Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Movers were efficient, quick, and a pleasure to work with. We were moved in record time, our belongings were handled properly. We were very pleased with their work and would highly recommend them to anyone moving. If we ever need to move again we will be calling Pat's Movin and Haulin.

First off, I moved during the busiest week of the year, and hats off to Pat for rearranging schedules to make my move happen. It went well into the night, but his guys never gave up! Mike was an amazing "move captain" and Evan and Marshall certainly followed his lead. Mike packed the truck like it was a game of Tetris and everything fit perfectly. I've used other moving companies in the past, but Pat's is hands-down the best I've ever worked with! I travel for work, and as much as I hate moving, Pat will definitely be doing my next move (as long as I have "Mike & Crew")... I couldn't be happier and will absolutely recommend Pat's to everyone!! Thanks again for turning a nightmare move into a dream come true!! You have a customer for life! :)

The two men sent to do our move were very professional and very efficient. They got right to the job and stuck to it til done. They were considerate and careful of my furnishings. I would definitely recommend Dan's Movers again. In fact, I gave their name to a realtor who said they are always looking for good mover S to recommend to their clients. Thank you!

Movers were a little late getting to the appointment, but were very good about letting us know what was going on. We were able to get most of the truck unloaded with their help. I would recommend working with them if you need a mover.

We choose Pat's because of their responsible pricing - but we received far more than just a good value. Andy & Mike called when they were on their way, they arrived right on time & were quick and conscientious while loading & unloading their truck. Taking time to ensure everything was properly wrapped and protected. We had a short window to move in (with only an hour allotted for the elevator in a new construction apartment) and Andy & Mike hustled to get it done in time. Hard workers, courteous and friendly. Moving is rarely what you'd consider "fun" but if you need to move, hire Andy & Mike - they will help it all run smoothly. I highly recommend Pat's Movin & Haulin & especially Mike & Andy!

Reason I only gave 4 stars is the appointment was for 10 AM. Movers showed up at about 8:30 AM. I could have been gone since I wasn't expecting them then.

This was my second move with Muberr. This company is quite responsive. Both times I’ve hired them they’ve been on time and efficient. Pay in cash and you’ll get a small discount. I definitely recommend Muberr for their value and friendliness.

I did not use the actual service due to my moving day being changed last minute. They were very courteous in trying to arrange something with me and great with communication. They also charge $20 less per hour than the company I ended up with.

Just like a few other reviews, on moving day Paki was a no-show. Wouldn’t answer his phone. We had to scramble to find other movers that would help us out with no notice at all, on a Saturday. We ended up paying double what we intended to pay. Paki called six hours after he was scheduled to start saying that his vehicle had broken down that morning. Honestly, this was just an excuse. If your vehicle would have broken down, you could still answer the phone. I could’ve rented a truck. Your guys could’ve still done their job. I would recommend staying far, far, far away from this company. This behavior is unacceptable from a “professional“ company.

This is the best if the best. Please don’t let crazy per hour prices hook you. I saw one for $11 per hour before I hired Baker Moving. The $11 per hour just smelled like shit ton of hidden fees and would be more expensive in long run. Bakers prices per hour included everything, I mean everything. I was soo happy with the guys I went and increased their tip amount.

The crew that arrived from Pat's Movin' and Haulin' was efficient and courteous. They packed our belongings in a short amount of time and returned the following day to load it up and haul it over to our new house. Great team of workers. The only thing that could have been improved upon would have been to be better prepared with packing materials. We had to run out for some additional supplies but in the grand scheme of things, this was minor. We were moved in a timely matter with nothing lost or damaged.

The Highlights section only allows me to choose 3 out of the 5 options, but if I could've I would've selected all 5 (professionalism, value, work quality, responsiveness, and punctuality). I would however add to that list flexible (very much so in my case, which I cannot thank Paki and his crew enough for), friendly, understanding, communicative, and does his best to clarify what his customers are looking for so he can deliver the best service possible. I'm beyond grateful for Paki Brown (owner) and his team, for all reasons stated. He's hands-on-deck and personalizes each aspect of the services he provides. Best decision I made throughout this whole move!
