I’m Alan Lynch, a professional piano technician with over 12 years of experience as a field technician and rebuilder. For the past 3 years, I’ve worked in Seattle as the lead technician for a nationally recognized piano service company. I’m currently the piano technician for Cornish College of the Arts and Bellevue College, trusted to care for their performance and teaching instruments. TLDR: hire Alan to tune your piano! :) Alan tuned my almost-30-year-old Yamaha baby grand hadn’t been tuned in…I honestly don’t know how long. First off he was very respectful, communicative, and timely with scheduling and arrival. I wasn’t sure what to expect but he walked me through his process before he began, was extremely thorough, and even provided me a report afterwards showing where each key had started (on average, 1/3 pitch below where they should have been, yikes!) and ended. He explained what it meant if there were any oddities in the report and even fixed my sticky soft pedal. Alan played it after briefly to show me the difference in sound and when I played on it later, it maintained the sound beautifully. He is priced below a lot of other tuners but that is more indicative of his current attempt to grow his business - *not* reflective of quality of service, his results are definitely worth a lot more than he charges. I can say with confidence I’ll continue using him for my piano’s tuning needs in the future!

Alan tuned a piano that hadn't been tuned in 35 years. There was a broken string that required replacement and two strings that needed to be moved as they were improperly strung by a former tuner. Alan always communicated before arriving and showed all the work he was doing on the piano. He was very willing to discuss any aspects of the piano.

Absolutely thrilled with Alan’s work! Alan was timely and professional as well as willing to answer my questions and educate me on the inner workings and mechanics of my piano. You can really tell that not only is Alan capable and knowledgeable but he’s also passionate in his craft. I was a little worried the piano might need a little extra work since it was untouched for quite some time, but Alan finely tuned it to its former glory in a timely manner. I couldn’t be more pleased!

Alan did a fine job tuning my piano. It was so badly flat, he actually tuned the keyboard twice during the one session to get it up to tune. The charge was the same original quote. Alan went above and beyond!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I discount tunings for bi-annual or quarterly tunings. In Seattle, it’s ideal to tune twice a year!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I always start with a thorough evaluation of the piano and get to know the needs of the customer. I always give advice that I myself would follow, whether it’s service recommendations, humidity recommendations, or rebuilding/replacement options.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I’m a Piano Technicians Guild member and have attended 4 National conventions (and counting!). Keeping on top of your profession is essential, as is an always-learning attitude. I’m a certified PianoDisc Installer, PianoLifeSaver certified installer, and have attended Chuck Behm’s small shop academy twice, focusing in both upright and grand piano rebuilding. I’m a graduate of the Randy Potter School of Piano Technology.
