Went above and beyond his duties. I had some fallen tree branches and a chainsaw that I didn't know how to operate and this kind hearted gentleman took the time to cut them up for me before he cut my lawn!! He ALWAYS accommodates my schedule for me and does those little extra things that make him so special!!

Hugo and his crew have been a pleasure to work with. He has been prompt with all communications and was willing to work with us on options to meet our goals on price and projects. He weeded a substantial amount of our beds and overflow, trimmed trees (and even advised against trimming certain fruit trees until later in the season to preserve the vitality of the tree) and installed mulch. We are also using his crew to cut our lawn weekly. I am so glad to be working with Hugo and will be recommending him to anyone looking for lawn services.

I had Balickis plant several arborvitae trees in my backyard. The install was done quickly with great quality trees used. The company provided input on the tree layout design which made the process extremely easy.

Working with David and Fabian was wonderful! They made our yard look beautiful! All of our neighbors have stopped by to let us know how great it looks. They worked within our budget and solved our problems! They removed unwanted trees, weeds, regraded, planted large trees, shrubs, perennials, edged, mulched. We are so happy with their work that we hope to continue using them for our yard maintenance!!

This business was fast and efficient. He was also insured so we didn't have to worry about that. They took down two pine trees and cleaned everything up very well. It was all done in one day. They even cut a bunch of the the tree logs into smaller pieces so we could use them for firewood-an extra service they did not have to take their time doing for us. We definitely recommend this business!

These guys are the hardest working landscapers I’ve employed. They know what they’re doing, they don’t rush things and they do a very good job. So far they have completed the Spring cleanup, edges about 1/2 acre of trees and flowerbeds, as well as deliver & install some high quality mulch.

Wes was outstanding. He cut down 2 trees, trimmed another tree and took out all of the evergreens in front of our house. The clean up was thorough. The whole job was completed in 2 hours which was unbelievable. Wes came early and was eager to get started. The quality of work was awesome and far exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend Wes for any type of tree cutting and trimming.

Top notch, professional, and knowledgeable. Gave excellent recommendations regarding thinning the property to allow for healthy growth of existing foliage, increased light exposure all while keeping the health of the trees in mind. I've had a natural wooded lot for 20 years and worked with numerous tree services; definately keeping their number. By far one of the best. Would highly recommend. Thanks guys. Randy.

We had part of a tree snap off. We needed the rest of the tree removed. Quentin changed his schedule to start last Sunday. Got most of the tree down, came back Sunday finish cutting down the tree in the cold. Even through Quentin was having family concerns he still found the time to finish the job. I would recommend 1/2 price tree for there tree work.the job took 1 week to complete.

Extremely pleased overall. Besides being very skilled he was also very acommodating and understanding as to my lack of knowledge with regards to the tree in our backyard. Facilitated lots of info and advice as to getting the most of the tree and its remaining life span which will benefit us tremendously. Will recommend his services to others. Ruben Burgos

Bardos did a huge project for us - we extended our paver patio and also put a 5 foot high, 60 foot long retaining wall at the back of our property. The retaining wall was set ten feet from the existing rail road tie wall- he removed that and then filled the entire 60 foot x 10 foot area with soil to 5 feet high. We have a fence in the back so he moved all the stone and soil by wheelbarrow from the front yard and then through a gate. I am extremely impressed with not only the quality of work, but his professionalism and work ethic. It turned out better than I could have imagined, I am so impressed! You can tell he takes pride in his work and a job well done. He never had a problem with changes or add-ons that we requested (he moved and modified an existing sump pump pipe, cut down a tree, etc). Not only that, he was reasonably priced. I highly recommend him for any landscaping or hardscaping job!

I will definitely hire Haas Tree Service again. The crew, led by Matt, did a terrific job removing some small trees, pruning others, and cutting back large overgrown hedges. The front of the house basically looks transformed. The back yard was becoming a jungle. Not anymore. They also took care to do a thorough cleanup job—not a twig was left behind. Very satisfied with the professionalism and good cheer of these guys. Highly recommend.

Giving four stars because they were the only ones to give me a quote and they were able to come out quickly and the majority of my lawn does look nice. However, a very light table and a sport net were not moved so they simply mowed around them. I also have a very large soccer net that was understandably not moved but it was even trimmed around. I was home and could have moved them myself if asked. They also completely missed mowing under one of the trees so a whole section went unmowed. Trimming was included in my quote but I don't see evidence that it was done. Please, for the next client, if they are home, have them move things if you need and please more attention to detail. This job just seemed sort of rushed. Thank you for being able to come out with short notice.

Excellent work! They scheduled me for spring cleaning the day after giving me an estimate and did a very thorough job, even trimming the trees. The yard looks great! Regular lawn moving includes edging. I'm very happy with the work, the promptness, and the value.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
