Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a cheap DJ?

To find a cheap or affordable DJ for your party or wedding, search for local DJs near you and ask for free cost estimates from several of them. While some DJ profiles may provide an automatically generated starting cost, it’s important to contact the DJ to get an idea of how much your particular request will cost. This also gives you the opportunity to ask them other important questions and make sure you are a good fit.

How do you book a DJ for a party?

To book a party DJ, start by comparing local pros in your area. Check out their ratings and reviews to find out:

  • Are they professional?
  • Do they show up on time to set up for the party?
  • Do they know how to feel the energy in the room and adjust the music accordingly?
  • Are they friendly to guests and take song requests?
  • Do they specialize in the genres you want (pop, Top 40, hip-hop, etc.)?
  • Do they have experience playing at your type of event (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)?

Whenever possible, watch videos of their performances.

Your last step is to contact three to five different DJs near you to ask them questions and get price quotes.

How much is a DJ?

When you hire a local DJ, expect to pay roughly between $300 and $800. But be aware that the actual price will vary based on several factors, including the length of the DJ’s set and how much of a presence they need to be. Larger venues can drive up the cost, as this requires more equipment, soundchecking and setup. Adding extras like confetti, fog, light shows and black lights also adds to the cost.

What questions should you ask wedding DJs?

To ensure you hire the best DJ for your wedding, ask these questions:

  • Are you available on my wedding date?
  • How much do you charge, and how do you set your prices?
  • What’s included in your rate (e.g., set up, clean up, etc.)?
  • How many weddings have you played at?
  • Do you have any references I can contact?
  • What kind of music do you specialize in?
  • Do you provide your own equipment, sound system, speakers, etc.?
  • Do you provide any other services (e.g., photo booth, lighting, etc.)?
  • Can guests request songs?
  • Will you accept a “Do Not Play” list?
  • How early would you arrive at the venue to set up?
  • Do you take breaks throughout the event? If so, how many and for how long?

Why do DJs ask how many guests are at the wedding?

It’s helpful to let your DJ know how many guests will be attending the wedding so they can ensure they have the right sound system and equipment. They may also ask more questions about your guests so they can ensure they have music that caters to the crowd.

If we could give 10 stars we would. Alton and SoundFire DJ were amazing! We loved that Alton would check in with us periodically to help us out with our wedding planning. We joked he was our "unofficial wedding planner". He was extremely professional and flexible. We are so happy that we were able to work with SoundFire DJ. We received numerous compliments from our guests as well. As far as we're concerned, there is no other DJ you need to look at! We already miss working with him. Thanks for everything Alton! Summary: in our opinion, our wedding was fantastic! Our guests had fun and enjoyed themselves but there's always room for improvement. I want to share our experience in order to help future couples seeking a DJ and to help Dawn with her service. See more detail below: Pre-Wedding -- Dawn and her husband Keith were early to our meeting and even drove to where it was convenient for us. They were very responsive and timely which made it easy! However, my wife and I spent a significant amount of time writing down on an Excel workbook-like sheet of paper that had many repeat questions and some that were confusing. That was a minor inconvenience for us but I think the song choice preferences sheet should be reorganized. Also, as "younger" people, we found it slightly inconvenient to have to pay by check and send it via mail for the initial deposit just because there are many apps out there that make the process easier (Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, etc.). Other than those things, the pre-wedding process was easy! Wedding -- We never needed to help Dawn and Keith with setup or anything like that which helped us a lot. They came in early to play some jazz/piano music during dinner so that was great. Because our guests ranged evenly from 12-70, playing music from different decades was essential. I think they did exactly that, however, I do remember feeling uneasy a couple times about the song choice. Also, the announcements about the dollar dance, prayer, and wedding party could have been more hyped (to gain more attention) or seamless. Those things didn't take away from the great time, though; They took requests all night and were flexible with what they played which was awesome. We had an amazing wedding, and the DJ contributed to that. Like I said before, constructive criticism is what helps improve businesses and helps others choose a service. I hope this review helps someone in the future make their DJ choice! Thanks for reading :) and thank you Dawn and Keith for your service! We wish you many blessings. - The Connelly's
