Introduction: I'm a native English speaker, fluent in written and spoken German, with an M.A. in German-English translation and German linguistics. I have over 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience ranging from kindergarten-age to university courses. I currently work as a technical translator in an engineering department, and also have a freelance specialty in translating letters in the old German Kurrent/Sütterlin script. The range of my experience brings unique advantages to tutoring and translation possibilities! I love the variety that tutoring German brings. Having worked with children to establish a base familiarity with the language, to university students requiring German for reading knowledge, to retirees looking to deepen their knowledge of their heritage language -- every situation calls for a different approach and different learning tools. For translation, my academic and professional background give me expertise in literary and well as technical and business translation. My favorite aspect of freelance translation, though, is bringing old family letters and diaries -- which in many cases have been unread and unknown for years, due to the difficulty of reading the script let alone the language -- to light, so that voices can be heard and known across generations.

Jessica did an amazing tutoring with supplying worksheets, taking the time to grade them, and helping with any concerns you had.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Generally $45/hr for tutoring, and 25 cents per word for translation/transliteration -- though each job's quote depends on the task's content and quirks.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a master's degree in Translation/German Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and have held a full-time position in technical translation in a Fortune 50 company engineering department for over 5 years. In addition, I have completed various freelance translation and transliteration projects.
