Introduction: Brad is an engineer, published writer, and experienced educator who has worked with more than two hundred high school students in pursuit of their very best score on the SAT and ACT--with a whole lot of success. In 2006, Brad earned a BS in Civil Engineering under full academic scholarship (in part based on ACT scores) from Wayne State University. He then found his way to Boise, Idaho where he worked as a consultant on transportation and technology issues while pursuing a BA in English from Boise State University. In 2010, he was invited to join the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, a highly selective fellowship program for creative writers, where he earned an MFA in Fiction. Since then, he has continued to publish creative work, tutored full-time in Denver, Colorado, started a technical services company for the solar industry, and helped to develop large scale solar arrays in Western New York. Most recently, Brad served as a go-to tutor for Chariot Learning in Rochester, NY, the premiere test prep company in the region. Now, he’s brought his diverse skill-set, mastery of the SAT and ACT, and personal approach home. I enjoy the one-on-one approach, using my skill-set and experience to help students achieve important goals that will influence their education. I believe that helping students learn to master their test taking experience has positive impacts outside of just the test--I seek to make them better problem-solvers, writers, and readers in the pursuit of the best test scores possible.

We were so pleased with the individual tutoring that Brad gave our son, Tyler. He was so accommodating to Tyler’s busy sports and work schedule, was always on time, and professional. Brad’s positive and patient way quickly helped to establish a good rapport. Brad took the time in the beginning to assess Tyler’s strengths and weaknesses, so that they could make the most of their tutoring time. He knew exactly what to focus on to help Tyler meet his goal. Brad’s expertise regarding the SAT was exceptional. He shared with Tyler the techniques and tips that would make him successful. Tyler went from a 1320 on the PSAT to a 1460 on the SAT due to Brad’s outstanding guidance! It was money well spent! Thanks again! Cathy and Lee S.

I wanted to write in support of Brad Kelly in teaching my son the skills needed to improve his scores on the SAT. My son has a 95+ average in high school, taking predominantly honors and AP courses. His knowledge base and understanding of material for tests is impressive. However, the SAT is not about what you know, but about applying test taking skills that are not routinely used in everyday high school classes or even AP/IB exams. Despite his knowledge base and baseline test taking skills, with a simple 6 week course and his own efforts, he was only able to achieve a 1330 on his first SAT attempt. We then approached a test prep provider where we live, and were connected with Brad Kelly. Brad spent five 2 hour sessions with my son developing the skills necessary and the confidence in those skills for the June 2017 administration of the SAT. On this test his scores increase to a 1470, 780 in Math and 690 in Verbal. I would highly recommend Brad to assist your student in developing the necessary test taking skills to improve their performance on the SAT or ACT, a major factor in entry into the academic school of their choice.

He made the connection with my son that was necessary to help him see the strategies Brad was teaching. He was knowledgeable, punctual, flexible and responded to my son's needs. I will consider him for my other two children.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Price varies by transportation time and subject matter.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I provide a first session guarantee. This means that if we meet for one-on-one tutoring services, and you don't think I can help, then the session is free. The tutoring process itself varies from student to student, based on strengths, weaknesses, goals, and timeframe. But here's the gist: For the first few sessions (3-8 hours), we dive as deep as we need to into a proprietary curriculum that I helped to develop with the good folks of the Chariot Learning Network (chariotlearning.com). Following a satisfactory completion of the SAT and/or ACT curriculum, my students take a series of practice tests (on their own time). Careful review of these practice tests, with an eye toward ongoing score improvement and the co-creation of a student-specific test-taking strategy, comprise the remainder of our sessions--as many or as few as you think you need!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a B.S. in Civil Engineering, a B.A. in English, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Michener Center for Writers, a highly-selective writing program at the University of Texas. I am qualified to teach writing at the college level and, in addition to thousands of hours of tutoring, I have also delivered corporate training as well as a year-long creative writing course for imprisoned individuals in Texas.
