FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I don't really care to drive, so I change my pricing depending on how far I have to go, or require that the sessions be two hours or longer. My basic rate is $50 an hour. There is some down time during tutoring, when they're working on a problem I've given them, so my preferred way to work is to work with two students simultaneously. I charge $60 for that, and each student gets 90% of what they'd have got on their own.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Some students and families know exactly what they want to focus on, e.g. ("I don't get the quadratic formula."), in which case I focus on the problem they've identified. Sometimes they're dead on, but other times I recognize that there are precursor ideas that aren't fully understood that are leading to the problem they've identified, and I will work backwards to those. Other times, a student will simply want to improve in general, perhaps in a particular class, or for a particular test. In this case I give a bit of a pre-test to see what ideas they understand and which they don't and then go from there.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've worked with middle & high-school math students since I was one 33 years ago, and have worked with elementary students for the past 11 years.
