Hired on Thumbtack
We hired Home Run Roofing through Thumbtack last January to reroof our home. Brandon came out within a couple of hours of our request, which initially impressed us. Unfortunately, that was where the positives ended. From the beginning, there was a lot of talk and very little follow-through.
The day the roofing crew initiated work, our heater stopped working. When we contacted our HVAC repair technician, we learned the roofing crew had tarped over the exhaust vent, which caused carbon monoxide to back up triggering the furnace to shut down. This was extremely dangerous, and something any roofing crew should be aware of. Following this incident, we asked to see photos of their previous work. The photos we were shown turned out to be fake.
We had contracted them to install skylights, which turned out to be a major mistake. The crew clearly had never done this before. They miss cut several times, messed up our interior wallboard, framed the skylights incorrectly; and flashed them improperly. Anything beyond basic roofing was handled extremely poorly, gutters were wrecked, materials purchased with our money were left out in the rain, no expansion joints were used, they totally failed to put underlayment in multiple places, and more than a dozen nails have already popped through.
At some point, we discovered the team was not licensed or insured in the state of Washington. After a serious conversation with Brandon, he suggested that his uncle take over the job. We were hopeful this would improve the situation, but it did not. The moment we paid them, even when the work hadn't been totally finished (big mistake on our end), they were gone. A year later, the job is still unfinished. As soon as the fall rains began, the skylights started leaking severely. Despite repeated attempts to contact them, we later learned that many of the crew had been deported for being in the country illegally. We also discovered multiple lawsuits against the uncle’s company, including one from REI, which will likely consume their entire bond.
We are now out of significant money and time, and experienced a great deal of frustration to show for it. A separate roofing inspector has since told us the work was done so poorly that he recommends a complete reroof.
My advice: do not get involved with this company or any associated parties. It simply is not worth the risk.
Details: Flashing needs to be repaired or replaced • Entire portions of roof need to be repaired • Two-story building • 0 - 10 years old • Asphalt shingles • No, the project is not covered by an insurance claim • Residential
