In contacting Top Notch, they were quick to contact me back; they were on the other side of town at a job but said a time that they could come over and give a quote, after seeing the deck. That same day I had a quote in my hand, I agreed to their price and they said they could start the next day. And they showed up! (which, if you have had ANY experience with handymen, roofers, etc....they do not always show up!) They showed up ON TIME, worked hard, and said that they could finish up the next day, and they did. This was a wonderful Mother's Day present that was finished on Mother's Day by a couple of really good businessmen. I would recommend Top Notch!

I cannot convey just how amazing Terry is! Not only did he know what he's doing but he is one of the hardest working contractors we've hired. My fiance and I couldn't be happier with our decision to go with him... Especially since he saved us hours of work without causing us to go over our budget. I am convinced that Terry is not human but rather a wallpaper removal and trim painting machine! Thanks Terry for all you've done helping to make our new house a home :-)

Luke came to level my kitchen cabinets in preparation for granite countertop. He also added a bookcase to my island. When he got the countertop off, three of the cabinets were destroyed. He gave me the choice to order new or repair the existing cabinets. I didn't want to wait for new ones so Luke fixed what I had. Not only did he save me a ton of money by fixing the cabinets I had, he saved the time it would take to order in new cabinets. And......what a superior carpenter he is! He approached the job with intelligence, actually formulating a plan to fix and level the cabinets that were a mess, rather than jumping in and chasing his tail. The work was completed on time and the craftsmanship is superb. Everything he did is precise, looks great, and is strong as an ox. The job was also completely within the estimate he gave me for both time and money, which was a shocker considering all the extra work and planning. I don't think you could ever go wrong if you hire him. I very highly recommend Luke.

We had Jacob take down two of our laminate cabinets and use the material to build another cabinet in another location. We had two other carpenters tell us it couldn't be done or wouldn't recommend it, but Jacob took it as a challenge and figured out how to do it. He did a great job, on time, and the cabinet looks great. We would definitely recommend Jacob Johnson.

We had Steve install a powder room in our basement in June of 2012. Framing, dry wall, door, tile floor, vanity, toilet, electrical, ceiling, exhaust fan, heater. From our first meeting, through the entire project, to completion, our experience could not have been better. Of the contractor's we had look at the job Steve was the only one who listened to what we wanted. He made suggestions and gave us options to think about but he listened and provided us with a bid for a project that was what we wanted. Steve was outstanding to work with, he communicated exactly what, when, why and how he was completing the work. He was on schedule, on budget, and extremely easy to work with. His work ethic, quality, and pride in his work shows in the finished project. He used a plumber, electrician a carpenter assistant, who are just as excellent as Steve. They have the same work ethic and pride that Steve has, communicate like Steve and are a pleasure to work with. Our finished project is excellent and exactly what we wanted. The entire process was no hassle. Steve handled all permits and details. He said it would be painless and it was. We have used Steve for another small project, had him inspect a home our daughter was buying and have recommended him highly to our friends. He is now bidding on some work at our daughter's new home. We believe that Steve is the best. Honest, friendly, does what he says he will do, when he says it will be done, with excellent quality. It is a treat to work with someone who is as good as Steve. It would not be possible for me give Steve a high enough recommendation. Work with Steve and you will not be sorry.

For the last few weeks I was wondering how would I accomplish my basement framing work as I have quite a limited space and tons of plans basically move my laundry room from upstairs to basement, fireplace framework and they are other things as well, as I put my request on THUMTACK, Travis responded to my request, he has a wealth of knowledge how it needs to be done in correct ways, suggested me how to use the space effectively and also I have made some changes along the way as well as last minute change from pocket door to barn door, he was kind to accept all request I made, which shows very flexible. Overall, he is a 5/5 knowledgable carpenter and most importantly he is not super expensive to hire, he goes with hourly basis. I do plan to hire him again.

When I was searching for a Carpenter, I found gold. He is a honest, hard-working guy who takes pride in his work. He has remodeled 2 of my bathrooms, repaired my deck and has replaced 4 of my doors. He is very professional and definitely knows his profession. I have other projects coming up as well. If anyone is looking for a true professional who is punctual, takes price in his work and honest-Dave is the guy! I would highly recommend him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
