Working with Hugo was an extremely pleasant and stress-free experience. For years, in front of my house, I have had huge patches of damaged grass and because of the shade, nothing would grow. Hugo was very knowledgeable and explained to me exactly what was needed to be done and what would work best in my situation. Because of him, my lawn looks awesome! His rates are outstanding and are very reasonable. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking to get new sod or seeking any landscaping needs. His friendly and professional demeanor makes working with him a pleasure!

My husband and I have teak patio furniture that needed to be refinished. Knowing we would never get around to it, I decided to hire a professional. That's when we found Weston Rayfield. Oh my! What a fabulous job he did -- quickly and for a reasonable price. I have to say tho, even better than all that was when we had the privilege of meeting Weston. He is not only talented and creative, but SO interesting! It was an honor and privilege to spend time with him. After looking at his website, we knew we will be going to Naples soon to see his art in person. Oh, I bought one of his handmade books -- Awesome! Check out Weston's website.... you won't be disappointed! www.americancelebrations.com, www.RepurposedPunk.com -Rita & Jeff

Sharp's service is excellent. They have done both spring and fall cleanups for me; grew grass in places on my property that I would never have thought it could grow, and provided a new and lovely landscape for the yard. I would highly recommend turning to Sharp's for any of your landscaping needs.

Nelson's Landscaping has been taking care of my lawn & snow removal needs for over 8 years. In that time they have transpired my lawn into a beautiful yard. Prior to working with Nelson's my lawn was a mess. Now I can say my yard is probably the best looking one on the block. As for snow removal, they are always on top of the storm and my sidewalks & driveway cleared by the time I arrive home from work. I would highly recommend Nelson's for all your landscaping and snow removal needs.

We bought a new construction home and needed to have the yard done. The "yard" looked like a jungle before Ultimate Landscaping came to the rescue. Tim was great to work with, giving good information and working with us to determine exactly what we wanted for our new lawn. Ultimate Landscaping was awesome to work with, very professional, efficient, and took the time to answer any questions we had; even after they were done. We are already making plans to have them back next spring to work on our landscaping projects. We highly recommend Ultimate Landscaping!

I contacted Matt of MGB Landscaping & Grading through Thumbtack. I am an Electrical Contractor and I was installing a new and upgraded electrical service to a farm. I needed to have Matt give me a price to trench from the new service location to two other areas on the farm that also needed new power. After agreeing to Matts terms Matt and his crew showed up on time and got right to work. immediately we discovered that this was going to be more difficult than we thought. Every foot of trench we had to stop and dig out huge rocks. Since we had over 100' more to go we all new this was going to be a long day. Everyone on Matts team worked hard and got the trench dug to the required depth. I also hired Matt and his crew to trench another job for me about thirty days later. This was a much larger job but with better soil conditions. I would definitely recommend M.G.B. Landscaping and Grading!

We contacted Sherry because we needed some landscape design help & ideas for some various small planting areas around our property. Sherry was professional and responsive and best of all, she gave us some GREAT ideas and even drew a color plan for one of the larger areas. We have not yet planted the "plan", but we love the ideas. What a help!

Working with Craig and his crew was pleasurable and the finished landscaping was beautiful. Work was completed timely despite very hot and humid weather. Very friendly and approachable. If the work cost more than the original quote, Craig was willing to eat the cost for the extra materials. The only negative...there were some days were garbage was left laying around the work site and I felt it necessary to clean it up.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
