- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I always start the lessons I teach with stretches, vocal warm ups, and technique exercises. In a new student's very first lesson this is extra important because it will help me get an accurate view of your range and current comfort and abilities with singing. Secondly, we will talk! I need to know what your goals are for voice lessons so that I can curate an experience catered specifically to your needs and what you'd like to learn most. It is very important to be fully warmed up vocally before working on songs for performance so that you never over-tire or injure your voice. I like to ensure that my students have a very solid repertoire of warm-ups to use at home, and so we practice them in our lessons for the first few minutes each time as well. I also believe that warm-ups serve as very helpful technical learning and growth that can be accomplished outside of rehearsing performance pieces. The majority of the lesson after vocal warmups and exercises is spent on learning the pieces of music that fit your voice best, that you are most interested in, and that you might want to perform or audition with if you're moving in that direction.
