FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Yes. I am often reading articles, books, or anything else I can get my hands on to stay on top of the changes within my field. This includes going to a lot of seminars and continuing education classes. I am a lifelong learner and love every second of it!
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I survived a very difficult childhood and began soaking up all of the information I could about psychology and counseling. I began seeing my first counselor when I was 16 and it was an awful experience, but either because I'm stubborn or just plain foolish, I kept going back, determined to find hope and a counselor that would care for me when I couldn't care for myself. I also continued to learn from my friends that I was different than them, I was able to sit in the yuck and messiness of life with someone far longer than a 'normal' person could. I suppose I always knew I wanted to help people, to hear their stories, and to walk with them as they traversed the difficulties of life. I've been on this journey for my entire life, but it wasn't a conscious decision until I was fifteen.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Find someone who you genuinely enjoy being with. If you don't like your therapist, counselor, or coach, then you won't take the work seriously and it will become a chore. While your therapist is not your friend, you should enjoy their company and respect them. Finding a therapist is just as much about finding a personality fit than it is finding someone with the expertise you are looking for.
