I originally hired them to trim a tree in the front yard. I was so amazing pleased with their pricing, responsiveness, and ability to cater to my needs that I asked them to look at my back yard for an additional estimate. They are now also completing additional work for my yard as well! They also have given me suggestions of who to contact for my next home renovation. As a new home owner, it has been a relief to find a contractor that is willing to work with me on what I want in a timely fashion that is cost effective and that I can trust.

Hired for tree removal and trimming. Tom was very attentive to detail and considerate. He came back to complete job as it too early in the season to trim Oak tree. His price provided serious savings over the other estimates we received.

Within 24 hours provided very reasonable quote and was available for service to do driveway and house steps snow removal. Have used services twice now and does a very thorough job - always looks great. Was proactive identifying and purchasing the correct salt to use so that surfaces were not damaged or discolored. Would definitely recommend.

The upper part of backyard had been neglected about 10 years. a maple cut then had brown into 5 trees making too much shade and a danger for electric wires. Eric worked with a good young arborist on the weekend for no extra charge and a very reasonable price. They took precautions to protect a young plant close by and worked efficiently. On Monday he came back with his crew and cleaned the whole backyard and howled the trees to the smallest debris. They even did a thorough leaves cleanup. I was amazed to see how well and fast they worked. Eric was so pleasant, listened, communicated so well that I hired them to clean our basement.

The work crew was able to bring down a very large tree with exposure of limbs over the house. Bill and Dave were able to minimize the situation. I highly recommend them for tree removal.

I hired Brian to cut down a 70 ft pine tree beside my house. He came out with a coworker. They were very efficient and worked quickly. They explained everything they were doing and were very friendly. I was very impressed by them. If I ever need another tree cut down, I will call them. I recommend Murphy's Affordable Tree Service.

Jake cuts my grass and does snow removal for me. He is extremely professional and very prompt. It is great to have someone so reliable. Also, he applied mulch and edged my flower beds this past Spring. The edging was the best I've ever seen. I'm very pleased with his work ethic.

Stan was hired to clean out my gutters and remove a garbage disposal but while here I "picked his brain" on a few other issues in my house. He was more than willing to look at a few other things for me and ended up reconnecting my furnace pipe and replacing a leaky faucet and also explaining a few things about my furnace as I had some concerns with it. I would hire Stan again, he was easy going and a hard worker and I would recommend him to anyone. Nice guy too! Thanks Stan, Happy Holidays and thanks for all you did!

I got a great estimate from Bill for gutter cleaning and he came out the next day. He also inspected my gutters with no extra cost. Not only did he clean up the debris from the gutters but he also cleaned the leaves off my back patio. He went above and beyond. I would love to have him come back for other projects I need done. Highly recommend him! -Mike S. Avalon PA.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

    • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
    • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
