Our experience with Leo Wolve was excellent. Leo himself and his crew did a wonderful job on my new porch and roof. His work was done with professionalism and the quality of work was great. He wanted to make sure that we were happy through the whole project, and kept us informed each step of the way. I would recommend him for any and all home repairs.

Jason is a very meticulous worker, and makes sure that the project is completed correctly. We had a moderate to large amout of renovation to the house. Including replacing windows, doors, enclosing a porch, new siding, new front dect and small cover porch to the deck. Our project was extende a short bit due to some complications with the construction. Jason corrected the issues with the older home to make sure that the renovation looked great, and was done correctly. I would recomend his work.

We are remodeling an old farmhouse and trying to stay true to style and era of house. First hired AJS to build a pantry off our new kitchen. It turned out beautiful. Far exceeded our expectations. Adam consulted with us throughout the project, helped keep us on track design wise and was meticulous with all the details. So, we asked him to stay on and build a mud porch. It is even better than the pantry. Way to nice to use as a mud porch so my poor husband still has nowhere to drop off his tools and muddy shoes. Now Adam is on his 3rd project with us. In an upstairs bedroom he repaired water-damaged plaster and stress cracks, laid a lovely tile hearth, installed a mantel, built a closet and added crown moulding. Everything is so lovely. You meet with Adam for the initial consultation. We were concerned at first that he would sell us the job and then send other folks to do the work. That's not how he works. Occasionally he brings in helpers depending on what he plans to do that day, but he is personally on the job every day. You get his knowledge and expertise throughout your entire project. Adam is dependable, skilled and cares about the quality of his work. He told us when we first met with him that "he is not happy until the homeowner is happy". He has lived up to that promise every day.

Josh and his crew did an excellent job building the retaining wall on our driveway, as well as, the small deck addition to our rear deck. It was quite a large undertaking and we appreciated his open communication when issues came up, and his solutions to work within our budget. He completed the jobs on time, and kept a clean job site while the work was underway

Patrick just finished a basement project for me. Originally I was fearful that I would need to have my basement stairs completely rebuilt but Patrick was able to reinforce, put in a new step where one was missing and install hardrail. This saved me considerable money and I am very pleased with the work he did. And with the savings I have another project for him! He is very personable, professional and very good at working with you on suggestions as to how a project should be completed without pushing his ideas and ignoring what you want done.

My name is Scott Riley and I'm from Morgantown. I've had two exceptional experiences with John and ATW Construction. He bailed me out of a situation I was in (June 2016) where I had a vent that had blown off the side of my house (it was high off the ground) and I needed someone very quickly and when I called John, he got there and took care of it for me ASAP. He didn't know me from Adam and yet, he knew I needed help getting that vent fixed so my attic didn't get damaged. My second experience was him and his crew putting a new architectural shingled roof onto my house (November 2016). He showed up the day he said he would, worked daylight to dark to get my roof completed before the weather turned bad. He's an honest, stand-up guy, who knows what he's doing. He's out to build relationships and help people. It's not just about the money with him like it is with everybody else these days. These two experiences were unique situations where I needed help quickly and he was there full throttle to help me and for that I am grateful. He came in each night to let us know he was leaving and that he'd see us in the morning. My wife and daughters enjoyed chatting with him as well. I can't say one negative thing about either job he did for me and I can't say enough GREAT things about him and his work. I encourage anyone to call me or email me and I will speak with you directly on the phone to discuss his professionalism and work ethic and quality in greater detail. Scott Riley Morgantown, WV

Michael and his crew repaired a wall that had water damage from a leaking window. They did a really nice job on the drywall and matching the paint. They also sealed the window properly to prevent it from happening again. They also roof coated the mobile home and pressure washed the home porches and deck. They did the work in a prompt time schedule, cleaned up after themselves and did it all for a fair price. Michael has a determination to get the job done right and customer satisfaction seem to be a high priority. I will definitely use them again for future projects. thanks for the great job! WP

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
