Jarrod worked on adjusting the loose hinge in our bathroom glass door and he installed a new glass panel for another bathroom. His work was pretty solid. Jarrod was very good and thorough in his follow-ups from the beginning to the end. He kept his time and his estimates were very close to the final amount. I would strongly recommend him. (In fact I have already given his contact to my friend who wanted some help.)

Corey is OUTSTANDING... This is the second project he has tackled for me and I am almost speechless by his impeccable work. That is saying a lot, since I am one picky who has been called (very tough to work for) before... He Arrives On Time, ALWAYS no questions asked. If you need work done on the weekend, he comes then as well. He is Very honest. I can leave my keys with him go to work and come home. He works hard above anything else, and boy does he do a good job. He works incredibly fast. He has a great personality, very funny, smart, and loves cookies :) He is, simply put, the best of the best in this business... Corey no longer is just a painter, or a handyman, he is someone I could call a friend.

Dennis was terrific, he installed our garbage disposal (within a really tight space), even though it took a couple of trips to get the correct parts. Fantastic value, and he was prompt and thorough. Will definitely use him again for our handyman projects.

Gordy was exceptional! He removed a 150 foot long fence and hauled it away in less than a days work. His communication and professionalism were excellent and his price was fair. I also appreciate him telling us what he can and cannot do, I know I can call him for our next project and he'll only accept what he knows is in his skill set. I'm very grateful to have him in my corner. I'm abundantly grateful and you will love working with him.

I highly recommend the services of Enrique. When he says no job is too small, he really means it. He drove quite some distance to my house to give an estimate for a suspected water leak. He detected where the problem was within a few seconds and recommended how to fix it. He even inspected our crawl space because we told him that we feared that there might be some water there. I would definitely call him for any handyman services that we need. He is honest, diligent and very knowledgeable about his work.

"If I could give more than five stars I would. Jose was prompt, friendly, smart, and reliable. He’s the sort of handyman you can explain your project to, he’ll ask thoughtful questions, and then you can leave and he’ll do it. And if something unforeseen happens, he knows how to make it work. He went out of his way to make sure everything is right. For example, we had a large piece of our wall damaged by previous workers. As Jose’s helper was repairing it, he felt air coming out of the hole. Silly me, I sort of dismissed it as air coming from outside. But Jose realized it was air from our heat pump being misrouted into the wall instead of the floor vent where it belonged. He tracked it down and found that one of our ducts had been disconnected. And he fixed it. Incredible. You can just tell he totally gets it, that your project is in good hands, and he’ll take care of anything that may pop up in the meantime. I will recommend Jose to anyone looking for a handyman.

Art is hands down the best plumber/handyman I have ever worked with. He completely remodeled two bathrooms in my home, and they look absolutely beautiful! He was in constant communication with me, and took way less time to complete the work as I had anticipated. His rates are very reasonable, and the quality of his work was excellent. He also has a team of people whom he works with, that were also just as professional and hard working as he was. I would HIGHLY recommend Art for any plumbing, or handy man services that you would need. He can do it ALL! I will definitely be calling him for all future projects in my home.

He did a fantastic job cleaning the mess of my house even though I asked him super last minute! I am really pleased with his depth of cleaning and I don't think that I could have found better. I would definitely hire him again if needed in the future. Everything was deeply cleaned with no short cuts taken.

Chris and Joey did an incredible job on two of my bedrooms. I recently bought a 106-year-old house that hasn't been maintained much in the last 20 years. Two of the rooms had only wallpaper, and behind that was tongue-in-groove board. They came up with a creative solution for drywalling the rooms. Now the two rooms are ready to be lived in. The drywall job looks fantastic, the walls are smooth and there aren't any imperfections or anything. I will definitely hire them again in the future. I highly recommend them.

David responded in very timely manner to our enquiries for a handyman and did a great job fashioning from scratch, a pair of cedar screen doors for our century old cabin. He is working on sanding and resealing several decks. One of which he said he plans to re-sand and reseal as "it was not up to his standards" even though it looked fine to me. We would certainly hire him for future maintenance/repair projects.

I contracted with Jesse to repair a bath and shower, both had leaked through tiles and there was extensive water damage on walls and floor in both bathrooms. I think Jesse and his team are great at carpentry and masonry, from prep to finish. The extensive water damage made it difficult to come up with an accurate quote, and in the end unforeseen damage in both bathrooms was repaired with additional updates for an additional fraction of the original estimate and with excellent workmanship! I think Jesse is fair, reasonable and has his customer’s interests in mind.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
