Al is fantastic! He has been tutoring both my son and daughter in high school math (Algebra 3/Trig) . Their confidence increased after their first session with Allen. He is knowledgeable, patient, and personable. My son -- once reluctant to see a tutor, now looks forward to his weekly session and most notable, they both passed their most recent math tests. Yeah!!! I highly recommend Al's Math Tutoring.

CML tutored our high school freshman this fall for about two months. He provided helpful advice on how to approach high school work (study skills, tackling big textbooks, time management) as well as specific, excellent feedback on essay writing and math, and AP test prep. He's very patient, approachable, and has a good sense of humor and he and my son have a great rapport. He was also very flexible and worked around our busy schedule. We highly recommend him.

Grant has been working with my boys for only two months and I am very impressed with how much they have already benefited from what he has taught them. Thanks to Grant's help, my younger boy is doing much better in math and due to the study skills Grant has been teaching him, he takes less time than before to complete all his homework. My older boy has been so encouraged by Grant's help with improving his writing skills that he has decided to work with him on SAT prep for the test in spring. Both boys enjoy working with Grant and look forward to their tutoring sessions with him. He always brings a sense of fun to the learning process.

Judy has sincerely helped me to retake the ACT for access to a $10,000 scholarship to my top choice college. She gave me incredibly helpful tips, tricks, and strategies that prepared me really well to take the test. I am not very good with Math, and she helped me more than my math teachers did in a month preparing for the ACT retake. She did a really good job helping me out over the phone and through FaceTime. I've even gotten better test scores at school applying what I learned from Judy into school tests for my classes. Big thanks to Judy for all of her help!

Jen is absolutely amazing! She worked with my 8th grader who'd fallen behind in math and struggled with some of the new concepts. At the end of Christmas break his grade was a D after 2 failed tests. After working with jen for just two sessions he had raised his test scores to a high C. After 2 months of working with jen one hour a week, my son now has a solid A in math! She's amazing. It's totally boosted his confidence so much. She also worked with my twin daughters who are in 4th grade and have been struggelung in reading and math for the past 2 years. After working for 3 months with Jen they are at grade level in both subjects. She's great at explaining the subjects in a kind way that is very encouraging and empowers kids to learn and WANT to learn. LOVE HER!

Ms. Nguyet has been a great teacher to our children. Although our daughter was struggling with 4th grade math before, she did well on the recent 5th grade standardized test and is currently enrolled in an advanced math class. Ms. Nguyet knows what your children need to work on, based on your children's needs or goals, and makes sure those needs/goals will be met eventually through hard work. She is also very supportive, patient and highly experienced with teaching a wide variety of children, not only in mathematics but also basic science, chemistry, physics and reading.

Ethan is a great tutor to my 8th grade son. He prepared my son for ACT and SAT tests. Thanks to Ethan, my son got good scores on these tests and was accepted by talented searches like TiP Duke, CTY John Hopkins and Robinson UW. Ethan also provided general consulting about school classes that he recommends to take, interesting magazines and articles. My son started to read Wired and other magazines after Ethan motivated him. Also, Ethan is very responsive and flexible with schedule. His unique benefit that he comes to your place, so you don't need to drive your kiddo anywhere. I highly recommend Ethan for tutoring for SAT/ACT tests, high school prep, math.

Derek was able to coordinate an organized study regimen comparable to that of an SAT course that students would pay hundreds of dollars for, and the schedule was flexible. He taught in small groups as well as one-on-one sessions. When studying under Derek, I felt like I was in an actual classroom, which included quizzes and test periods. However, I looked forward to each session because even if I failed, I knew I would be learning something new. The environment was engaging but calm so I didn't feel stressed out. He was very articulate and explained concepts in a way that I could understand. I felt free to ask any question due to his never-ending patience, and he was always able to answer me. Derek provided copious amounts of supplemental resources to further enhance my SAT-skills. He was able to point out recurring themes and helpful tips in each SAT section, which I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. With his tutoring, I was accepted into every UC that I applied for. I owe much of my admission success to Derek's SAT prep course and am forever thankful. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Mark Brown for tutoring. We were referred to Mark Brown when my daughter was a junior in high school. He helped my daughter to become an organized writer, helped her prepare for her SAT'S and I am proud to say she was accepted to all 4 of the universities she applied to. My daughter currently attends the UW and I credit Mark in not only helping her boost her testing skills but her academic confidence as well.

Studying for the SAT can be quite the ordeal, with so many textbooks and websites out there it can be difficult to find the "right way" to study. Through Brandon's SAT coaching, he provided me with many useful pointers on both general SAT taking skills and specific sections I was having difficulty with. In my one hour study session, I felt as if I had learned more useful information than in weeks of studying traditional preparatory books. My only regret is that I did not realize the importance of receiving such advice until mere weeks before the test, relearning how to take a test in a short period of time can be difficult. Even with such a short time, Brandon's guidance helped me achieve far greater success than would have otherwise been possible. I would highly recommend Brandon's services to anyone looking to do well on the SAT.

Carrie was excellent and tailoring my tutoring experience to my needs. I appreciated that she knew the format of the SAT very well and taught to the test. She helped me reach a score of 1540 when I had scored a 1470 on my previous test!

I offer low-cost 4 and 1/4 evening of math renewal that includes pre-algebra and algebra six times per year. Skype tutorials beyond that are available also. I am a nationally known math learning specialist with four books published. I also teach an expert GRE preparation class in three 4 and 1/4-hour sessions. It's been a Seattle favorite for over 24 years. My course covers the three test sections and is highly successful in raising scores in all of them, including verbal, math and critical writing. See several testimonials and more details about content on the site. Don't let the affordable fees imply spotty quality. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

      What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

      • English
      • Science understanding and reasoning
      • Math
      • Reading
      • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.
