I would highly recommend Scott Bemis for math tutoring, he is very passonite works exceptionally hard at his job. He is responsive and will get back to you within a day, not to mention he is also extremely flexible with scheduling. He's a very patient instructor and always makes sure I understand the content fully. Without him I do not think I would have the math grade I do today.Nov 17, 2020Scott Bemis Tutoring's reply
Thank you so much, Emily! I really enjoy working with you each week, and I am so happy to see the progress you have made in your precalculus class.
Several of our children have worked with Scott in various math subjects over the years from normal, every day assignments to occasional tutoring for college courses (while they are still in high school). We began working with him when our children were in middle school and now some have graduated and others are about to graduate. I can recommend him without hesitation for math at multiple levels. He is kind, patient, dedicated, punctual, and responsive. I wish I could give him more than 5 stars!Nov 16, 2020Scott Bemis Tutoring's reply
Thank you so much, Bonnie! It has been a pleasure working with your family, and it has been wonderful to see your children develop their math and problem solving skills over the years.
Thanks to Scott, our 11 year old daughter was well prepared for 2 very challenging exams, which she passed with flying colors. She will also be well prepared for middle school thanks to the math review. He was always punctual and professional. Scott is terrific!Sep 10, 2015Verified
My middle-school son has worked with Scott in both small-group and individual math sessions for the last 6 months. We have been thoroughly impressed by Scott's dedication, diligence and thoughtfulness. Over the course of his meetings with Scott, my son has covered material ranging from pre-algebra to foundational physics. Yet Scott never sacrifices thoroughness for speed. He assigns rigorous weekly homework and works with our family to maximize learning and minimize stress; every worksheet has a clear purpose, which Scott reinforces through the meticulous corrections he sends my son before each session. Even in a quick check-in with me via phone, Scott's genuine passion for mathematics and physics shines through. It's a mark of his skill as a teacher that he is not only able to demonstrate his own enthusiasm but also able to inspire and instill a love for math in his students. We are so thankful to work with Scott, especially in this time of remote learning and isolation.Nov 23, 2020Scott Bemis Tutoring's reply
To Minnie: Thank you so much, Minnie! It is a pleasure working with your son. It has been wonderful to see how he has mastered so many concepts ranging from pre-algebra through calculus and physics in such a short time (and at such a young age). His curiosity, perseverance, and work ethic are truly inspiring and will take him far in life.
I have been taking jazz piano lessons from Scott Bemis Tutoring for the past 1.5 years. I have made great improvements in that time due to Scott's teaching. He is very engaging and always makes sure that I understand a certain topic or concept. In addition, the materials that he supplies have been invaluable in learning the skills needed for jazz piano. I highly recommend Scott Bemis for tutoring!Oct 4, 2020Scott Bemis Tutoring's reply
Thank you, Tommy! I really enjoy working with you! It has been a joy to see how you started a year and a half ago learning the basics of jazz and are now able to play solo piano in several styles and also play as a member of the rhythm section at jam sessions.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? When a new student contacts me, I always begin by asking if we can set up a time to chat on the phone about the student's learning goals and learning style. This helps me get to know the student a little better and gives me an opportunity to learn about what they are currently working on in school so I can make sure my first lesson caters exactly to what they need to learn. If they know what they would like to work on, I also ask them to send me a copy of the homework or test they would like to go over in the first session so that I can choose what other materials (textbooks, etc.) to bring to the first session. In the initial phone call, we also find a good time to meet for the first session and discuss the student's schedule in general so I am able to set up regular sessions for them in my calendar.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have tutored for over ten years and absolutely love my job! I have helped my friends and fellow classmates with their homework and studying for tests throughout my entire education, and began tutoring professionally at the end of high school, continuing through college and after college. I have taught English as a second language to middle schoolers and high schoolers in Poitiers, France for an entire academic year, creating lesson plans, leading discussions, and handling classroom dynamics. I also worked with the other English teachers and discussed ways of engaging students and the expectations they as teachers had for their students. Additionally, I have learned a lot from my mom (a middle school and high school French and Spanish teacher), my French grandmother (a former French teacher at Willamette University), my grandfather (a high school teacher of various subjects), my grandmother (a high school teacher of various subjects), and my uncle (a history teacher). I love discussing education with them and with several friends of mine who are high school and college teachers, and I enjoy learning new ways to improve in my craft and become a more effective teacher.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?Ever since I was a kid, I have always enjoyed explaining things to people. I enjoy the art of catering each explanation to that person's specific strengths while making sure that I am filling in any gaps in that person's knowledge we find along the way. When a concept finally clicks for someone, that is the best feeling ever! I especially like encouraging people who feel that math (or other subjects) are unattainable for them. Despite what some people tell you it is my belief (and it has been my experience tutoring for over a decade) that just about everyone is capable of doing math. Learning any new subject that doesn't come naturally takes hard work, practice, and patience, and perseverance in spite of challenges, and these are all invaluable life skills as well.
