How does your service stand out?

My true passion in life is music! For me, there is no greater joy than sharing the gift of music with others. I have been teaching, performing, and composing professionally for over twenty five years. I was classically trained in piano and voice as child, entered the world of musical theatre as a teen, and later studied jazz and popular music in New Orleans from 1995-2002. I recently received a BA at CU for Music, Psychology, and Women's Studies. I specialize in ambient to upbeat live entertainment (solo, duo, trio, quartet,...), music lessons for all ages, custom compositions, soundtracks, jingles, lyric writing, setting lyrics to music, professional recording services-voice/piano/keyboard, and producing/consulting on music projects. Life is good and music makes everything better! *I offer special rates for seniors, students, military, teachers, non-profits, off season or mid week events, as well as package deals for multiple services. Please inquire for more information.* Here's some more information about the services I offer, feel free to scroll down to the section applicable to your needs. Thank you! Please visit my website for more information and feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks! Offbeat Magazine describes Aural Elixir's unique sound as "... Joni Mitchell’s sly and perceptive confessional meets Fiona Apple’s confrontational doomed romantic, with little hints of Tori Amos’ gonzo earth mother and Carole King’s practical warmth." Aural Elixir is an eclectic musical experience created by Jesse Maclaine and the rich sonic tapestry of New Orleans. Pulling from a diverse catalog of distinctive originals, popular covers and obscure classic songs from the 60's to the present, Aural Elixir delights dancers and music lovers of all ages. While Jesse Maclaine's style is clearly influenced by classical training and jazz sensibilities, she has created a unique sound that is elegant, upbeat, quirky, clever and enchanting. Often compared to Tori Amos & Joni Mitchell, Aural Elixir delivers versatile, soulful music that is both accessible and defies categorization. *We are always happy to customize our song selections based on your preferences!* Music Lessons: I provide instruction in voice, piano, music theory, improvisation & composition/songwriting. Our studies can lean toward classical, musical theater, jazz, pop, rock, soul, blues, folk, country, funk, and/or world music. I have a broad range of experience in many types of music and we can study anything that you find interesting. Lessons can be intensive or just for fun, depending upon your time commitment and goals. Some students only focus on one aspect and others prefer to study a combo. I live in Longmont and usually do lessons from my house. If you prefer I come to your house, that can work although we would need to discuss logistics. For those of you who prefer remote lessons, I offer music lessons online via Skype and Face Time. Singers and musicians are essentially athletes and need proper training to be able to deliver an excellent performance every time. Regardless of the style of music, proper technique will help you sing safely and to the best of your ability. Every voice is different and I use multiple mental and physical techniques to help students optimize their singing abilities. With over 30 years studying vocal techniques and performance plus 20 years as a professional musician and recording artist, I share a wealth of knowledge, passion for music, technical skills, and life hacks with my music students. In any style of singing, each person must find their unique balance of science, physicality and psychology. I believe that music is for everyone and I am happy to work with all ages and skill levels. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule your first lesson. Thanks! "There is enough self-criticism going on already. What do you enjoy about the work you do?

What don't I enjoy about the work I do? Music is the best! I was born into a musical family and have been told I was singing before I was speaking. My Mother and Grandmother were professional singers, my Great Grandmother was the church pianist, my Great Grandfather was a professional clarinet & saxophone player - touring America with various bands - he even played in the original Grand Ol' Opry, and my Scottish Grandparents were professional dancers. I chose a career in music because I love music but also to honor my ancestors and carry on their musical legacy. I've always loved music, every style has something interesting for the open minded listener. Performing, composing, and teaching music are my very favorite things in this world. Although, cats are a very close second, and dogs are pretty cool too. Like companion animals, music soothes, uplifts, entertains, inspires, and makes a vital contribution to our lives. I truly believe music makes everything better.

    Singing made less intimidating
I started taking lessons with Jesse a few weeks ago and I am very satisfied with her expertise on singing. She is very compassionate, accommodating, and even really funny at times. She also takes very detailed notes for me to take home and keep progressing on my own time. I hope to continue taking lessons with her for some time to come!

Need a song? Hire this woman!!
I commissioned a song to surprise my husband with at our wedding. I had written the lyrics years before but had no musical ability. She did an outstanding job of capturing the emotion and tune I wanted and her piano work was delicate and beautiful. She was also very reasonably priced.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Listening is key. Everyone has a unique relationship with music and their own individual goals. I customize each lesson, performance, or composition to my client's particular needs and goals while paying close attention to their preferences and concerns. Specifically, in regard to lessons, I aim to grow the scope of lessons as the student's knowledge and abilities expand.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My Grandmother and Mother were both professional singers so I began music lessons before I was in preschool. In addition to school choirs and music classes, I have studied voice with many different classically trained, professional vocalists and teachers both in America and in Scotland, including renowned soprano Patricia Bates, choir director/tenor Ken Taylor, singer/composer/pianist Dr. Arfsten, conductor/soprano Dr. Hannah Wunsch, and many more. In high school, I won numerous awards for choir and theater performances in regional and state competitions, successfully auditioned to be a soprano in the prestigious All State Choir four years in a row, and was even chosen as part of a select few to perform at Disney World for their 1990 Christmas Concert. Thanks to my mother's insistence, I begrudgingly started taking classical piano lessons in 1986 with musical prodigy & Juliard graduate, Marlene Woodward and continued to study piano pedagogy with her until 1992. I studied music, theater, and dance at FSU until 1995 when I moved to New Orleans to deeply engage in jazz studies and the New Orleans music scene. My first professional vocal performance was in 1991, and in 1995 I began working full time as a professional singer, pianist, composer, and recording artist. In 1999, I began self producing the first of 6 Aural Elixir CDs. Then in 2002, I moved to Colorado for expanded touring options as well as more performing, composing, recording, and teaching opportunities. I returned to school in 2008, first at FRCC and later immersed in the music programs at CU. I am scheduled to graduate in 2017, meanwhile I continue to perform, compose, record, produce, study, and teach music.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
The standard fee for lessons is $45 for 60 minutes or $25 for 30 minutes. Performance and composition fees generally start at $100 an hour per musician, equipment is included in this price. Additional fees may be required for travel expenses, recording expenses, expedited orders, and holidays. Discounts are offered for certain scenarios (non-profits, military, seniors, teachers, vegans/vegetarians, off season or mid-week events, etc.), please inquire for more information.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I always knew my career would be in the entertainment business. I come from a musical family, my paternal ancestors were professional dancers and my maternal ancestors were professional musicians. My mother was a singer, my grandmother was a professional jazz singer & composer, my great grandmother was a church pianist & my great grandfather was a professional saxophone and clarinet player for a number of groups including the Grand Ol' Opry. Musical diversity was encouraged early on by both parents. My Scottish father listened to a variety of classical music, from Bach to Gilbert & Sullivan, while my Floridian Mother preferred listening to Elvis, the Beatles and other popular music of the 60's and 70's. My mother was also an excellent singer & thanks to her tutelage, I began singing about the same time I began speaking, before I was even two years old, and enjoyed my first performance as a soloist for the preschool Christmas concert at age 4. In the 80's I spent most of my time studying classical music, pop music, while also exploring the world of ballet, modern dance, and musical theatre. My intention was to work in the theatre as a singer, dancer & actress. I began attending FSU in 1992 and studied dance, classical music, world music, & French. During my early college years, I was in multiple bands, including an alternative rock funk group with Jim Ankar, Chris Munson, & Guitar Kevin, called Mr. Forebrane. This group recorded some demos in Nashville at RCA studios and was intensely courted by Warner Brothers Records. Although a few deals were offered, nothing seemed artistically interesting or financially fair enough to be worth signing over music rights and joining the mainstream industry. Likely a narrow escape for these young musicians. In 1993, a drunk driver crashed into my car while I was stopped at a red light. This accident ruined my plans of being a professional dancer but led me to a love of jazz and then the music of Thelonious Monk which inspired me to start practicing piano again. With considerable effort, I mostly recovered from the car accident and then moved to New Orleans in 1995 where I started working as a jazz singer, performing in & around the French Quarter while I studied jazz piano. In 1996, I began teaching an after school dance program in the public schools via New Orleans Outreach. In 1997, my mother passed suddenly from a heart attack and stroke, just weeks after the first Aural Elixir concert. Needless to say, this tragic event was absolutely heartbreaking for me & my family. But I continued pressing on toward my dreams of working as a professional musician and dance teacher. Then in 1998, another drunk driver crashed into my car and once again her dreams of dancing professionally were crushed-literally. On the road to recovery but unable to dance professionally ever again, I decided to focus intently on music & delved wholeheartedly into the world of jazz and ultimately began composing, performing, recording, and producing my own multi-genre songs for Aural Elixir.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with, taught, or entertained people from age 3 to 93, all sorts of folks from various backgrounds, genders, religions, ethnicities, etc. I am a very open minded person and I do not discriminate for any reason.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I was recently commissioned by a large non-profit organization in New York City to compose and record a song for their Summer of Peace project. The project really spoke to me and composing the song took only a few hours. I recorded a quick demo version and submitted it to my client for approval. It took a week for their response, which is always nerve wracking, but I was thrilled to hear them say "The song is perfect, we love it!" and that I "really captured the feel and represented the essence they were hoping to achieve." A week later, I submitted the professional recording and they were ecstatic. The song is not yet available for the public and will likely be part of a large campaign to promote peace in 2017. The entire project was completed in two weeks and arrived under budget at only 10 billable hours (estimated 12-15).
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Don't be shy about asking questions. There is no such thing as a stupid or unimportant question. Find someone who is willing and able to truly hear you and work toward your ideal or vision together. Also, as Maya Angelou says, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
What are your goals? What do you hope to achieve? How much time, money, and energy are you willing to invest to achieve your goals? Which details are necessary and which are flexible? Envision an ideal and make a plan of action alone or with a professional to help you achieve that ideal.
