We received several bids on a repair and roofing job we needed done in a very short time-frame. Craig did a very indepth evaluation for what was needed and provided the estimate within 24hrs. He brought several things to our attention that the other bids did not address. We were able to schedule the job within a week of receiving the bid. He completed the work within the timeframe promised, He left the site cleaned each night and overall did an outstanding job. We feel we saved money and received quality. We would recommend Craig for your roofing needs!

I was very impressed with this company! I had different work done on both my homes over the last couple years. The first home had damage from a hail storm and I was required to get 3 estimates. I contacted Buckshot for an estimate and they came out that day. They were so helpful in working with my insurance company and getting several things covered that the inspector initially missed. They are very knowledgeable about claims and working with insurance. The insurance company took a while to settle the claim but my rep kept me updated on everything. They completed the roof and did some siding work, which turned out great!! On my second home I had some missing siding. They came out right away and were able to match the siding color even though the home is 13 years old. They took extra time to go through several sample colors and work with me on making sure I was satisfied with everything. The work was done right away and looks amazing! I would never use another company to do any exterior work on my home!!

Rick came a distance to give us an estimate and was able to tell us on the spot. He even gave us tips for some other house projects that we are doing on our own. His estimate and timeline was the most reasonable of all bids we got. He was able to start the project within two weeks. When he ran into an unanticipated electrical problem he spent the afternoon calling electricians until one could immediately come out. Everything was done in the time frame we were given. We are so happy with the end result. Would hire again.

I needed 4 doors hung in a basement reno I am completing on my own and I wanted them done correctly. Phil Connors was on time, communicative and did a good job hanging 4 pre-hung doors in the janky framing I put up. I will be bringing him back to do some custom shelf construction for a sit on top sink in a bathroom. He prefers not use telephone communication; he texts or emails, however, he responds to email quickly, within 24 hours. I would recommend Phil for your next carpentry project

Replace roof after storm, Lucas worked very well with both me and my insurance co. Lucas checked on his crew to make sure the job was done the way he and I wanted. l He went out of his way to make sure things such as cleanup were done to my expectations. We would recommend Sweet Exteriors and Construction,Inc. to everyone.

Once I contacted Zak of Progressive Painting about our interest in a painting project I got a quick response. It didn't take Zak long to come over and give us an estimate. There was one delay but he was quick to let us know and re-schedule for just a week later. The work and their attitude was very friendly and professional. And I couldn't have asked for anything better, very neat and complete workmanship. Bravo!

We had a very good experience with Shamrock. Danny got right back to me when I posted my need on Thumbtack. Originally I thought we just needed new ridge vents because we had bats in our attic and we knew we had at least one hole in our roof. He came down on a Sunday to check out the holes before it rained again and discovered that we had extensive hail damage and needed a whole new roof. He was very good at dealing with our insurance company, and answered all of our questions and returned our phone calls quickly. We had a two-man crew do our entire roof, and we feel that they were really an A+ team. They were polite, hardworking, and cleaned up the work area every day before they left. We are very pleased with our new roof and Shamrock Construction.

What separates our business from the rest is our personal service. All facets of your job are personally handled by the owner, so you only have to get to know 1 person vs 3-5. With this approach I can keep my overhead lower, and deliver you more value for your dollar. I have never tried to be the biggest company in town, just the most dependable. Carpentry is not our only limitation, I have a broad range of other services available. With 30 years of experience in the industry, there is not many projects I haven't tackled. However as the times dictate, occasionally we can bring in a sub contractor that would be a better choice for a particular job site task that I am not comfortable performing.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
