Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

Do window installers work in the rain?

It is possible to install windows while it’s raining, and some professionals may perform the job in the rain. But keep in mind that if the rain is falling especially hard, it could cause moisture to enter the house. And, it’s not safe to work in strong winds or thunderstorms. Some technicians may also not install multi-story windows when it’s wet. Applying caulk can also become less effective if things are very wet.

How long does it take to install a window?

It can take less than an hour to install a new window in a house, and you might be able to install all your windows in less than a day. However, this is assuming ideal conditions and that the previous window is already removed. Factors that may add to this timeframe include larger or more complex windows like bay windows or sidelights, as well as windows being installed in hard-to-reach places.

How do I prepare my house for replacement windows?

To prepare your house for the installation of new replacement windows, start by clearing a path and the area around the window. Take down any window treatments like blinds or curtains, and cover your furniture to protect it from dust. And make sure the window replacement crew will have access to your house.

Before the window installation service arrives at your home, ask them if there are other preparation steps you should take.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

Installers and estimator are very friendly and honest. Liaan Glass installed a shower wall, three large windows, and a skylight this summer. So far, the work is holding up well. Decent price and installation time. The administration can be a little disorganized.

I needed my ancient fogged up sliding glass door and my drafty loud window replaced. I called Liaan Glass and Esi was out to give me a free estimate the next day. I had interviewed several window and glass installation places and many of them talked down to me when I said that I was interested in reducing noise. Being a single mom, I really don’t like being talked down to and I don’t like feeling as though I’m talking to a salesman. I’m happy to report that my experience with Liaan Glass was top notch. I hired them on the spot and waited for my window and door to come in. On installation day, Esi did a phenomenal job on both my window and sliding glass door. He reassured me that the noise reduction would be significant and showed me everything he was doing along the way. Once everything was installed, he cleaned my new windows and took any tools/ debris with him. I’m so pleased with my new window and door!! Sound is down significantly and no more drafts! The sliding glass door is beautiful and no more weepy metal door. I’ll hire Esi and Liaan Glass for any window replacement needs!

Had a great experience working with Reza from ACE Glass. It was my first window replacement project so was not sure what to expect. Reza was very professional, polite, and responsive. The installations went without a hitch and the final product looks nice and so far is keeping the outer elements at bay much better than its predecessor. I would definitely recommend ACE Glass if you are looking for a window replacement.

Ken and the guys from Clear Choice were fantastic. They redid windows in our entire house and they were fast, professional, and did a great job. We were worried because our basement windows had their frames rotten away, but the guys did a great job rebuilding he frame and didn't charge anything extra. I would highly recommend working with them if you are considering installing windows. They are very friendly and easy to work with. They were very clear and thorough with questions and got the job done quickly. We would hire them again for sure

Good Guy windows offered great value for the service provided and has been pleasant to deal with every step of the way. We are remodeling our fixer-upper home's windows in phases and they were very helpful in giving us individual window quotes from the beginning so that we could plan our budget. Damien, our sales guy, was no nonsense and not at all high pressure. They simply had the bed value for the money so there was no need to sales tactics involving talking down competitors. The installers were timely, efficient, friendly, and considerate, laying down tarps across walking areas. We had some kinks and slow responses along the way. They are a smaller operation so do not always have the processes in place to operate as a well oiled machine, but we cannot complain too much because in the end we did get everything we asked for and more. We have gone through two phases of window installs and plan to stick with Good Guys throughout our remodeling adventure.

I had two bed room windows replaced. I found them very responsive, time line was as described, and it was all hassle free! The only thing is price. I was quoted a range from another installed for $450_$550 per window and Good Guys was at the top of the range. I should have gotten more direct quotes but was on a time line due to a roommate moving in. Overall I would definitely recommend this company, but do price comparisons first.

My house had 3 old aluminum windows that needed to be replaced badly (drafty, condensation, ugly...). Jason came by promptly to take a look at the project. He gave me a very thorough explanation about why we were having issues with these windows and what we could do to fix it. He listened to my needs and gave me several options that fit within budget. We chose to replace the 3 windows with one large picture window with two sliders. The window was custom made in a very reasonable time frame and the installers did a FANTASTIC job. It looks amazing and the room feels much warmer. We did have one minor hiccup during the process (but what home project doesn't have one?), but I can honestly say that Jason went above and beyond to make it right. I would definitely recommend and hire Northwest Energy Shield again if I have the chance!
