Jeff and his wife are outstanding workers. They arrived on time and worked nonstop to ensure that what I wanted completed was done exquisitely. They dug out sod in my front yard to make a place for my grandchildren and me to make another colorful haven for our yard. They moved the sod to the other side of my back fence to fill in where they're were bare spots. I will definitely call Jeff again when I have more projects to be completed. My home is looking more beautiful every day! Thank you so much Jeff! You are the best! Outstanding workmanship!

The project we had Christian do was a very large paint job along with changing some light fixtures and putting on some gutter guards. There were a few delays but they managed to get it all done. I would have liked if Christian would have been on the job site a little more, but considering he was able to fit us in between jobs we understood the circumstances. On a couple of occasions his staff was not clear on the instructions and had to redo a few areas, but they were very friendly and cooperative with what was asked. The paint job was done exceptionally well, however, I would probably not have them change any light fixtures. That was partly my fault as we should have hired an electrician for this not a painter. My husband was pleased with the gutter guards they installed and he did give us a 10 year guarantee on them. At the end of the project Christian came back to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction and that we were happy. He willing to do anything that did not meet our satisfaction. The only thing that made me unhappy was one day we stopped in and one of his workers was smoking in our garage. This is unacceptable, I called Christian and he did apologize for this. I would have given him five stars, but he lost a star for this smoking incident. We do have some projects that we want to do in spring and I am sure we will be giving Christian a call!

Jerome did an excellent job. We hired him to install an exhaust fan in our bathroom and several other small projects. He arrived on time and got right to work. He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the job, was very pleasant to work with and explained everything as he went along. The job was completed efficiently and without complaint. It was pretty cold outside (near zero that day) and Jerome had to make several trips into the attic and onto the roof. We had mentioned that we needed some electrical outlets on our porch and Jerome was able to take care of it. He even came back the next day and helped us with some wiring issues that we were having. I would not hesitate to recommend Jerome and I found his rates very reasonable. We plan to hire him again for future projects.

Adam did my fence this past October. Very well done and quickly had the yard fully enclosed so the dog won't escape! Kept me fully informed along the way. Thanks for the great work!

Norm built 3 park benches and 2 large picnic tables for our neighborhood park area. He was flexible and accommodating in meeting our installation requirements. Entire process from order placement to final delivery / installation took about 2 weeks, which we felt was very good turnaround time. All items were built to agreed-upon specifications. Thanks, Norm!

I had a very old wood garage that lead to more work then anticipated. Dave was willing to take on any of the challenges needed to get the job done. Including replacing old rotten boards, trim and the like. He then primed and painted the whole garage. Also changed out of date wiring and installed an outdoor light amongst a few other things. When it wasn't raining he was always here, even sometimes when it was raining. I'm very satisfied with the work he did and have a few more projects for him to take on in the future. His rates are quite reasonable and I'm glad that I hired him. I highly recommend him. Very nice guy and responsible.

John was very easy to work with. He and his crew did an excellent job, painting the complete interior of our newly purchased home. He gave special attention to the tin plate ceiling in the master bedroom, creating an accent for the antique light fixture that previously looked out of place. At his own expense, John took it upon himself to purchase and install new electrical plate covers that had been previously painted rather than refurbish the old ones. John's price was reasonable. We would not hesitate to hire John again

Where can I start? He designed, built and installed a corner spice rack in out kitchen in addition to fabricating a bracket to install our microwave and designed a wine rack to make it blend in with the existing cabinetry. He also hand-sanded and refinished our kitchen cabinets and installed new hardware on them. We now want him to design a bathroom shelving unit. All of these jobs took a day or two to complete. Verl is always timely and punctual and never left us waiting! He is always ready and willing to work around your schedules and is very trustworthy. We have no problem leaving the house while Verl is there working. The quality of his work is outstanding and he never leaves the house without cleaning everything up! We WILL be calling Verl again in the near future!

Mike was very professional and easy to work with. He was responsive to emails and calls and was always on time. He installed my new countertop, sink and faucet and it looks great! He also waited until after we painted and finished the job with the perfect caulk to match the new paint. I wouldn't hesitate to work with him again. Nice person, reasonable rates.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
