FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing system is not complicated. I price by the square foot and it depends on what the project will be - standard painting, wall paper, faux finish, bas relief, etc. What will be applied to the walls, ceiling or floor determines what price will be and the best way to figure out a budget for a project is to get a free estimate. I honor my estimate only changing them for two reasons. The first reason is materials and supplies have increase and I must pass this on to clients. The second reason is something was hidden during the estimate process and to repair/replace or re-do will be extra via an approved change order; an example would be finding mold or mildew behind something that had to be removed to do the painting - this would have to be addressed immediately as it is a health issue. There is a third reason to increase costs and that is the customer changes the project, adding to what I will be doing. Once I have estimated the job, I will be happy to go over costs with my clients and explain where I got my figures. One area most clients forget about is making sure they have funds available for taxes! They forget they will have to pay taxes on any project and fail to figure that cost into their budget. It can adversely affect their budget and make them run over it.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I take magazines on painting and am continually experimenting on sample boards to find new techniques and methods of doing things. I find this is the best education; I am a very hands on person and learn more quickly when I can get my hands on the materials. In this industry, painters and other contractors, are always exchanging information on how to do things, what products are the best to use and what we can do to offer a great job at lower prices.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
An uncle started me in his business and I went out on my own once I learned the basics of painting. I continued my education through trial and error, reading many books on decorating and the history of painting. I also picked the minds of older painters. While I hate the paperwork; I take pride in my skills and enjoy giving my clients the look they wanted in their home.
