Introduction: A former Ivy League writing professor provides help with writing to high school and college students. Professor Doug Brown has been mentoring Brown students and high school students for many years now. He has great rapport with young people and a knack for helping them discover their passions and thereby become not just better writers but more careful, more mature thinkers. The awards he's won at Brown attest precisely to that. For him, the concern isn't merely getting a student into a good school. He recognizes that people will be in positions of enormous authority and responsibility and therefore, must cultivate character commensurate with it. Having been a former faculty member and director of the writing center for 14 years, Doug was integral to writing at Brown University. Heading up core support programs, teaching and serving on key committees, he has played a vital role in shaping the culture of writing at Brown. He is an inspired teacher and a dedicated educator. Doug earned a B.A. in English from Wesleyan University in 1984 and an M.A. in creative writing from City College in 1995. Over the last 16 years, he has taught a range of writing intensive courses at Rhode Island School of Design and Providence College, as well as in the Nonfiction Writing Program at Brown (2002-2014). As director of writing support programs, he headed up the writing center, the Writing Fellows Program, and Excellence at Brown, a writing-intensive pre-orientation program. He is the 2006 recipient of the Brown Undergraduate Council of Students Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2007 recipient of the Wilson-DeBlois Award for his work with graduate students.
