I feel very thankful that I found Rigo to do my projects, which I had long been dreaming about having done: I needed some sort of border to enclose my sloped rock garden, from which rocks were beginning to tumble out; and I needed stone paver walkways in my back yard from the porch to the fire pit, and from the fire pit to the shed. Rigo did an absolutely amazing job on both projects, and has a very pleasant and professional demeanor. I hadn't a clue how to fix the rock garden issue, and he took one look at it and immediately knew what to do. It turned out amazingly! The walkways are also gorgeous and have opened up my backyard to additional landscaping ideas for the future. And as an added bonus, he was also willing and able to remove some random junk I had laying around back there that I needed to get rid of (old benches, old fencing left by previous owner, etc). I'd recommend Driftless Drystone to anyone needing rock/stone work done!

Working with Fantasy Landscape and Design was a very pleasant experience. Tyler and his crew were very friendly, polite and professional. They worked above and beyond to create a great looking fence, and to do a few important extras for me. I'm looking forward to starting my new patio with Fantasy.

My five-star rating is for the variety of jobs done - all excellently - and all at a very reasonable cost. I got a great new wall, pruning, pad for garbage cans, landscape rock along the house, a huge shrub removed, and even a couple tree roots cut. Although the weather was a problem and caused many delays, Ron came through and accomplished all that he promised.

This is a multiple property arrangement for complete lawncare services. Jerry at RCPS quickly grasped the vision for restoring the properties landscape, crafted a proposal and plan for a multiple season restoration. Realistic, achievable and measurable goals were established and benchmark photos taken for mid and end of season review.

Tim is the hardest working landscape contractor I have ever had. He is fast, organized, knowledgeable and has a very diverse scope of work experience and tools to complete any outdoor project you might have. He not only completed the landscape needs, but also saw that I needed to have my gutters cleared and extensions on my downspouts. He also offered solutions to the flow of water runoff in front of my garage. Tim has earned my respect and I completely trust the work and recommendations he offers. He is a permanent contact for all my outdoor yard needs. I have decided to hire him for monthly maintenance.

I posted a review when we were still in the early stages of our project, and I wanted to follow up now that it is done. We are even happier than we were in the beginning! Aspen Garden and Landscape did excellent work designing and building a brick patio for my backyard. The owner Eric Jacobson was great to work with. In the design phase, Eric listened to my ideas for the space and made smart suggestions. My backyard gently slopes toward the house so he had the idea to build a small wall and garden area into the slope. It was a great design. In the build phase, Eric really put in the time to make sure everything came together the way that it was supposed to. As an added bonus, Eric did a great job improving the landscape. He picked plants that are easy to maintain and look great. He also worked in all of our "wishes" in a way that is harmonious with the design. This included a small vegetable garden area and re-using some of our existing plants. Cost was reasonable and transparent. Eric itemized his bid and his invoice so I knew exactly what I was paying for. My wife and I love the finished product. We get lots of compliments from friends and neighbors. We recommended Eric to several friends and they all report similarly great work. I highly recommend you consider Aspen Garden and Landscape if you are looking to do an outdoor project.

We use A+ for all the homes in our business. We are a caregiving agency that provides daily living assistance for our residents. Having a very good first impression at each site for residents, their visitors and their agency managers is very important. A+ does an excellent job and relieves our staff from duties that would take them away from their caregiving responsibilities. Their name reflects their graded performance.

His team just completed a very thorough yard cleanup and it looks great. I will definitely work with Acer again for future landscaping needs.

Tim was by far the most responsive out of all the companies I had come bid the re-grading of my yard and bury a drain for my sump pump. He was great at keeping me up to date on when he would be working and what he would be accomplishing on that day. I was checked with many times during the process to make sure that things were going the way I had envisioned them. Tim also came back a few weeks after the job was completed to make sure everything was going well and that the new grass he planted was growing in nice. Needless to say, if I need any landscaping in the future, Tim will be my first and only call.

Working with Craig and his crew was pleasurable and the finished landscaping was beautiful. Work was completed timely despite very hot and humid weather. Very friendly and approachable. If the work cost more than the original quote, Craig was willing to eat the cost for the extra materials. The only negative...there were some days were garbage was left laying around the work site and I felt it necessary to clean it up.

Joseph was great to work with! He kept us up to date on how the progress was going on the project. We ended up having some ran in the middle of the project so he also made sure to communicate what his next steps were along with when he was going to complete the project. His price estimate was very close to the final cost and reasonable.

It was very easy to schedule a consultation through Thumbtack. Jeff came to my house within the week at a time that was convenient for me. He is an experienced landscape designer, which is what I was looking for since I prefer to do projects myself and on a budget. He can do CAD plans or a photoshop mock up of the design and those options were affordable. He can also do the work if you're not the do it yourself type. I have never hired a landscape professional and thought my project would be too small for anyone to be interested but he was interested and very helpful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
