Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a fence professional when social distancing?

If you do hire a fence installation or repair professional, follow both local government and CDC guidelines. Keep 6 or more feet of distance between you and the workers, do not shake hands and sanitize any surfaces involved. Virtual payments should be used instead of cash or checks. Determine a strategy to protect all parties when you discuss the project with local fence installers near you.

Does adding a fence increase property value?

Fencing may increase the value of your property. However, this depends on what type of fence is installed and the purpose of the fence. For example, a fence may be worth more to a property that needs it to diminish noise coming from a highway. Fences may also be a plus to dog owners who require a backyard fence.

When deciding whether to install a fence in your yard, consult with your realtor or real estate expert. They can help you prioritize home improvement projects that will add value to your home.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The first step to setting up a consultation with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic is sending the pro a message, which you can easily do online. Ask potential pros if you can set up a phone call or video chat to explain what fencing services you need. A video chat is useful because it allows the fence installer to guide you so they can get the necessary information. During the consultation, discuss virtual payments, the timeline of the project and any precautions you’ll both take to ensure safety.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Can I install my own fence?

You can install your own fence. You may choose to do so to save money and personalize it to your taste. However, there are some common pitfalls with fence installation, including a large time investment. Pros have teams to complete the job more quickly.

You’ll also need to check to make sure you’re within regulations, which a pro will account for. Finally, there’s the risk of installing the fence incorrectly and having to pay for an expensive repair down the road.

To ensure your fence is installed correctly, consider hiring one of the best fence installers near you.

Small custom fence that they were able to install on short notice. Very difficult area to work in under the trees and with an uneven terrain. Turned out great. A really beautiful solution.

I utilized Brian’s services to removing and replacing a wooden fence at two properties. They were responsive, professional and reasonable, regarding cost. More so, the quality of the material used for both projects was grade A+. Both of the fences look great and were installed with perfection. I would highly recommend their services and will use them for other projects, as well.

Unfortunately have to only rate 3 stars. He was quick to help me install my fence, did a good job, but never sent me a receipt for the work, despite asking for it multiple times and giving him over a week to do so.

We were lucky enough to connect with Shaun and A Plus Renovations as we made a last-ditch attempt to install a backyard fence this late fall. Although we'll have to wait and get the fence installed in the spring (due to my late start and my struggle to get a city survey conducted before winter came), we're grateful for Shaun's kindness and professionalism. He generously spent time with us discussing different options. Shaun offered his thoughtful and friendly collaboration as he helped us to figure out the best solution for our needs. We look forward to working with Shaun in the spring, and we appreciate all of his excellent service and great energy as he helped educate us and formulate a game plan.

Brian is the real deal. I needed to fence in a portion of my backyard as well as have a double gate installed across my driveway. Brian came out to get an idea of what I wanted and to be able to provide an accurate quote. He stuck to his quote and timeline. He showed up when he said he was going to and completed the job in half a day. The fence turned out better than I expected. Probably my favorite part about Brian though, was that despite my job being a small one for him, he was still genuinely appreciative of the business. Something that I have NOT seen from contractors I’ve used on other projects.

They are fabulous quickly came to my house with their professional tools and expertise. I would have been happy with one of those big box store installation of fence panels. This is way, way better. A1 renovations was recommended to me by a co-worker. He came out and did the quote within a week of calling. His pricing was very competitive to 3 other quotes we received. He even took care of contacting Diggers Hotline, which was very nice! Due to weather our original install date was postponed by a week, however we received a message late Saturday night asking if he could come tomorrow. We gladly accepted! He came Sunday and did markings in the yard and then Monday they installed my whole fence by 6pm (4 days before they were planning to come back and install). I was able to let my dogs out the same night in their very first yard. They did a wonderful job and conscientious of noise disturbances. Highly recommend!

Interesting how everyone's experiences seem to vary so widely with this business. I got the definite feeling when I had a fence installed 2 years ago that my project got the "C Team" because I live in a not-wealthy neighborhood. As I paid the same price as the people in the wealthy suburbs, you'd think I should get the same quality of work, but no. My fence is splitting, warping, pieces have fallen out, and my attempts to get someone out to repair the work have been getting stalled for over two months now. (I asked in June, and have been getting stalled into September because they're always "busy," "out of town," "will be there next week," etc. -- next week somehow never seems to come.) Earlier attempts made a year ago went unanswered entirely. My experience has been extremely frustrating and not at all satisfactory. I hate to leave bad reviews, but when it comes to the point where I'm going to have to hire someone else to come in and fix the shoddy workmanship (and the people who know woodworking and have seen my fence have not been impressed and have pointed out numerous mistakes/shortcuts), well, I believe that others who may have a similar experience (most likely people who also don't live in high-dollar zip codes) deserve to be warned off before they make a similar mistake.

DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!!!!Also known as "MIDWEST MOW AND SNOW " Manuel met with me right away, cause I wanted a fence installed. At first our communication was daily, and Manuel always texted back. Manuel said the type of fence I wanted was custom and it would be $8300 upfront, I said okay, wrote a check, but after sleeping on it, I changed my mind. So Manuel met up with me, we went to my bank and I gave him $7000 in cash, sitting in my banks parking lot, I asked him for a contract or for something just stating that I had given him this money, he said ok, but NEVER did do either. I've called Manuel repeatedly and Manuel just sends me to voice-mail, which isn't set up. What goes around comes around. Manuel just stole my money and thinks just because I don't have anything on paper, nothing will be done. I do have cameras around my home, I'm going to see what I can do legally. I hate being taken advantage of
