About this pro

I provide violin and viola lessons for all ages. As a teacher, I am highly inspired by the Suzuki method, which I use as a jumping off point in tailoring my instructional style and materials to each individual student.

I like to incorporate games into my lessons in addition to teaching technique, songs, music reading and basic music theory. I teach music not only for its own sake but as a tool to develop problem-solving skills, emotional maturity, perseverance, and self-awareness.

The ages in my studio currently range from three-year-old children to adults in their forties. I started teaching in 2012 and have been teaching in Portland for almost two years.

Great violin teacher for adolescent students
We just met Grace and have only had one session with her, so I'm not sure what we can say at this point other than she seems to be talented and a good teacher. Only after some more sessions would I be able to give a more accurate review.

    Just what my daughter needed
Grace is patient and positive and a great teacher. My daughter has started practicing again! She said tonight "Grace is making violin fun again!"

Grace has done a great job teaching my 12 year old daughter the basics of the violin. She has also developed a love of the instrument in her and inspires her to keep learning.

Grace is an excellent instructor. When my daughter started taking lessons, Grace spent a long time talking with me about my daughter's previous experiences and has worked very hard to make lessons engaging and not stressful for her. I especially appreciate her ability to sense my daughter's moods and the way she tailors the lesson to keep it light on difficult days and challenging on better days.

Grace is an outstanding music teacher. My daughter was so excited to try Violin, and Grace was the perfect teacher for her. Grace was extra patient with my daughter, who is blind in one eye, and went out of her way to make my daughter feel comfortable and empowered her to believe she could play violin. She adjusted her lessons accordingly and found perfect ways to communicate complex music and violin lessons to a 7 year old. I highly recommend Grace to anyone looking to expand their musical talents. She is a very talented musician, super smart and an wonderful teacher.

I've been having violin lessons with Grace for a few months and she is excellent! I'm an experienced guitar player and she has a great ability to pinpoint my strengths and weaknesses in a way that keeps me interested while helping me focus on what needs improvement. She's super friendly and fun to work with as well. Highly recommended!!

My wife and I have seen Grace in multiple Portland venues, with several musical lineups, and styles. Grace is always exceptional. Her passion just shines in any setting.

Grace teaches both me and my 5 year old daughter and she's wonderful with both of us, accommodating my daughter's wiggles and wandering focus as well as my unpredictable travel schedule. We're so grateful to Grace for the joy this little weekly treat brings our family. Highly recommended.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
$25 per half-hour, $45 per hour
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to talk to students (and their parents, if applicable) about their goals and experience. I start new students off with basics such as bow-hold, posture, finger placement and tone production before introducing them to short, melodic pieces.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory with Karen Ritscher and at the University of Idaho. I have twenty years of playing and performing experience.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with adults and kids ranging from two years to middle age, including children with disabilities.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Think ahead about the goals you would like to accomplish musically (i.e. reading music, developing bow technique or playing a favourite song) and let your new instructor know about them so that they can tailor your lessons to meet your needs, or refer you to a teacher who specializes in your musical interests.
