Introduction: I'm a career tutor and classroom instructor with decades of experience. My greatest strengths are staying in touch with a learner's mindset and breaking down even the most challenging subjects in an understandable way. I have had thousands of students and teach subjects including MATH (up to Precalculus), ENGLISH (grammar, composition & literature), SCIENCE (biology, chemistry, geology & psychology), HISTORY (US & World) and more. I also tutor STANDARDIZED TESTS such as the ACT, SAT, SAT II, AP, TOEFL, ISEE, GRE and others. I have also helped many clients with copyediting, resumés, creative & narrative writing, public-speaking, college applications & essays and interview preparation. I pride myself on bringing true professionalism to my work, while still being relatable and making sure my appointments are both enjoyable and productive. I'm a person, not a company, and I believe that makes a big difference for you as the client. You also won't be fighting for my time and focus because I'm an associate professor looking for extra work, or an actor running off to auditions. Tutoring is my career and calling. I'm happy to chat with you and answer any questions you may have about what I do. I find my work fulfilling when I am able to help students understand not only the topic at hand, but also to believe in their own ability. Ultimately, I'm not the one taking the test or turning in the essay, so when I hear about a student's success, I'm glad I could play a role in helping to achieving that goal.

Robert worked with my son, Cole, for 6 years turning him from a C student to an A student in just 2 years. Robert's teaching style centers around finding out how his students best learn and then working with them in their own style. He is a brilliant tutor who cares deeply about his students. Robert also counsels his students on life's lessons. Whether it's dealing with a difficult teacher or struggling with a friendship, Robert helps his students see things more clearly allowing them to be the best they can be. He is a person who has integrity and character and who models for his students how to make thoughtful decisions in their academic and personal lives. Robert Johnson made a hugh difference in my son's life. For this, I am forever thankful.

I regularly studied with Robert throughout four years of high school and still sometimes reach out to him for help in college. Robert’s excellence goes beyond just expertise in a number of academic areas; he is a passionate and dedicated educator. Robert works hard to and is adamant about instilling proper studying habits in his students, habits that empower long-term independence and consistent results. More to the point, Robert is very professional and easy to work with. I am currently studying finance at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and will soon begin a summer internship with Evercore Partners, a leading global investment banking advisory firm. I doubt I would have succeeded academically to the extent that I have and had the opportunity to pursue my professional interests without Robert’s mentorship. We know Robert since Sep-2014. He was highly recommended by the Middle School where our kids attended. After meeting Robert, we decided to hire his services as a private tutor for our older son. The reason being, Robert had a specific plan to prepare our son for the ISEE ("Independent School Entrance Exam"-for Private High Schools) and the HSPT ("HS Placement Test" -for Catholic High Schools). In Sep-2016, we hired Robert again to tutor our younger daughter for the same reasons we hired him before and for the wonderful results our son obtained in his tests. The following are our kids' observations about Robert: "The classes were detailed, productive and extremely helpful. Robert not only teaches many tips and tricks on how to take the tests but most importantly he taught us how to should face these challenges in an emotional and intellectual way. Robert's demeanor was always nice. He has a soothing voice and he made the subject matter very easy to understand because he connected it with every day things that you wouldn't have thought about it before." We are very proud to say that our son was accepted to ALL the HS he applied to (3 Private, 1 Public & 1 Catholic), most of all, he was accepted to his #1 choice of HS. Our daughter was also accepted to ALL the HS she applied to (3 Private & 1 Public), most importantly she was also accepted her #1 choice of HS. Needless to say we are very grateful to Robert for his help and for tutoring to our kids, he is a very nice, patient and kind young man. We highly and gladly recommend Robert.

Robert is the most versatile educator I have ever met. We started in eighth grade working on the ISEE. I don't remember my exact scores but I know they were great and I got into my top choice school. He tutored me in algebra, precal, chemistry, biology. He also taught me more about how to write an English paper than any of my high school teachers. At the end of high school, we did the ACT & I went from a 24 to a 31! He also helped me with my college applications & essays. I think the essay he helped me with turned out truly amazing. During college, we did Skype tutoring. Now that I am graduated, he is helping me with my resume. There is literally nothing this man can't do! I highly recommend Robert!

How did you get started doing this type of work?
I began tutoring my peers in math when I was in the seventh grade. I've since accumulated thousands of hours of experience in dozens of subject areas. I am also an award-winning writer who has worked as a journalist.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I discourage any student or parent from engaging the services of a tutoring corporation or agency. Working with a company who employs multiple tutors means 1) you have have to pay the company as well as the tutor; 2) you won't get the best help, as the most experienced professionals work independently; 3) you may get a tutor with minimal training and experience for the same high price; and 4) you'll be dealing with a company, which is typically less responsive and less attentive than an individual professional. Thumbtack is purportedly geared toward the sole proprietor, but many tutoring agencies who are struggling for clients attempt to poach clients here. Whether you hire me or not, you'll be better served hiring an experienced individual tutor.
