoot.

This was the first time I have ever missed a shoot and I apologized profusely for it and, as stated, offered a discount on future work. It's not an excuse but this shoot turned out to be a couple of days before I went in for surgery and it was an honest mistake due to thinking more about that which I'm afraid happens to the best of us. I do wish they had called (my number is on the Thumbtack page) as I then would have been there within ten minutes but nonetheless, a full refund was give.

Phil and Lola were great! They were helpful and easy to reach before the wedding day. They arrived to the event earlier and worked so well together in directing and taking pictures. They are very nice, funny and professional. Had a blast working with them! Excited to see the pictures I don't have any doubt that they will look amazing!

He was so professional and so kind to speak with. I had a few spur of the moment shots that he was able to incorporate with ease, and I thank him profusely for it. Would totally recommend to all of my friends. :)

Very professional. He made every effort to get the shots we wanted. Both he and his assistant were very personable. Several of our guests like them and asked how we found him

We had a Santa photo party and open house with Phil doing professional quality photographs for everyone who wanted shots done. Everyone had a good time, lots of pictures got taken and everything was available on line for download the next day. Phil was very patient and remained available to everyone with good humor (including barking dogs and crying children) for the entire 3 hours.

I have worked with Phil numerous times as Creative Director in the fashion genre for TONI&GUY. He brings a unique point of view and quality to the imagery he creates that is apparent in his portfolio no matter what he is shooting. In fact utilizing Phil as my photographer has given me an edge in competition within my field ranking among the top 3 in the North American continent for TONI&GUY Photographic Awards for 2 consecutive years. I appreciate his attention to detail and his organizational and communicative skills.

I have worked with Phil for nine years. He has hosted the websites at my two nonprofit organizations. Quick turn-around time, responsive, professional! I've also hired him for family photos. Awesome, on time, open to client ideas and creativity! He even gave our homeless shelter a much-reduced rate; so he's a good guy, too!

I needed my very detailed, engraved glasswork professionally photographed to present to potential clients. This is a very difficult thing to do because of the glare and reflections - it is tricky subject matter in all aspects.. Phil did an exceptional job, VERY quickly and VERY reasonably priced. I am extremely happy with his work and will use his expertise for more photographs as soon as I need them.

I received two quotes from Thumbtack, I selected Phil because his quote included up to one hour of studio time if needed. This was by far more generous then the other quote and sent a message Phil would put in the time to make his customer happy. Interestingly, the photo shoot (head shot) only took at 15 minutes anyway. He is friendly, polite, and very skilled at his trade. I certainly would use him in the future.

Phil Rose is a wonderful photographer and we highly recommend him! We hired him for our wedding and we could not be more pleased. We got married at Broadway Hall in Bellingham on July 20th. Neither my husband or I are from the area, so we did not know where to do the pictures. Phil was very helpful and even went out early to find the perfect place to do our reveal photos. He then provided walkie-talkies to insure that my husband and I would not run into each other on the way to the reveal (so smart!). I gave him a list of must have photos and was very pleased that he not only insured we had them, but he also had great ideas of his own for other pictures. Phil and his assistant Lola make a wonderful team and are not only talented, but very nice and respectful people. One of my favorite things about Phil is that he puts all of the pictures that turned out online for everyone to see! We had over 1,000 photos that my family and friends can go on and look at, download, and print (we received all the pictures on a disk). He also hand edited 15 pictures of our choosing (wow what a difference hand editing makes!), and gave them to us at a higher quality. My mother is very happy that she can go through all the pictures, find the ones she wants, e-mail Phil, and she can get hand edited pictures too. It was so nice to have a photographer as flexible and friendly as Phil with such talent. We HIGHLY recommend him!

Aw, shucks! Too kind. This couple could not have been more pleasant, fun and easy to work with. It was a genuine pleasure.

Phil Rose shot a studio session with me and my son a couple of years ago. The results were excellent, a comprehensive series of portraits of the two of us as well as single shots of my son. I had an idea for a very tight shot of the two of us together to juxtapose my unshaven, wrinkly face with my son's young, unblemished face. Phil nailed it perfectly. I was delighted with the shoot and have had a number of reprints done since. Phil is always accommodating and I have no hesitation in recommending his photography.

I am a model and have collaborated with Phil a few times now on artistic and studio shoots. He is absolutely professional and easy to work with. Some of my best portfolio shots to date were taken with him! He shows up on time, knows his stuff and gets great results.

We use Phil Rose twice a year to shoot photos for The Bellingham Herald's Northwest Dining Guide. It can be hard to coordinate schedules with restaurant owners, but Phil is flexible and makes it work. His photos are high-quality and drive business to our featured restaurant. We highly recommend

Phil has worked with me on two occasions, both business related. His pricing was excellent, the product perfect, and the personal attention to the finished product satisfying. I actally looked good in the picture :) Phil is quick to make suggestions and has a talented eye. I would recommend Phil as your first choice when selecting a photographer for literally any event.

I use Phil for commercial work and am impressed by every job he does for me. He's quick to respond, delivers exactly what I ask for and produces very high quality images. I'm especially impressed with his ability to integrate his personal creativity and unique eye into his commercial work. I highly recommend Phil for his quality work and he's an all around nice fella too.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
My typical process really depends upon project. A lot of my work is in wedding photography and this is the arena which has the most options and requires the most personalisation. If the couple is local the ideal situation is for us to meet for a cup of coffee which comes with no obligation and which I will even buy! At this meeting we would talk over exactly what couple is looking for and decide if we are a good fit. I would then be able to provide a more exact bid. If the couple does not live locally such a meeting could be done over the telephone. The areas of photography that I do is a varied that the process is equally varied. Do, please just get in touch.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from Herriott Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland along with a variety of other trade qualifications. I continually strive to better myself come by reading and working through tutorials online that help me continually improve my post processing skills.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Interesting story! I REALLY wanted to be in a punk rock band but I soon recognised that I was too unmusical even for that! So I took up the camera as that would allow me to photograph the bands and hang out with all the cool people! I still love rock photography to this day.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with a very wide range of customers. I regularly do work for the Bellingham Herald particularly on their Dining Guide for which I do all the front cover and internal editorial photography. Other regular clients include Sustainable Connections, the Whatcom dispute resolution Centre and the Whatcom Humane Society. My main areas of work are weddings and real estate but I have also done many portrait shoots, children, commercial product shots and so on.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
In January of this year I traveled to Detroit and spent several memorable days photographing the blight on that city. This led to some amazing images of which I am very proud.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure you find out how long the photographer will be with you, what system does he or she use to allow you to view the images after the event, what prints are included and whether they will provide digital images and if so at what resolution. To see a lot more information about Phil Rose Photography and my services with relation to wedding shoots (the most complicated contracts I have to create) please take a look at this page.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I think the most important thing, particularly considering the way the Thumbtack appears to be going, is to think long and hard before hiring the cheapest person who approaches you. Photography more than most professions is suffering from the rapidly dropping prices of fairly high-end equipment. This allows anybody to simply by an $800 digital camera and present themselves as a professional photographer making bids at perhaps half of what I am able to offer with my 30 years of experience and approximately $15,000 worth of camera and lighting equipment. So my main piece of advice is that the client should decide whether their wedding or other shoot is worth more than the gamble of saving a few hundred dollars. I genuinely fear that this race to the bottom is leading to a lot of unhappy brides and grooms which makes me sad.
