Tai , I never wear make- up, so when my son was getting married I knew I would have to try out several makeup artists. I wanted to make sure that I could find one who could help me feel comfortable all day and look great in these memorable pictures. I tried out several and Tai made me feel like a friend from our first meeting. We talk while she did the test like old friends. After my make-up was finished, I went out and ran some errands. I felt glamorous. I had told her my daughter also wanted her makeup done for the wedding but she was unable to come to the test. Tai was gracious and handled it in stride. I didn’t feel rushed the day of my son’s wedding and felt quite pampered. My daughter and I were stunning. I will use Tai in the future and I would HIGHLY recommend her.

Delia was great! She was so warm and friendly and listened to my overall concerns. She left me looking like a million bucks without having to spend that much. I was pleasantly surprised because she was much more affordable than other makeup artists. Delia definitely knows what she's doing and I would hire her again, I got many compliments on my makeup, which lasted all through the night. The only not so positive thing I have to comment is she did run a little late due to another appointment, but she was still very professional, and let me know, rather than keep me waiting for her, which was much appreciated.

Michelle from Hairs 2 The Bride is a friendly and professional hairstylist and makeup artist who was a joy to work with on my wedding day. I had a double ceremony wedding that lasted from 7 am until 11 pm. It required two makeup applications on myself, as well as two different hairstyles. She also applied makeup and styled hair for my two bridesmaids. Michelle was very flexible with our hectic and confusing schedule. On the day of our wedding, we had asked Michelle to show up at multiple locations. She was even able to accommodate last minute additions to services for my mom and my older sister. I would highly recommend Michelle and am happy I placed my trust in her on one of the most important days of my life.

Kate is AMAZING!!! Not only is she a super talented makeup artist, she's also a great listener. She was able to create the look I was describing and made sure I liked how everything was coming together multiple times. Kate definitely made me look my best for my wedding and my bridesmaids looked gorgeous, too. The makeup photographed beautifully. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Lisa did my makeup as a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding. I felt like she really understood what I wanted and was able to give recommendations. Some makeup artists say "pick you own color" and she was able to say what blush/lipstick/etc. she thought would look best with the eye look. She also did great brows!

Lilly was absolutely fantastic to work with. She did my hair and makeup for my wedding, as well as hair and makeup for several of my bridesmaids. Everything looked perfect and held up well. She was also very responsive to feedback. I had some changes to my makeup look after my trial and the final product ended up perfect. My hair also held up incredibly for the entir night. Would absolutely recommend and hire again.

Melanie is an outstanding artist and an exceptional woman all around. She did my makeup for my wedding and I've never in my life felt so beautiful. She made me feel absolutely amazing. My makeup was absolutely flawless, It felt so light and my eyes looked outstanding! Her contouring is out of this world, my pretty much non existent cheek bones never looked so great! I'm just so happy! I had Melanie by my side all day until I walked down the aisle, and I couldn't be more grateful to of had someone so remarkable beside me making sure I looked and felt amazing. I never felt like she was just my makeup artist, I felt like she was another friend beside me. She makes you feel so comfortable! Not once did she not have a smile on her face, she truly loves what she does and it shows through her work and personality. Melanie not only did an exceptional job on my makeup but she also helped me with many other things and she did not need to do that but offered with no hesitation. Such as helping me get shoes on, holding my dress train, helping me up and down during pictures or stairs, helping out my bridal party when they had makeup issues, helping me get my jewelry cleaned and ready, etc. She was truly amazing all around and I will without a doubt be using her many more times in the future and referring her to all my friends and family. She's an incredible woman and I'm honored to have had her do my makeup on my special day! Anyone who has the pleasure of working with her will never be disappointed! Thank you so very much Melanie for making me look so beautiful on my wedding day, I'll forever be grateful for all you have done for me!

Jess was a godsend! I reached out to her a couple weeks before my wedding 10/29/16 after our original makeup artist didn't feel like the "right fit." She was able to squeeze me in for a trial and was super accommodating for our wedding party of 7 people. She was efficient, worked well with each individual's preferences, and made everyone comfortable and at ease- and feel fabulous! She did great work and was at a great price point, I would highly recommend Jess to any bride!

My makeup artist, Nika, arrived right on time and gave me exactly the natural look that I asked for. My face looked terrific in the photos I took that day, and the makeup stayed on until bedtime. I’d definitely recommend her to everyone who is looking for professional makeup artist. From now on, she is my favorite.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
