Dennis really met all of our needs for a very reasonable price. He was flexible, fun to work with, professional, and creative. He accommodated all of our requests both in the engagement session and at the wedding, and he used his own creativity to get some really cool artistic shots. We couldn't be happier with the photos and how they turned out. Everyone who has seen them is really impressed and many have asked who our photographer was! Not only were we impressed with the photography itself, we were also impressed with the timeliness of the photos. We have heard from others that their wedding photographers took months to get their photos back after the wedding, but Dennis got ours back to us in less than 2 weeks! And we get to keep all our photos on a flashdrive with a release to print them wherever we choose. This was really important to us, and it was included in the price. Overall, we're really happy with how everything turned out and we are glad we chose Dennis to be our photographer!

I had 5 photographers to choose from and selected Sage Arts because of his previous work (found on his website). Anthony is professional and listened to my needs. The photo's turned out well and he charged me what he said he would. This was my first time hiring a professional photographer and next time I will ask more questions.

We hired Garret for our wedding a few weeks ago and we could not have been more pleased! From scoping out the venue before the big day to coming to the rehearsal to hanging out in the 100 degree heat with us all day, Garret went above and beyond to make sure he captured as much of the day as he could, including the small details. I specifically requested that he mingle and interview guests throughout the day and mingle he did! I got so many compliments on how friendly and professional the videographer was and some even thought he was family! We got our highlight video back in about two weeks and I have watched it at least once a day since, (usually more!). It is BEAUTIFUL and he even made a small edit to it upon my request. I am still in awe at how perfectly he managed to encompass everything our day was about in a 7 minute video. Hiring a videographer was something that we did not budget for when planning the wedding but Garret is so reasonably priced and I am so glad that we were able to pull the funds together and make it happen because it was absolutely worth every penny! I am so grateful to have these memories preserved so perfectly and beautifully thanks to Garret:)

Jim is super easy to work with.... very nice, professional and flexible! His work products are great.... he provided a lot more options than most other photographers. Turnaround time was excellent; proofs were sent to me less than a day later. I would definitely use him again and I highly recommend him to others. Thanks Jim, for this painless process.

Melissa did an amazing job at our wedding! She had great ideas for the pictures, and was so professional and friendly. From our first conversation to the end of the wedding, it was absolute pleasure to work with her. I have been in many of my friends' and family's weddings, she far surpassed any of the previous photographers l have worked with. We are so glad we found her!

Loved working with these guys! Darren always responded to my emails in a decent amount of time, no matter how ridiculous my question was. Darren showed up and took great pictures of our wedding. The pictures look amazing and not to posed. Love the candid, real feel of the pictures. Between the 2 photographers I felt a bit like a star. They were always there, yet you didn't notice them either. It was perfect! Thank you to both of you for doing such an amazing job!

I had been looking for a LONG time for someplace to do some family portraits, but was bored with the "portrait factories" you find in malls and department stores. Those places have people that can operate a camera, of course. HOWEVER, Breezie is a PHOTOGRAPHER, not just a button-pushing employee. This is her business, her livelihood and most importantly, her passion. It is that passion that she brings to her work and made our family portraits absolutely amazing. She asks you what YOU want to do: not like the places I mentioned above where they tell you what you will do for them. I am 100% satisfied with her work and will be returning to her in the future. If you're in the market for GREAT portraits, Breezie is who you need to contact!

Jason did a wonderful job with our wedding photos! He was unobtrusive, courteous, and professional as he captured the simplicity of the ceremony and took family photos afterwards. He was able to improvise in less than ideal (foggy!) conditions to produce beautiful photos. We would definitely recommend Jason and would hire him again for other photography needs.

Prairie was so great to have at our wedding reception! She was very sweet and hardly noticeable (I know that sounds weird but I’ve had photographers in the past that want to drive the event and take over and cause too much stress). We have her flexibility on timing but she did not abuse it at all. She stuck around until she got all of the best shots and did such a great job. We didn’t get a chance to meet before our event but she did exactly what I was looking for. Just a bunch of fun shots of people having fun and dancing the night away. Thanks Prairie!!

With so many photographers to choose from, we knew quickly that Sarah was the right choice for our wedding day. She came highly recommended from a family friend. We had talked with several photographers but Sarah really stood out to us. She has a great personality and if you meet with Sarah you'll quickly understand what we're talkin about. We "clicked" with Sarah, so my husband and I booked her right away. We did not get that same vibe with the other photographers we spoke with. Our ceremony was outside in June. It was a very hot day, and I was ready to give up on photos for the day because I was so hot. Sarah kept us going and motivated us to push through it. She was so professional and never let the heat bother her. I'm really grateful she kept us going because we ended up with some amazing photos. She is so easy to work with and had some great ideas for us. Everything went so smooth. Sarah was very responsive to my questions, and trust me, I had a lot of questions! We are so happy our family friend recommended Sarah. We have some amazing photos to look back on!! If you are considering photographers for your wedding day, Sarah Baldwin photography should definitely be considered. You will not be disappointed...oh, and I'm super, super picky and have a tough time making decisions. This decision was so easy, and a no-brainer!!

Bonnie is a talented photographer and a wonderful person! We have had the privilege of having Bonnie capture some very important moments for us- from our wedding to maternity pictures to family portraits- and we can't say enough about how much we love the images Bonnie has created with us! Bonnie is very flexible and versatile; we have done studio sessions, a shoot in a park, wedding photos (ceremony, portraits, and reception), and even family photos at our home. Bonnie is great with our daughter, too! She has great vision, a wonderful personality, and her pricing is competitive and affordable. I can't say enough about how much we LOVE working with Bonnie!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
